Techniques for successful networking
Japanese and other newcomers to the Valley are at a disadvantage, as they have to build their networks almost from scratch. So you’ll need to make extra effort. Pick groups and events that are truly interesting to you. Don’t just go because you “should” 成功の80%は出席することによる-ウディ・アレン Eighty percent of success is showing up – Woody Allen 人と話す Talk to people 知らない人に自分から会話を始める Approach people you don’t know ©2021 Japan Intercultural Consulting www.japanintercultural.com 8

1 Good back and
forth example 1 Prospect: So, what do you do? Me: I prevent pain and suffering in the workplace. Prospect: Huh? Me: Do you know what the most expensive work related injury is? Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. Most employees are out of work for half a year, and it take up to 7 years to fully heal. Carpel Tunnel can cost businesses MILLIONS. That’s where I come in. I sell ergonomic products to prevent Carpel Tunnel and other work fatigue problems. I keep your employees feeling refreshed. Prospect: Does that mean you have something to help with shoulder pain? Me: Yes I do! Do you have a moment? I have a few things I’d like to show you. ©2021 Japan Intercultural Consulting www.japanintercultural.com 20
21.
2 Good back and
forth example 2 Prospect: So, what do you do? Me: I help build PowerPoint muscles. Prospect: Huh? Me: Do you remember about 10 years ago when the space shuttle Columbia was destroyed on re-entry? It turns out the engineers tried to warn NASA about the danger. But the PowerPoint slides they used were a complete mess and no-one understood the danger. That’s what I do. I train people how to make sure their PowerPoint slides aren’t a complete disaster. Prospect: Does that mean you help improve presentation skills? Me: In a way. Do you have a moment to talk further? ? I have a few things I’d like to share with you. ©2021 Japan Intercultural Consulting www.japanintercultural.com 21
