Agile. Secure. Fast. In the past, applying free software development style to web applications blocked continuous development. Many open source projects joined the #flist (#FAIL list). Since web sites are centralized pieces of software running continuously, there is a need for secure access to the live code. This forces a division of managing a running website, merging software changes from developers, and keeping development on the software progressing healthily. To complicate matters, a site may have active base of librarians and artists uploading and editing new materials. Aiki Framework is an AGPL licensed LAMP-based new web framework that stores all the controllers and output templates in a database. It also allows for various levels of access to an instance so that configurable levels of trust are applied empowering development to continue from the web (or traditional ways). The block that plagues countless free software projects is removed, so development continues providing harmony and joining together functions of development on an open source web project.

Since this conference is more technical, we will dig deeper into the LAMP-powered StatusNet software, the updated OpenMicroBlogging standard that allows distributed federated microblogging, and will explore the basics of free network services through the eyes of the Franklin Street Declaration.

Shanzhai products, often derided as knock-off fake products, literally means "mountain village" in Chinese. These products are sold by the cargo ship, but massively to the large populace internal to China. "Shanzhai" refers to the older times in China where thieves and pirates would stockpile illegal goods high up in the mountains. Others simply refer to Shanzhai products accessibility to everyone. With Shanzhai, even the poor people who live on a mountain can have the expensive famous brands. This presentation investigates the Shanzhai technology culture in China, analyzes its positive and negative aspects, and announces a new legal approach to build off the best parts of Shanzhai technology. This approach uses a mixture of Creative Commons licensing for hardware plans, Free Software licensing for software used to run the hardware, and open patents for the novel technological innovations. The trend towards web-based applications creates a question about the future of creativity on the web. With web projects like Aviary, Scribd and Slideshare, more people than ever have access to making and sharing creations. How do our beloved desktop applications such as Inkscape, Gimp, Scribus, Krita, and Blender fit into this new world wide web world order (NWWWWO)? How do our projects stay relevant in contemporary times as more users and technology move to use network services? How may we learn from the rapid development of web-based projects that don’t rely upon the ultra-long development cycles, arduous community learning curves and reliance upon cranky ingrained software development methodologies? First, this presentation surveys the landscape of creative network services such as Aviary, DeviantArt, Scribd, and Docstoc. Then it investigates the the Free and Open Source Software (FLOSS) approach to on-line network services, Autonomo.us Free Network Services most commonly licensed with the GNU Affero GPL 3.0 software license. The Open Clip Art Library and Open Font Library communities are used as examples of pre-Free Network Services websites which can fit into the Autonomo.us Free Network Services definition. This presentation is a call to arms for all FLOSS Graphics communities to think about how their applications integrate with the web, what pieces are missing, and how we can all collaborate on making a unlocked web-based graphics future.

Who provides your e-mail service? Where do you post your photos? Do you download music still? When all of our data is spread amongst multiple devices between multiple locations – home, office, and mobile – then it becomes clear why on-line network services rule supreme over managing personal computers in providing synchronized capable services that don't require us to update software or hack-in fixes. The modern person's primary concern in using a computer is to get things done and stay connected with others globally in the most effective ways possible. The shift to on-line network services, often partnered with cloud computing, requires us all to question whose cloud our data is in, what can the cloud owner do with it, and what rights are we forking over to be on cloud nine. For example, if I use Google's Gmail service, what can Google do with my e-mail data? This last summer 2008 a great example emerged when the mega-popular micro-blogging service Twitter failed regularly resulting in pop-culture fall-out with sightings of the fail whale. Open Source hero Evan Prodromou of WikiTravel-fame stepped up and realized the shortcomings of Twitter's locked approach and created Identi.ca, an Open Software Service based micro-blogging web service that both worked solidly, replicated common functionality from similar services, and allowed for others to hack on the project, or set-up their own connected site if so desired. This presentation looks at the landscape of services like Identi.ca which are adapting the Free and Open Source Software approach to on-line network services publicly championed from the Autonomo.us blog. This is timely because the personal computing shift from the desktop to the web is a hot topic with the Gnome Online Desktop and Gnome 3.0 initiatives. However, with long development cycles, arduous community learning curves and reliance upon cranky software languages, the simple accessible nature of web application development is thriving. This presentation instigates increased development on web services that protect user autonomy by commonly using the GNU Affero GPL 3.0 software license, creating free services to replace popular non-free alternatives, and by replacing centralized services with open distributed ones when possible. This presentation emphasizes the role of the Gnome Desktop to be a lean mean on-line desktop machine and what role Chinese businesses can play in accelerating this next dynamic wave of the FLOSS movement.

Many websites in China are broken. They don’t validate against the current World Wide Web Consortium recommended standards, support language encoding badly, and don’t use widely accepted Creative Commons licenses for user generated content. A traditional approach in the online English-based communities is to develop a campaign and collect signatures from those who support the action. This type of petition would then be provided to the website operators in order to show them how much people care about a problem. This approach is total FAIL in china. Accelerating more businesses and developers to promote web standards in China requires a project and strategy that is rooted in guanxi and indirect marketing. By making web standards sexy like Apple products and using some type of public reputation system like Creative Commons licensing approach is the path to success. Site that fit a set of criteria are encouraged to apply a well-designed button to their website show they are part of the elite VIP culture of web standards. This presentation explains webstandards.cn, who is involved and provides an invitation for all to make their web site standards compliant.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine.
