& Willis, 2011). Walker and Avant's method "provides a systematic approach to analyze
relatively new concepts" (Bruggemann et al., 2012, p. 124), and is comprised of three different
processes: concept analysis, concept synthesis, and concept derivation (McEwin & Willis,
2011, p. 54). The concept analysis process is broken down into eight different steps that will allow
defined terms to be presented in a common language (McEwin & Willis, 2011, pg. 54, para. 2).
Additionally, the concept synthesis process is utilized when concepts need to be developed further
and can be broken down into three subcategories: qualitative synthesis, quantitative synthesis, and

Peer–Reviewed Concept Analysis Article Woman
–centered care in childbirth is the process in which
a woman can make choices, be involved in, and has control over her care and relationship with her
physician or midwife (Maputle & Donavon, 2013). Woman–centered care is a philosophy of care
which gives priority to the wishes and needs of the female patient during labor, to improve the
women's ability to make informed choices about many aspects of their care and birthing process.

The concept should be clear and distinct, unambiguously defined and well differentiated from other
concepts, and should be applicable to the world and appropriate in context. Concept analysis is
applied for the refinement and definition of concepts originating from nursing practice, nursing
research and nursing theory (Maputle & Donavon, 2013), which helps to differentiate between
similar and dissimilar concepts. Walker and Avant assert that concept analysis and development are
fundamental processes required by nurse researchers who are attempting to measure the
metaphysical phenomena of nursing, or in this study the midwifery practice. The framework
suggested by Walker and Avant was used for the analysis described in this research. The method of
research included:
Selection of the concept Specification of the aims of analysis Identification of uses, characteristics of
the concept Determination and definition of attributes Development of model cases which
exemplify the analysis Identification of antecedents and consequences Definition of empirical
referents (McEwen & Willis, 2011 p.54)

Determining family structure and dynamics as well as defining the family is a complex process.
Personally, I come from a very traditional family. Much like the assumptions made by the students in

Living with extended family members has also been publicized lately in relation to the poor
economy. Young adults who typically lived on their own after college are moving back in with
their parents, older adults on fixed incomes that do not go as far as they once did are living with
their children. This is a definite shift in the traditional family. Having graduated and moved out on
my own prior to the economic decline I have learned to live with less, but having known that was
coming I would have considered living at home longer. My siblings have or are planning on moving
back in with our parents after college graduation to get ahead money–wise. This is a stressor on not
only the individuals as a lack of feelings of freedom, but also an adaptation by the family as a
whole that was unplanned years ago. It is my belief that recognizing any family structure or
definition is important, as the traditional version may be skewed in so many ways, without
knowing or recognizing the "family" that people we run across may come from. We can also learn
from other family definitions to build upon our own themes, rules, and beliefs. Adding stigma and
prejudice toward families different from our own not only alienate the members, but can add
unnecessary stress upon that family system. Stress in any family system can be seen as either an
