project being setup in the Cashel Mall.
Businesses moving into the City Mall precinct include a mix of old tenants, big brands and pre-quake central city stalwarts.
Kathmandu will be the main anchor of the northern precinct, with fashion shops – including Trelise Cooper and Maher
Shoes – clustered around the Crafted Coffee cafe.
Project architect Anton Tritt, of the Buchan Group, said shipping containers had been chosen for the precinct because they
were strong. They could also be reused at a new site if landowners decided to put up more permanent buildings.
Because of an agreement with the landowners, new tenants were given leases of only six months, with the entire shopping
precinct scheduled to be dismantled after Easter next year.
However, some organisers expressed hope that, if successful, the containers could remain for years.

BOXPARK Shoreditch is a pop-up Mall based in the heart of East London
opened in 2011 for the next four years. BOXPARK is constructed of
stripped, and refitted shipping containers, creating unique, low cost, low risk
pop-up stores. Filled with a mix of fashion and lifestyle brands, galleries,
cafés and resaurants – BOXPARK places local and global brands side-by-
side, creating a unique shopping and dining destination.
BOXPARK is not some run-of-the-mall shopping centre. It’s a living, fertile
community of brands packed with talent, innovation and attitude that puts
creativity and fashion back where they belong: on the street.

Dekalb Market is a new community destination in Downtown Brooklyn.
Dekalb Market, is housed in a collection of salvaged shipping
containers, that bring together Brooklyn’s creative entrepreneurs in a
community setting that include an incubator farm, events and
performance venue, and a collection of eateries and work-sell spaces.

The Edutainer is an ‘instant classroom’ made from a 12 meter (40 foot)
shipping container, ideal for pre-school classrooms, taking up to 25
children.
The Edutainer is an innovative and practical way to address the problem
of scarce, inferior early childhood education in South Africa. The
conversion process (which you can read more about in the article
below), ensures that the Edutainer is fitted with windows and doors,
insulated, electrified, furnished, and then delivered to a community and
installed on prepared concrete foundations.
The Edutainer is plentifully stocked with carefully selected books,
teaching aids, and educational toys. Edutainers are usually used as pre-
schools for five to six year olds in impoverished areas where there are
no existing preschool facilities or those that are available are
substandard at best, to provide and safe and productive learning
environment

Faodien Ben - Bicycle

Faodien is the owner of Imfundo Cycle
shop in Lavender Hill. This business
began as a "bicycle empowerment
center" (or "BEC"), established by
Bicycle Empowerment Network
(BEN). A BEC is a "bike shop in a
box"", comprising a donated 40'
shipping container and the 450 or
so used bikes--and spare parts and
tools--which come within it.
BECs provide a valuable service in
remote areas of Namibia and South
Africa. They bring employment and
capital to these depressed areas.
They also give back to the
communities in many ways
