Mehrnush (Nushy) Golriz graduated from Berkeley High School in
Berkeley, CA among the top 5% of her class. At Dartmouth she is
majoring in Hispanic Studies and Geography modified with
Portuguese. Nushy is passionate about language and culture and
participated in both the Argentina Spanish FSP in 2013 and the
Brazil Portuguese LSA+ in 2014. She is also interested in Human
Rights and a term in Santiago, Chile interning at a human rights
organization that dealt with law suits against the Pinochet regime.
At Dartmouth, Nushy is interested in immigration and race
relations in the United States and is the president of MOSAIC (the
multiracial club) on campus. After graduating, she hopes to earn a
Fulbright Scholarship to teach English and create a sustainable
permaculture project in Brazil leading to a graduate degree in international development.
Nushy was funded by the Rockefeller Center for a Winter 2015 internship, with generous
support from the McSpadden Public Affairs Internship Fund.
Executive Summary from Nushy’s final report:
This winter, I served as the border policy Intern at the National Network for Immigrant
and Refugee Rights (NNIRR) in Oakland, CA. The NNIRR is a non-profit national umbrella
organization that serves as a forum to share information and analysis, to educate communities
and the public, and to develop and coordinate plans of action on important immigrant and
refugee issues. During my internship, I was
responsible for updating the organization’s
website on current immigration and refugee
issues as well as conducting research on
corporate interest within immigration policy. I
produced two pieces on corporate interest:
one focused on the immigration industrial
complex and the other explored investment in

border security technology. My internship was extremely informative and allowed me to
conceptualize how immigration policy is formed and the challenges it faces at all levels of
government. Through my internship, I’ve become very interested in immigration and refugee
issues and I hope to pursue a law degree focusing on immigration law in the future.
Through my internship at NNIRR, I realized how pertinent the issues of immigration and
refugee rights are- both in the world as well as in my personal life. Through constantly reading
about the struggles of immigrants and refugees in the United States, I began to realize how
privileged I am to have been born with legal documentation. This internship has taught me that
I would like to continue working with immigrant and refugee rights in the future. While I
enjoyed working with a non-profit policy-oriented organization, in the future I would like to
explore working with both governmental and legal organizations that focus on these issues. I
also hope to pursue a J.D. in immigration law. I would like to thank Mr. Peter McSpadden for
providing me with the opportunity to participate in this internship experience.

Named Internship Profile Summary - Mehrnush Golriz (McSpadden Public Affairs Fund)

  • 1. Mehrnush (Nushy) Golriz graduated from Berkeley High School in Berkeley, CA among the top 5% of her class. At Dartmouth she is majoring in Hispanic Studies and Geography modified with Portuguese. Nushy is passionate about language and culture and participated in both the Argentina Spanish FSP in 2013 and the Brazil Portuguese LSA+ in 2014. She is also interested in Human Rights and a term in Santiago, Chile interning at a human rights organization that dealt with law suits against the Pinochet regime. At Dartmouth, Nushy is interested in immigration and race relations in the United States and is the president of MOSAIC (the multiracial club) on campus. After graduating, she hopes to earn a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English and create a sustainable permaculture project in Brazil leading to a graduate degree in international development. Nushy was funded by the Rockefeller Center for a Winter 2015 internship, with generous support from the McSpadden Public Affairs Internship Fund. Executive Summary from Nushy’s final report: This winter, I served as the border policy Intern at the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (NNIRR) in Oakland, CA. The NNIRR is a non-profit national umbrella organization that serves as a forum to share information and analysis, to educate communities and the public, and to develop and coordinate plans of action on important immigrant and refugee issues. During my internship, I was responsible for updating the organization’s website on current immigration and refugee issues as well as conducting research on corporate interest within immigration policy. I produced two pieces on corporate interest: one focused on the immigration industrial complex and the other explored investment in “I began to realize how privileged I am to have been born with legal documentation.   • 2. border security technology. My internship was extremely informative and allowed me to conceptualize how immigration policy is formed and the challenges it faces at all levels of government. Through my internship, I’ve become very interested in immigration and refugee issues and I hope to pursue a law degree focusing on immigration law in the future. Through my internship at NNIRR, I realized how pertinent the issues of immigration and refugee rights are- both in the world as well as in my personal life. Through constantly reading about the struggles of immigrants and refugees in the United States, I began to realize how privileged I am to have been born with legal documentation. This internship has taught me that I would like to continue working with immigrant and refugee rights in the future. While I enjoyed working with a non-profit policy-oriented organization, in the future I would like to explore working with both governmental and legal organizations that focus on these issues. I also hope to pursue a J.D. in immigration law. I would like to thank Mr. Peter McSpadden for providing me with the opportunity to participate in this internship experience. 2
