The Covenants

Tuesday 26 April 2011
“A covenant is an
         unchangeable, divinely
         imposed legal agreement
         between God and man that
         stipulates the conditions of
         their relationship”
                                  Wayne Grudem,
                        Systematic Theology p.515

         Agreement - 2 parties
         Divinely imposed - no negotiation
         Unchangeable - can be superseded
         or replaced but not changed

God’s plan is revealed in the Bible
           and centres around promises or
covenants he has made. There are
at least 8 of them all of which give a
           slightly different rendering of God’s
plan and purpose in the world. Most
           come in divine declaration.
           Scholars suggest three theological
           covenants relating to the salvation
           of man.
           Theologians suggest God’s central
purpose is to save the elect - and
history is the outworking of this plan
           of salvation

Tuesday 26 April 2011
A. The theological covenants

   1. Covenant of works with Adam - if
Adam obeyed God he would be secure
in his spiritual state and would have
   eternal life.
This is inferred [deduce or conclude
   from evidence and reasoning rather
   than from explicit statements] from
Gen 2:17 and is rejected by many on
the basis of lack of evidence.
It is not called a covenant in the Bible

Tuesday 26 April 2011
2. A covenant of redemption, between God the
Father and the Son in regard to salvation of man in
     eternity past.
The Son undertook to provide the redemption for
salvation and the Father agreed to accept his sacrifice.
This seems clear in scripture revealing an eternal plan
of salvation from God - Eph 1:4, 11
even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the
world, that we should be holy and blameless before
him...In him we have obtained an inheritance, having
been predestined according to the purpose of him who
works all things according to the counsel of his will...
This is still only inferred by the above scriptures.
Tuesday 26 April 2011
3. To approach the eternal
     purpose of God in salvation
     as a covenant of grace
Christ is the mediator of the
     covenant on behalf of those
who put their trust in him who
have to put their faith in him
for the conditions to be met.
     This emphasises the gracious
     character of God in salvation.
     Once again this is only
     inferred.

Tuesday 26 April 2011
There is a problem in making salvation the
primary focal point of human history.
What of God’s plan for Israel, the church,
  the nations?
A better idea is that God is concerned with
revealing his glory through all that he
does. Chafer states that the 8 covenants
reveal the essential purposes of God in
  human history and include salvation.
  Covenant theologians emphasise the 3
ideas we have just dealt with.
  People emphasising biblical covenants are
  called dispensationalists because these
covenants reveal the differing ages of
  human history revealed in the
  dispensations
Tuesday 26 April 2011
B. The Biblical Covenants

These are either conditional (God acts in response
to action by the one addressed - God guarantees his
part as long as man fulfills his) or unconditional -
may include human contingencies [a future event or
circumstance that is possible but cannot be
predicted with certainty] but declares a certain
purpose of God which will ultimately be fulfilled
Only Edenic and Mosaic covenants are conditional.

Tuesday 26 April 2011
1. Edenic Covenant
     1.Edenic covenant made by
     God with man Gen 1:26-32,
     2:16-17 - conditional,
     life,death, blessing curse were
     dependent upon Adam’s
     faithfulness. Adam had
     responsibilities. Adam and Eve
     failed and the penalty ensued.
     Immediate spiritual death,
     later physical death. Their
     actions plunged all humanity
     into the same pattern.

Tuesday 26 April 2011
2. Adamic Covenant
 2. Adamic covenant made with man
after the fall Gen 3:16-19 -
 unconditional from God declaring
mans lot as the result of sin.
 No appeal, no human responsibility.
Important features of human life from
now on: satan is cursed, promise of a
 redeemer (Gen 3:15), woman’s place
 with conception, suffering, pain, and
under mans headship, man will have a
life of work, sorrow and death.
To a large extent man continues under
 this Adamic covenant.
This is the dispensation of conscience.
Tuesday 26 April 2011
3. Noahic Covenant

    3. The Noahic covenant (Noah and his sons) - Gen
9:1-18 - unconditional, introduced a new principle of
human government as a curb of sin,
God would never again destroy the earth with water.
Men were responsible to replenish the earth and govern
themselves. Capital punishment was instituted. Animals
began to fear mankind as man could eat them, and
seasons came upon the earth. Shems line will bring the
    Messiah.
This is the dispensation of human governance.
Tuesday 26 April 2011
4. Abrahamic Covenant
     4. The Abrahamic covenant -
     Gen 12:1-4, 13:14-17, 15:1-7,
     17:1-8 - 3 lines of profound
     promise are given,
     a. Abraham would have
     prosperity, blessing and a great
     name
     b. A great nation, Israel, would
     emerge, including the 12 tribes
     who were promised the land
     c. Through Abraham the entire
     world would be blessed -
     fulfilled through Israel
     (esp.prophets) revealing God,
     then through Jesus Christ.
Tuesday 26 April 2011
Unconditional - if Israel
     chose to live in this
     they got blessed, if
     not, they went into
     exile etc.
Relies on God not man -
     it will/did happen -
     including birth, death
     and resurrection of
     Jesus Christ.

5. Mosaic Covenant
 5. The Mosaic Covenant - through
Moses to Israel - Ex 20:1-31:18 - Moses
given law to govern God’s relation to
 Israel - 600+ commandments relating
 to;
 a. Express will of God - the
 commandments Ex 20:1-26
 b. Judgements for social and civic life -
 Ex 21:1-24:11
 c. Ordinances of God - Ex 24:12-31:18
Conditional - if Israel obeyed God
would bless and vice versa, temporary
terminating at the cross, a few
elements of grace but essentially a
 covenant of works.
Tuesday 26 April 2011
6. Palestinian Covenant
  6. The Palestinian covenant - Dt
31:1-10, Israel will possess the land
  promised to them - unconditional
  and secure yet with conditional
  elements for each generation
Gen 12:7 etc. - yet time in Egypt,
  wilderness, exile etc.
There is a final promise of
restoration and life in the land for
  Israel - Ezek 39:25-29, Amos9:14-15
Israel will be fully returned after
the return of Jesus Christ - so
  ultimately this is unconditional,
  God will fulfill it.

Tuesday 26 April 2011
7. Davidic Covenant
 7. The Davidic covenant - 2
 Sam 7:14-16, 1 Chron 17:3-15 -
 unconditional promise of an
 unending royal line and
 kingdom forever - God will
 break in and discipline David’s
sons if he wants to but the
 covenant cannot be broken.
 Guarantees Israel an
 everlasting throne, king and
 kingdom. The line is
 completed in Jesus Christ.

Tuesday 26 April 2011
7. Davidic Covenant
 7. The Davidic covenant - 2
 Sam 7:14-16,theChron 17:3-15 -
 This assures 1 millennial rule
 of Christ with David
 unconditional promise of an
 (resurrected) reigning under
 unending royal line and
kingdom forever - of the house
Christ as a prince God will
of Israel - Jer 23:5-6, Ezek
 break in and discipline David’s
 34:23-24, 37:24
sons if he wants to but the
 covenant cannot beis an
 The David kingdom broken.
 Guarantees Israelan earthly
 earthly one with an
 everlasting throne, kingGod’s
throne, it is the key to and
kingdom. The line is yet to
 prophetic programme
 be fulfilled
 completed in Jesus Christ.

Tuesday 26 April 2011
8. New Covenant
   8. The new covenant prophesied in the OT
will have its primary fulfillment in the
   millennial kingdom - Jer 31:31-33 - a new
covenant with the house of Israel, Judah.
33-34 But this is the covenant that I will make
with the house of Israel after those days,
declares the LORD: I will put my law within
them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I
will be their God, and they shall be my
people. And no longer shall each one teach his
neighbor and each his brother, saying, 'Know
the LORD,' for they shall all know me, from
the least of them to the greatest, declares
the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and
I will remember their sin no more."
Tuesday 26 April 2011
Chafer states, “This passage
    anticipates the circumstances
    of the millennial kingdom
where Christ is to be reigning,
all will know the facts about
Jesus Christ. It will not be
    necessary to evangelize...for
all will know the facts about
Jesus Christ. It will be a
    period in which God will
    forgive Israel’s sin and bless
    them abundantly”
    Obviously this is not being
    fulfilled in this day.

Tuesday 26 April 2011
The NT relates the church to the
new covenant - so some believe the
 church fulfills the promise to
 Israel, Israel and the church
become the same with all promises
 now spiritualised.
 Chafer says another option is,
 “Others who recognise Israel’s
 future restoration and the
 millennial kingdom consider the NT
references to be an application of
the general truths of the future
covenant with Israel to the church
 or to distinguish two covenants
(one for Israel and one through
 Jesus Christ providing grace now
 for the church).”
Tuesday 26 April 2011
The new covenant is all based on the ground of the
blood of Jesus, and that god promises he will
        a. Save, preserve and present in heaven all who
have believed in Jesus Christ - believing is the
ground for admission (not part of the covenant) - so
the covenant is made with the saved, not unsaved -
God then promises to keep them and present them
        in glory.
This is all unconditional - mans actions might bring
discipline but God will keep his covenant promise.
        (Jn 5:24, 6:37)
It does involve absolute control by God - but Chafer
states so did Noah and Abraham’s covenants

Tuesday 26 April 2011
So it is a manifestation of
 God’s sovereignty and power
yet there is some exercise of
 human will - God both
 controls (Jn 6:44, Phil 2:13)
 and appeals to (Jn 5:40,
 7:17, Rom 12:1, 1Jn 1:9), the
 will of man.
God is sovereign - yet there
 is latitude in his allowing
men their own will - this
means there is no fatalism or
 dethroning of God.

Tuesday 26 April 2011
b. The future salvation of Israel is promised in the
        new covenant - Isa 27:9, Ezek 37:23, Rom 11:26-27
Accomplished on the ground of the shed blood of
Jesus Christ - through which a nation or an individual
can be saved by God. Matt 13:44 - Israel is the
treasure hid in the field (world)
        To summarise covenants;
God is sovereign in unconditional covenants - and
whatever he has undertaken will happen.
Man has failed and the outworking of the covenants
        is conditional

Chafer, Bible Doctrines: Covenants

  • 2. “A covenant is an unchangeable, divinely imposed legal agreement between God and man that stipulates the conditions of their relationship” Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology p.515 Agreement - 2 parties Divinely imposed - no negotiation Unchangeable - can be superseded or replaced but not changed Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 4. God’s plan is revealed in the Bible and centres around promises or covenants he has made. There are at least 8 of them all of which give a slightly different rendering of God’s plan and purpose in the world. Most come in divine declaration. Scholars suggest three theological covenants relating to the salvation of man. Theologians suggest God’s central purpose is to save the elect - and history is the outworking of this plan of salvation Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 5. A. The theological covenants 1. Covenant of works with Adam - if Adam obeyed God he would be secure in his spiritual state and would have eternal life. This is inferred [deduce or conclude from evidence and reasoning rather than from explicit statements] from Gen 2:17 and is rejected by many on the basis of lack of evidence. It is not called a covenant in the Bible Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 6. 2. A covenant of redemption, between God the Father and the Son in regard to salvation of man in eternity past. The Son undertook to provide the redemption for salvation and the Father agreed to accept his sacrifice. This seems clear in scripture revealing an eternal plan of salvation from God - Eph 1:4, 11 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him...In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will... This is still only inferred by the above scriptures. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 7. 3. To approach the eternal purpose of God in salvation as a covenant of grace Christ is the mediator of the covenant on behalf of those who put their trust in him who have to put their faith in him for the conditions to be met. This emphasises the gracious character of God in salvation. Once again this is only inferred. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 8. There is a problem in making salvation the primary focal point of human history. What of God’s plan for Israel, the church, the nations? A better idea is that God is concerned with revealing his glory through all that he does. Chafer states that the 8 covenants reveal the essential purposes of God in human history and include salvation. Covenant theologians emphasise the 3 ideas we have just dealt with. People emphasising biblical covenants are called dispensationalists because these covenants reveal the differing ages of human history revealed in the dispensations Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 9. B. The Biblical Covenants These are either conditional (God acts in response to action by the one addressed - God guarantees his part as long as man fulfills his) or unconditional - may include human contingencies [a future event or circumstance that is possible but cannot be predicted with certainty] but declares a certain purpose of God which will ultimately be fulfilled Only Edenic and Mosaic covenants are conditional. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 10. 1. Edenic Covenant 1.Edenic covenant made by God with man Gen 1:26-32, 2:16-17 - conditional, life, death, blessing curse were dependent upon Adam’s faithfulness. Adam had responsibilities. Adam and Eve failed and the penalty ensued. Immediate spiritual death, later physical death. Their actions plunged all humanity into the same pattern. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 11. 2. Adamic Covenant 2. Adamic covenant made with man after the fall Gen 3:16-19 - unconditional from God declaring mans lot as the result of sin. No appeal, no human responsibility. Important features of human life from now on: satan is cursed, promise of a redeemer (Gen 3:15), woman’s place with conception, suffering, pain, and under mans headship, man will have a life of work, sorrow and death. To a large extent man continues under this Adamic covenant. This is the dispensation of conscience. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 12. 3. Noahic Covenant 3. The Noahic covenant (Noah and his sons) - Gen 9:1-18 - unconditional, introduced a new principle of human government as a curb of sin, God would never again destroy the earth with water. Men were responsible to replenish the earth and govern themselves. Capital punishment was instituted. Animals began to fear mankind as man could eat them, and seasons came upon the earth. Shems line will bring the Messiah. This is the dispensation of human governance. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 13. 4. Abrahamic Covenant 4. The Abrahamic covenant - Gen 12:1-4, 13:14-17, 15:1-7, 17:1-8 - 3 lines of profound promise are given, a. Abraham would have prosperity, blessing and a great name b. A great nation, Israel, would emerge, including the 12 tribes who were promised the land c. Through Abraham the entire world would be blessed - fulfilled through Israel (esp.prophets) revealing God, then through Jesus Christ. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 14. Unconditional - if Israel chose to live in this they got blessed, if not, they went into exile etc. Relies on God not man - it will/did happen - including birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 15. Unconditional - if Israel chose to live in this they got blessed, if not, they went into exile etc. Relies on God not man - it will/did happen - including birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 16. 5. Mosaic Covenant 5. The Mosaic Covenant - through Moses to Israel - Ex 20:1-31:18 - Moses given law to govern God’s relation to Israel - 600+ commandments relating to; a. Express will of God - the commandments Ex 20:1-26 b. Judgements for social and civic life - Ex 21:1-24:11 c. Ordinances of God - Ex 24:12-31:18 Conditional - if Israel obeyed God would bless and vice versa, temporary terminating at the cross, a few elements of grace but essentially a covenant of works. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 17. 6. Palestinian Covenant 6. The Palestinian covenant - Dt 31:1-10, Israel will possess the land promised to them - unconditional and secure yet with conditional elements for each generation Gen 12:7 etc. - yet time in Egypt, wilderness, exile etc. There is a final promise of restoration and life in the land for Israel - Ezek 39:25-29, Amos9:14-15 Israel will be fully returned after the return of Jesus Christ - so ultimately this is unconditional, God will fulfill it. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 18. 7. Davidic Covenant 7. The Davidic covenant - 2 Sam 7:14-16, 1 Chron 17:3-15 - unconditional promise of an unending royal line and kingdom forever - God will break in and discipline David’s sons if he wants to but the covenant cannot be broken. Guarantees Israel an everlasting throne, king and kingdom. The line is completed in Jesus Christ. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 19. 7. Davidic Covenant 7. The Davidic covenant - 2 Sam 7:14-16,theChron 17:3-15 - This assures 1 millennial rule of Christ with David unconditional promise of an (resurrected) reigning under unending royal line and kingdom forever - of the house Christ as a prince God will of Israel - Jer 23:5-6, Ezek break in and discipline David’s 34:23-24, 37:24 sons if he wants to but the covenant cannot beis an The David kingdom broken. Guarantees Israelan earthly earthly one with an everlasting throne, kingGod’s throne, it is the key to and kingdom. The line is yet to prophetic programme be fulfilled completed in Jesus Christ. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 20. 8. New Covenant 8. The new covenant prophesied in the OT will have its primary fulfillment in the millennial kingdom - Jer 31:31-33 - a new covenant with the house of Israel, Judah. 33-34 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more." Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 21. Chafer states, “This passage anticipates the circumstances of the millennial kingdom where Christ is to be reigning, all will know the facts about Jesus Christ. It will not be necessary to evangelize...for all will know the facts about Jesus Christ. It will be a period in which God will forgive Israel’s sin and bless them abundantly” Obviously this is not being fulfilled in this day. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 22. The NT relates the church to the new covenant - so some believe the church fulfills the promise to Israel, Israel and the church become the same with all promises now spiritualised. Chafer says another option is, “Others who recognise Israel’s future restoration and the millennial kingdom consider the NT references to be an application of the general truths of the future covenant with Israel to the church or to distinguish two covenants (one for Israel and one through Jesus Christ providing grace now for the church).” Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 23. The new covenant is all based on the ground of the blood of Jesus, and that god promises he will a. Save, preserve and present in heaven all who have believed in Jesus Christ - believing is the ground for admission (not part of the covenant) - so the covenant is made with the saved, not unsaved - God then promises to keep them and present them in glory. This is all unconditional - mans actions might bring discipline but God will keep his covenant promise. (Jn 5:24, 6:37) It does involve absolute control by God - but Chafer states so did Noah and Abraham’s covenants Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 24. So it is a manifestation of God’s sovereignty and power yet there is some exercise of human will - God both controls (Jn 6:44, Phil 2:13) and appeals to (Jn 5:40, 7:17, Rom 12:1, 1Jn 1:9), the will of man. God is sovereign - yet there is latitude in his allowing men their own will - this means there is no fatalism or dethroning of God. Tuesday 26 April 2011
  • 25. b. The future salvation of Israel is promised in the new covenant - Isa 27:9, Ezek 37:23, Rom 11:26-27 Accomplished on the ground of the shed blood of Jesus Christ - through which a nation or an individual can be saved by God. Matt 13:44 - Israel is the treasure hid in the field (world) To summarise covenants; God is sovereign in unconditional covenants - and whatever he has undertaken will happen. Man has failed and the outworking of the covenants is conditional Tuesday 26 April 2011
