  4. 4. Global Digital Citizenship How do our devices affect others around the globe? Some Questions: ● How do we convince designers to make devices less disposable and more upgradable? ● How do we show respect for the miners who deliver the raw materials for our devices? ● What conditions should the factory workers live in? ● How much do we let media and corporations decide how long it is before we have to replace our devices? ● How much energy does a Google, Bing, or Yahoo search really take? ● What is the carbon footprint of a search? ● How do we ensure that our devices get recycled properly when the time comes?
  5. 5. No Guilt! Our students are generally concerned, caring, capable people and they will be the ones to lead campaigns that show respect within their online communities and out to the world beyond. We need to be aware and make them aware. We need to help them to find ways to take positive actions.
  6. 6. Factors to consider: Design Materials Manufacturing/Shipping Energy Use Reduce/Reuse/Recycle
  7. 7. Design
  8. 8. Upgradable Phones? There are companies working to build modular phones - with parts that swap in and out so you can fix and upgrade your phone and add new features as they emerge. Ex. Fairphone The Fairphone 2 is a smartphone for people who value sustainability. It’s made to last for five years, it's easily repairable, and it's modular. It's body features easily replaceable components. (video 2:00) Phoneblocks is another option Article: It’s hard to buy an ethical smartphone IFixIt - scores repairability

  10. 10. Tantalum - ‘blood’ minerals for our phones? Google to see where else tantalum is mined - you might be surprised. Why don’t we use these sources? If you want a more nuanced report watch the Al-Jazeera video on this topic. Watch a TED talk by Bandi Mbubi

  12. 12. Working Conditions in China An SNL satire about 1st world complaints and Chinese factory working conditions.
  13. 13. Energy Use: What is the ‘Cloud?’
  14. 14. “The Cloud” is concrete and steel. Buildings with thousands of computers linked together. They draw enormous amount of energy, create enormous amounts of heat and need to be kept cool. So how much energy does a Google search use? Your guess???
  15. 15. Google Searches Each search is not a huge amount but wow does it add up!!! Lights a 60 bulb for 17 sec!!! Infographic about Google and energy. How much is a search? How many homes could be heated by Google’s energy use? Google and renewable energy Microsoft’s response Amazon seems to be lagging
  16. 16. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
  17. 17. Who decides when we get a new device? This all a part of the design problem and short term contracts. When the contract expires? When the battery fades because it can't be replaced? When a part is damaged and can't be replaced?
  18. 18. Do you have that box or drawer? What to do, what to do? Phones MP3 players Cameras Gaming devices Computers
  19. 19. Recycling Where does our waste sometimes end up? China and Ghana?

  21. 21. So what?
  22. 22. No guilt - take action Think of one age appropriate lesson or activity that you could do with students in your class. Choose one topic and work with that. Create a brief ‘no-guilt, take action’ response or lesson idea using one of: ● Sutori, Glogster, etc ● Educreations, Lensoo Create, Doceri, or another whiteboard app ● Goanimate, Powtoon, Moovly, etc ● Book Creator, Little Bird Tales, or other book creator ● Infographic - some options Everyone can do something and there are lots of actions that are available to kids of all ages.
