LO: To develop an
understanding of what
Christians believe and what
their holy book is.
Christians
People who follow Christianity are called
Christians.
Although there are many different types
of Christians, they all believe in Jesus
Christ.
The Bible
• The Christian holy book is called The
Bible.
• It is made up of 2 sections, The Old
Testament and the New Testament.
In your books write
what you think the
difference is
between the Old and
the New Testament.
Some facts...........
• The bible is the biggest selling book
in the WORLD. 2,500,000,000 were
made and sold between 1815 and
1975.
• The Gutenberg Bible was sold in 1978
at auction for £1,265,000.
• It was the first book to be printed
by a machine.
• The bible is made up of 66 smaller
books.
• It took approx 1500 years to write.
• The bible is made up of many types
of books including law, history, songs,
poetry, prophecy, letters, Gospels,
prayers and many more.
• Many people believe that the Bible
tells the truth about Jesus and
contains the teachings about God and
how life should be lived.
• Christians believe that moral
decisions (right and wrong) should be
based on the teachings of Jesus in
the New Testament and the Ten
Commandments in the Old
Testament.
Jesus
• Write down 5 adjectives
to describe Jesus
• Write down 5 facts that
you know about Jesus
The Ten Commandments
1. You shall have no other Gods but me.
2. You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it
or worship it.
3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
4. You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy.
5. Respect your father and mother.
6. You must not kill.
7. You must not commit adultery.
8. You must not steal.
9. You must not give false evidence against your neighbour.
10.You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You
shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything
that belongs to your neighbour.
Write 10 rules on your
stone tablet, which you
think may help people to
get on better with others,
either in your school or in
the world today.
Symbols
• The main symbol of Christianity is the cross or
crucifix, it reminds Christians that Jesus died for
them by being hung on the cross.
• Christians have lots of symbols. Candles represent
the light that Jesus brings to the world.
• Water represents cleanliness, washing away sins,
and new beginnings.
Holy Places
• Christians have many special places. These are
called shrines. These places are special for many
reasons.
• Christians worship in churches.
• Special places for Christians include Fatima, in
Portugal, Bethlehem, and Rome in Italy where the
Pope lives.
• My favourite Christian holy place is…
Lourdes
• Lourdes is in France, in the Pyrenees mountains.
• Mary, Jesus’ mother visited a poor, sick girl called
Bernadette, many years ago. Mary asked
Bernadette to build a church and ask people to
come in procession.
• Many sick people visit each year and some are
even healed from their illness. When this happens
it is said to be a miracle.
• There are processions every day
Festivals
• Christians celebrate many festivals and holy days
each year. The most exciting are Christmas and
Easter.
• Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus and
Easter celebrates the time when he rose form
the dead.
The Bible
• Split into two parts - old and new
testaments
• Old = before Jesus, the story of the
Jews
• New= Jesus’ life
• The Bible is a moral guide
• Contains the 4 Gospels (Matthew
Mark, Luke & John)
Fill in the gaps:
• The bible is divided into 2 parts, the old and
the new…………….
The Old Testament tells of a time before
………and it follows the story of the Jews.
Contained within the old testament there
are many stories which contain ……….. which
are meant to give a people guidance in how
God wants them to live.
• The New Testament is divided into ……..
Gospels which tell the life story of Jesus,
they again guide people how to live a moral
live. The importance of the bible to
Christians is that it tells them about Jesus’
life and it also acts as a …….. for them to live
a moral life.
Homework
Perceptions (= how people think of) of the Bible
Ask 2 people at home the following questions
and record their answers.
A. Would you read the Bible if you had a problem?
Yes/No
B. Do you think reading the bible can help you live a
better life? Yes/No
C. Name a story you can remember from the bible?
D. Which age group do you think is most likely to read
the Bible?
E. If you have a problem where would you look to get
advice?
