In this presentation you will learn various features of ORCID for building your profile and showcase your research. This workshop was conducted by Ambedkar University Delhi on 22 January 2021.

How to use orcid to build your work and reseach profile
1.
2. What is ORCID
ORCID is a global, not-for-profit organization sustained by fees from
member organizations.
ORCID’s Vision…is a world where all who
participate in research, scholarship, and innovation
are uniquely identified and connected to their
contributions across disciplines, borders, and time
16-digit ORCID identifier
0000-0002-1371-1157
3. Purpose
ORCID connects people with their research activities. This includes:
• employment affiliations,
• research outputs,
• funding,
• peer review activity,
• research resources,
• society membership,
• distinctions and
• other scholarly infrastructure.
4. ORCID provides us:
• The ORCID iD: a unique, persistent identifier free of charge to
researchers
• An ORCID record connected to the ORCID iD, and
• A set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), as well as the
services and support of communities of practice that enable
interoperability between an ORCID record and member organizations
so researchers can choose to allow connection of their iD with their
affiliations and contributions
5. How it work?
• ORCID supports the creation of a permanent, clear, and unambiguous
record of research and scholarly communication by enabling reliable
attribution of authors and contributors.
• ORCID transcends discipline, geographic, national, and institutional
boundaries.
• Participation in ORCID is open to any organization that has an interest
in research and scholarly communications.
6. How it work?
• Access to ORCID services is based on transparent and non-
discriminatory terms posted on the ORCID website.
• Researchers are able to create, edit, and maintain an ORCID identifier
and record free of charge.
• Researchers can control the defined privacy settings of their own
ORCID record data.
7. How it work?
• All data contributed to ORCID by researchers or claimed by them is
available in standard formats for free download (subject to the
researchers’ own privacy settings) that are updated once a year and
released under a CC0 waiver.
• All software developed by ORCID is publicly released under an Open
Source Software license approved by the Open Source Initiative. For
the software it adopts, ORCID will prefer Open Source.
8. How it work?
• ORCID identifiers and record data (subject to privacy settings) is made
available via a combination of no-charge and for-a-fee APIs and
services. Any fees will be set to ensure the sustainability of ORCID as a
not-for-profit, charitable organization focused on the long-term
persistence of the ORCID system.
• ORCID is governed by representatives from a broad cross-section of
stakeholders, the majority of whom are not-for-profit, and strive for
maximal transparency by publicly posting summaries of all Board
meetings and annual financial reports.
9. Benefits for Researchers
• Distinction from every other researcher, even researchers who share
your same name
• Correct Attribution
• Reliable connection to your contributions and affiliations
• Improved discoverability and recognition
• connect your record to a growing number of institutions, funders, and
publishers
• Your ORCID record is yours, for free, forever
13. ORCID with ‘X’ at the end
• ORCID identifiers that end in X are valid and correct.
• ORCID identifiers are all randomly assigned and cannot be changed.
The last character in an ORCID identifier is a checksum. It ranges in
values from “0” – “10,” with X representing the value “10.” The
checksum ensures the other 15 digits of your identifier form a
coherent iD.
25. How to add works to your ORCID
record
1. Add works by direct import from other
systems to import links to your
publications and other works to your
ORCID record from other databases.
This is the recommended process
because it reduces or eliminates
errors, and enables a reliable
connection between your ORCID iD
and your works
2. Add works using an identifier
3. Importing works from a BibTeX file
4. Add works manually
