  • So thank you very much for joining this conversation today.  My name is (insert name here).  I cover (insert your role) at Riverbed Technologies.  You know when you look back at the history of Riverbed, what we’ve really been in the business of doing, is transforming the way businesses operate, in an increasingly distributed world.  When you factor distance and latency, it can have an incredibly negative impact on how fast a business can move and react when opportunity strikes or when business just needs to get done.

    We have a solution, that we’re calling Zero Branch IT.  And we think it’s going to bring you completely new levels of freedom around the way you deliver new services to your branch and remote locations, so that they can business done.
  • So Zero Branch IT. First lets just talk about the branch itself. When we say the word BRANCH, it’s a convenient term, but it really represents the many types of locations away from Headquarters, where business truly gets done. A branch is the front-line of a business – maybe it’s thousands of distributed retail outlets. Maybe it’s a number of oil rigs out at sea. Maybe a branch represents manufacturing plants or factory floors. Of course so many of us are familiar with sales or consulting or legal offices. There are so many examples, but most importantly these are the places where revenue streams grow for business, and we do whatever we can to make sure they’re always up and running with the applications and services they need, so that workers are able to do their jobs.
  • And therein lies part of the problem…

    Because if you want to be efficient as a business, you have to optimize the thing that’s creating the maximum growth for your enterprise.

    A recent study from IDC shared that on average, companies are operating 55 remote IT locations for every ONE data center. That’s a lot of THINGS to manage for IT.

    And there has to be a better way to do it….
  • Because when we surveyed a large group of enterprises earlier this year, about their process around both the branch and data center, we learned some very interesting things.

    They told us that often nearly half of the employees of their companies work in branch locations – and yet, few if any are actually skilled IT workers who can support the technology needs of a given location. So this is ultimately increasingly hard to support.

    Next, we heard that it’s not at all uncommon, for half of a company’s data to reside outside of the secure and central data center – in the branch. And so that raises serious concerns about data being at risk and unprotected. So there’s that question around – how can we make sure our company’s data is secure in the world we live in nowadays.

    And lastly, we heard that because of the things I mentioned earlier, the support of branch offices is representing roughly half of the entire IT budget. And so that raises the question – if we’re spending half out budgets on these branch locations, and yet still concerned about the operational efficiency of how we manage them, as well as the level of security that’s in place to protect your company’s intellectual property, is there not a better way to go about this…

Ideally, the goal is for you to really open up the opportunity to listen and learn, and come away with a true understanding of what makes your customer tick, what makes him really concerned when it comes to managing branch IT and keeping his branch workers productive, and his business growing.

(A hyper-converged solution for the edge, that integrates storage delivery, server virtualization and industry leading WAN Optimization into one small appliance that sits at remote sites, but is managed completely from the data center)

    Riverbed has pioneered a new architectural approach that enables IT to consolidate and manage all edge servers in the data center – along with the backup for that data.
    This storage delivery approach enables storage to be decoupled from compute – so data lives on your data center storage array yet can be locally executed and used at the edge, even in the event of a WAN outage. A server can be booted over the WAN and server a user in Paris, yet have its data safely managed 4000 miles away in a Chicago data center - and the experience is as if it is all local. SteelFusion effectively projects data center storage from the data center to the branch enable global enterprises to achieve complete consolidation of edge applications, servers and storage to the data center.
    User gets uncompromised performance – and IT is able to manage it all within the four walls of the data center.

  • What is SteelFusion? At its heart, it is a box with software on it… Well actually, it’s two boxes – one at the data center – SteelFusion “core” and one at the branch – SteelFusion “Edge”. SteelFusion Edge is available as a standalone solution but <click> is also available with Riverbed’s SteelHead WAN optimization appliance.

    SteelFusion introduces three technologies to solve the problem. First is block-level Pre-fetch: [establish that this cant be done today] by reading the contents of the blocks and applying file-system intelligence, SteelFusion is able to infer what the OS is actually doing, for example, booting up, launching an application, opening a document. It is then able to predict what blocks need to be read, and pre-fetch them before the OS requests them, which is much faster than going about it serially, one-at-a-time.

    Second, SteelFusion provides an authoritative block cache that does a few things to ensure the local experience. It establishes a “warm” edge such that after the first time accessing data center managed data, there’s no need to continuously pull data blocks – users get it readily from SteelFusion Edge. SteelFusion also acknowledges new data writes locally – this is what we call fast cold writes. The SteelFusion system manages the transfer asynchronously back to the data center. This is also part of the magic that enables the branch to continue working during a WAN outage – what we call disconnected operations. Users don’t notice because SteelFusion Edge delivers data and accepts new data even during those periods.

    The third is a technology you’ve all come to know and love—deduplication. In order to streamline data transfers across the WAN, SteelFusion takes advantage of the same de-dupe technology as Riverbed’s market-leading SteelHead products.
  • At-rest data security
    Can be configured to use a 256-bit AES key to encrypt all data written to disk.
    Encryption standards supported include AES-128, AES-192, and AES-256.*
    The key is maintained on-disk in a file called the secure vault which itself is encrypted by AES-256 and a 16-byte cipher
    The secure vault can be configured to use en embedded Federal Information Process Standard (FIPS) 140-2-validated cryptographic module

    In-flight data security
    SteelFusion Edge appliance also provides data in-flight encryption capabilities.
    Creates an end to end secure SSL v3 or IPSEC channel to protect data in-flight.

    * The U.S. government declared in a 2003 review of the algorithm that any of the three key lengths is sufficient for protection of classified information up to the SECRET level, while TOP SECRET information requires 192- or 256-bit keys.

  • Block Cache:
    SteelFusion Edge acknowledges all iSCSI write operations locally.
    It caches the incoming writes locally on disk and then asynchronously flushes them back to the data center storage array via the SteelFusion Core.
    As blocks are received, written to disk and acknowledged, the written blocks are also journaled in write order to a log.
    Log is used to maintain the block-write order to ensure data consistency in case of WAN outage.
    Prefetch:
    SteelFusion Core performs block-level prefetch from the back end storage array and actively pushes blocks to SteelFusion Edge to keep its cache warm.
    SteelFusion Core crawls the NTFS Master File Table (MFT) to build a two-way map of the file system – blocks to files, and files to blocks.
    By intelligently inspecting iSCSI block access requests from the application/host file system iSCSI initiator, SteelFusion algorithms predict the next logical file system block or a cluster of blocks to prefetch.

    Some interesting scenarios where this can be truly valuable:

    Are you struggling to deploy patches or security updates to remote locations on a regular basis? This removes the hassle and pain of having to physically touch every branch office.
  • Shows that with SteelFusion, data snapshots are continuously streaming to the data center to be protected
  • This shows that if the branch experiences an unplanned outage, users can still immediately VPN in and access data in the data center

    But here, as soon as a new appliance becomes available, data can immediately be projected from data center to the branch – fully recovered and with full performance.

  • Here’s how it works.

    First and foremost, we want to make sure that we can provide complete data security, without sacrificing performance at the branch. This is one of those typical trade-offs that IT architects have been forced to make in a distributed architecture. If you want performance, you have to put infrastructure at the edge close to where the end users are. But that compromises security. With out solution you can bring all of that data back into the secure data center, and Riverbed will do the job to make sure that there is local performance at the edge, and every bit of data is encrypted end to end, from where it’s produced, to where it’s protected in your data center. THAT is something that NOBODY else can deliver.

    User Productivity. There’s lots of different types of applications that are running in our branch offices today. Riverbed is the application performance company. We know how to make applications perform whether they’re traditional on-premises applications or coming from a public or private cloud.

    Business continuity. What does it take to recover from a branch outage today? How much data will be lost? With the solution that we’re talking about you’ll be able to instantly recover in milliseconds or seconds versus hours of days. And data is constantly being protected from the branch to the data center, so very little data will ever be lost.

    And in the area of agility – keeping IT agile the concept here is Riverbed’s ability to extent the security and capabilities of your data center, out to every single location, across the globe, in your distributed enterprise. That’s what we do best. Think about it: Is it easier to manage 100 servers at 100 sites, or 100 servers from 1 site?
