The EBSCOhost CustomLinks feature offers certain advantages over OpenURL linking when used in conjunction with the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) Partner Databases as well as with OCLC's freely available WorldCat Local "quick start" service. The latter is customized and branded locally by Rice University and used as an intermediary to augment the metadata available for linking from EDS to the desired item when not enough metadata is available in the EDS record alone for OpenURL linking to work effectively.

Introduces "Slug" a web crawler (or "Scutter") designed for harvesting semantic web content. Implemented in Java using the Jena API, Slug provides a configurable, modular framework that allows a great degree of flexibility in configuring the retrieval, processing and storage of harvested content. The framework provides an RDF vocabulary for describing crawler configurations and collects metadata concerning crawling activity. Crawler metadata allows for reporting and analysis of crawling progress, as well as more efficient retrieval through the storage of HTTP caching data.

At a time when the data explosion has simply been redefined as “Big”, the hurdles associated with building a subject-specific data repository for chemistry are daunting. Combining a multitude of non-standard data formats for chemicals, related properties, reactions, spectra etc., together with the confusion of licensing and embargoing, and providing for data exchange and integration with services and platforms external to the repository, the challenge is significant. This all at a time when semantic technologies are touted as the fundamental technology to enhance integration and discoverability. Funding agencies are demanding change, especially a change towards access to open data to parallel their expectations around Open Access publishing. The Royal Society of Chemistry has been funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research of the UK to deliver a “chemical database service” for UK scientists. This presentation will provide an overview of the challenges associated with this project and our progress in delivering a chemistry repository capable of handling the complex data types associated with chemistry. The benefits of such a repository in terms of providing data to develop prediction models to further enable scientific discovery will be discussed and the potential impact on the future of scientific publishing will also be examined.

There are several distinct ways to represent data drift in the Linked Open Data world. In this presentation we introduce an approach for tracking data changes that has been used in the context of the OpenCitations Project. Such approach has been inspired by existing works on change tracking mechanisms in documents created through word-processors such as Microsoft Word and OpenOffice Writer.

Web scale Discovery services are becoming the most sought after solution for Libraries to connect its patrons with the relevant information they seek. Many studies show that these services are getting wide acceptance from users as well as Library staff and making revolution in Library Information retrieval arena. Given such broad implications, selecting a new discovery service for libraries is an important undertaking. Library professionals should carefully evaluate options to meet their goal of finding the best potential match for their library. This Paper attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of Library Web Scale Discovery solutions by depicting various facets of Web Scale Discovery, how it differs from federated searching and highlights the important parameters to be considered for taking an informed and confident decision on selecting discovery service.

About the Webinar Link resolvers have become an important element of providing access to full-text electronic content and are now ubiquitous in both the library and publishing community. These systems work well enough a majority of the time. However, they are not entirely problem free, and as a result users may not always obtain access to information which their institutions have licensed for them. The management of the large volumes of linking data necessary to support these services is a problem in scale as well as in detail. Several NISO projects have sought to improve the reliability of these systems, including the Knowledgebases and Related Tools (KBART) and Improving OpenURL through Analytics (IOTA) initiatives. This webinar will highlight these NISO projects and other community initiatives launched to create community-managed knowledge base repositories. Agenda Introduction Todd Carpenter, Executive Director, NISO Building the Global Open Knowledgebase Kristen Wilson, Associate Head of Acquisitions & Discovery / GOKb Editor, North Carolina State University Libraries KBART: A Recommended Practice to Increase Accessibility and Discovery Chad Hutchens, Head, Digital Collections, University of Wyoming Libraries What we learned about OpenURL in NISO’s IOTA Initiative Adam Chandler, Electronic Resources User Experience Librarian, Cornell University

IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional association, has made a long-term commitment to partner with discovery service vendors, libraries and NISO to improve all aspects of library discovery services and workflows, so as to aid better discoverability and ultimately usage of its content. This presentation focuses on how IEEE collaborates with EBSCO, which provides EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), and Stony Brook University, which uses EDS and subscribes to IEEE content, to make the IEEE content more discoverable, visible and accessible in the library's EDS implementations.

Heather Hedden, Senior Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge, presented “The Role of Taxonomy and Ontology in Semantic Layers” at a webinar hosted by Progress Semaphore on April 16, 2024. Taxonomies at their core enable effective tagging and retrieval of content, and combined with ontologies they extend to the management and understanding of related data. There are even greater benefits of taxonomies and ontologies to enhance your enterprise information architecture when applying them to a semantic layer. A survey by DBP-Institute found that enterprises using a semantic layer see their business outcomes improve by four times, while reducing their data and analytics costs. Extending taxonomies to a semantic layer can be a game-changing solution, allowing you to connect information silos, alleviate knowledge gaps, and derive new insights. Hedden, who specializes in taxonomy design and implementation, presented how the value of taxonomies shouldn’t reside in silos but be integrated with ontologies into a semantic layer. Learn about: - The essence and purpose of taxonomies and ontologies in information and knowledge management; - Advantages of semantic layers leveraging organizational taxonomies; and - Components and approaches to creating a semantic layer, including the integration of taxonomies and ontologies
