In Praise Of The F Word By Mary Shelly
"In Praise of the 'F' word" is a short story written by Mary Shelly which demonstrates the deficiencies
within the educational system. No student should be allowed to move onto the following grade just
because a teacher cannot tolerate him or her in the classroom. Shelly illustrates this within the story
as she tells the reader that she is in agreeance with the teacher's policy of failing her students.
Because of this the reader will realize that students should put in their maximum effort in the
classroom instead of diminishing their studies. Once students grow up and move onto their
responsibilities in the future, the ones who took school seriously will have an easier time handling
those things rather than the ones who slacked off in school. Students should not be afraid to flunk
classes because it matures them and prepares them for their future, and gives them a sense of
accomplishment when they pass the class. To begin, using the "F" word to motivate students
illustrates matures them as adults and prepares them to expect anything in the future. Fred Phillips
from the University of Saskatchewan stated, "when planning classes, accounting faculty make
choices about pedagogies, content, and instructional design that affect the difficulty of students'
initial learning experiences. These choices can make initial learning experiences easier and more
comfortable for students, or they can make initial learning experiences more difficult and
challenging" (1). How a student

In the article "In Praise of the F word", Mary Sherry states students need to take responsibility in
their education. Personally, as a student taking responsibility for your education means completing
my assignments, studying and acing all my tests. The ability to succeed in life is a valuable gift
and many people take advantage of their chance. I can relate to this because in high school I was very
lazy and never took school seriously until end of junior year. Once I put motivation into my classes,
I got back on track. Thinking about my future motivates me to do better. Instead of just skimming
through the lesson, I apply my knowledge into it. Honestly, the last thing on my mind is to live
with a crappy job. If I have a loss of motivation

In Praise Of The F Word By Mary Sherry
In the passage "In praise of the F Word", the author makes some really great points about education
and failing. Throughout the passage, Mary Sherry criticizes the way teachers teach. She says
students aren't really learning or earning their diplomas that are being given to them at the end of
their senior year. The author states that a way to get students to actually learn and change the
meaning of their certificates that they're being handed is to put the fear of failure in them. Having
students engage in one–on–one conferences with a teacher, could be a way to create awareness that
the student is failing. Whether the teacher breaks down the overall grade into different sections
(quiz, tests, assessments, etc) or just shows them the final course grade. With the student being
shown that they have the possibility of failing they'll have more ambition to fix what needs to be
corrected. Throughout the passage the thought approaches, what is a way to get students to put
learning as a top priority and actually have students engage in lessons that'll have students creating
knowledgeable ideas from the material being taught. The way the author answers this question is in
a classroom create a teaching style that'll be compatible with the students and grab their attention. Is
a student going to learn if they can't pay focus on the material being thrown at them? A tactic Mary
Sherry uses in the reading is fear. Mary states scaring a student with the fact that , going to fail the

While failing students may work for a portion of them, that does not mean it will works for all. In
the article "In Praise of The F Word", Michelle Sherry, a teacher and published author references the
positives of failing students. One flaw she made was ignoring the negatives of failing students. In
this upcoming quote, Sherry argues that failing students motivates and helps students rise above
their classroom behaviors. She also argues that the only way to get students to work hard is to throw
"the trump card of failure" at them. Sherry "most kids don't put school first on their list unless they
perceive something is at stake." In simpler terms, she's assuming that students are not at their best

A few students will either leave high school happy or upset for many reasons. According in the
story of "In Praise of the F Word," by Mary Sherry, she believe that it's "healthy fear of failure,"
which mean students can fail. Also, she believes that if a student is misbehaving in class, to
threatened them by saying I will "flunk" you in the class. By threatening the students, she strongly
believes that they will straight up and they will do their work. In other words, students care about
more in the grades then the actually learning in class.
When students flunk in school, it looks imperfect on the school and many more of other reasons.
Now the students have to retake the classes, because they were either not doing the work or just
didn't care about school. It starts to show how some students prefer to drop out of school for drugs
and etc. If they feel like they're not smart for whatever reason, their excuses will be "oh not doing
the work, because I don't understand." When they can ask for help or get a tutor that will be willing
work out the problems for them.
Therefore, students that choose to flunk in school is a bad thing. The reason why, because they
find so many excuses to fail when they can't try it out first before saying "it's too hard." It won't
hurt them to ask for help instead of trying to run away from the issues. It all begins with
participating in class and study until you get it memorize. Sometimes it is difficult to get the hang of

Failure to Success
" In praise of the F word" by Mary Sherry, the author has her point that flunking students is a way
that can help students do better in school. Flunking students can be helpful in getting them
motivated and lead to success in their education. Students who don't want to put in effort because
they are lazy, a troublemaker, or good student that gets just passed along to next grade deserve to
fail. Is it not going to be easy for students to be successful in their education. The students need to try
hard to get to their goals. The students have to pass through failure to have the motivation to do
better in school. If more students go through the teacher's threats of failing, the students will want to

Another good key is to look out for the feedback which will help a lot in school that will get
students to be better. Receiving feedback will help students by getting them to understand the
assignment or getting to know the mistakes made. Lastly, work ethic is a good example for a
student to have as a number one priority for school. Students should not procrastinate because
waiting until the last minute to work on homework is a bad idea for not putting in the effort and not
taking the time to do it.
Next, When students fail in school, teachers don't bother to care nor to help because it was the
student's decision to fail, although having parents jump in to the students problems; no matter what
they will always support because the parents want the best out of him/her student. Also, parents
look out for their child in the education challenges that gets to them. For example, Karther, Diane
E. Lowden, Frances Y states,"Despite their own low school achievement, many parents value
education, believing it to be a pathway to success for their children"(41). Parents are good reason
why student tend to succeed in school after getting in the way of struggling by failing a class. One
good reason that students will tend to focus in school and get a good passing grade is getting told
by parents at home to do homework if not value electronics gets taken away. Teachers have limited

The title of the article is In Praise Of The F Word, which I think it's referring to the word failure
,failure of our education system to teach the children basic skills and letting them graduate without
having the capabilities of a graduate should have . The "F" word does not increase the effectiveness
of the article because these type of informative article usually require the writer to tell the facts to the
readers, although the word failure is stated many times in the article but not everyone has the same
intellectual level to understand the phases. The writer of the article "In Praise Of The F Word" is
Mary Sherry. Mary Sherry is the mother of three and grandmother of four resides in Burnsville,
Minnesota. She has written numerous articles on general subjects and on spirituality in America,
Newsweek, St. Anthony Messenger, Newsday, Catholic Digest, The Wall Street Journal and
Liguorian. She teaches English grammar at night to adult students who dropped out of high school or
who graduated without learning how to read and write well enough to keep a job. Her own son,
when he was a senior in high school, nearly flunked English until his teacher threatened him with
failure and he turned his semester around.
Through the author's perspective, she is very disappointed with the education system because
