Las bibliotecas han cumplido la función de colectar, conservar y socializar el conocimiento desde hace 5,000 años, afirmó el director de la biblioteca pública de Nueva York al anunciar su jubilación el pasado 18 de noviembre (Cohen, 2009). Sin embargo, en los últimos tres quinquenios, los cambios habidos son tan radicales que rivalizan con el “impacto Gutemberg”. Paul Leclerc cuenta que en 1993, cuando asumió el cargo de director, la biblioteca ni siquiera tenía una página Web que la representara fuera de sus límites territoriales. Hoy en día, --sostiene Leclerc--, la biblioteca pública de Nueva York atiende 18 millones de visitas territoriales y 26 millones de consultas mediante Internet. Dicha biblioteca cuyo acervo asciende a 50 millones de artículos y el catálogo más grande del mundo cuenta también con una biblioteca virtual en Segunda Vida.
Liatris started in SL in Oct. 2006 and began volunteering at the original reference desk on Info Island in May 2007. You can alwayscount on her to be at the Reference Desk every week. She has done 2hours a week at the desk just about every week since then.Liatris has also volunteered with the SLA and ACRL in Second Lifegroups. Alliance Virtual Library Display at 2009 SL Copenhagen ConferenceAlliance Virtual Library is setting up a display at the Second Life site promoting the December 7-18 U.N. Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen.
