1. Quick Tips for the Sophisticated Internet of 2015
• Facebook:
1. Think twice before listing your occupation, location or phone number on
Facebook and use as few connected apps as possible.
2. Take care when uploading geo-tagged pictures from smartphones.
3. Don’t upload pictures or items that could undermine your
professional obligations or security clearance. Understand all “family” or
“innocuous” pictures are basically “free intel,” including headshots.
• LinkedIn:
1. Never accept an invitation from an unknown third party.
2. Use care when disclosing specifics about your employer or type of work.
For example, “United States Government” is wiser than “Defense,” etc.
3. Be wary of unsolicited employment offers from overseas.
The Internet has grown, and cyber criminals and counterintelligence agents are very
busy using it to their advantage. Our fellow citizens offer plenty of material; let’s take
the lead and make smart choices. Nonchalance is costly.
