This I wish to change project Poverty By: Reed Taylor
Poverty Map
Glass Ceiling The glass ceiling is an institutional barrier that prevents women and minorities from advancing to the upper levels of management in companies. Women and Minorities often have trouble getting past the middle-level management positions. The chances of them getting past these barriers are increased in fields that are stereotypically not viewed as a masculine field.
More about the Glass Ceiling The glass ceiling can have a negative effect on the U.S. economy because if more women and minorities don’t get into higher management positions, The others that are trying to get into those positions may give up. If they give up, We lose their innovation and drive that they have to be better than the other people that are competing for the prized high level management positions.
Poverty by Race 2009
Graph Analysis The graph shows the percentages of poverty in 2009 by race. This information clearly shows that poverty is more common in minorities. One possible reason for this is the glass ceiling. If these workers are kept out of management positions, they are at the lower end of the pay scale. This most likely means minimum wage which would keep them below the poverty line. Poverty greatly limits people’s access to education and other things that are almost pre-requisites in the corporate world. By not having access to these the odds are stacked against them in terms of advancing to management positions.
Poverty by Family Type
Graph Analysis The graph shows a significantly higher poverty rate among female headed households. This could be a result of the glass ceiling. If they are caught in lower level positions they won’t make enough to be considered above the poverty line. It also shows that non-metro areas have higher poverty rates. This could be caused by a lower availability of resources in non-metro areas. In metro areas there are often more programs offered to help the needy.
Corporate Statistics Only 3% of corporate boards have an African-American on their board of directors. Only 2% are Hispanic. In professional specialties, women earned 75% of what their male counterparts earned. African Americans hold less than 1% of senior corporate positions. These statistics are proof of the bias against ethnic minorities and women.
Keys to Avoiding Poverty Education beyond High School Avoid having kids until you are financially stable. Don’t break the Law Surround yourself with good influences Marry before you have children Work full time if possible If you do all these things your chances of being in poverty are almost zero. These things are especially important for minorities because statistics show that there is a bias towards minorities in the work place.
