Write down as many things you can think of that you say to yourself in a normal day. Recordings that run through your mind. Now write just things that you say or think when life is giving you lemons. Hold on to this. We will come back to it.
What is the Soul of man? The mind. It is the processor, the CPU. It creates the avenue by which everything in the heart is processed. The brain produces electrical activity, and when left to itself, can fire off thoughts, that if not captured and destroyed, can create a rut, or a neural pathway to a “document” in the heart. This is one way we allow things to be written on the tablet of our heart. We will be learning about how to take these thoughts captive. The Will The will is the ego self. It is where desires come from. It is the part of a baby that doesn’t care that it cries in the middle of a movie or a sermon. It just wants her needs met. The Emotions These often emanate from the will. Emotions are not bad. God has emotions, he gave us our emotions, but they must also be trained and monitored.
The heart When the mind is allowed to continually create the same random thought, it starts to write a document that becomes stored in the heart as RAM. Repetition is one way things are written on our heart. When something is written on our heart, it becomes our true heart belief. The heart is the gate-keeper. Once a thought is processed and written on the heart, it rejects anything that is contrary to the belief that has been formed. If the thought coming in through the mind does not agree with what is written on the heart, it will be rejected. The mind may be intrigued, it may know that what is being said is truth, but the mind cannot write a new belief by ordering the will around. Whatever is written on the heart prevails. Dr Jim Richards says that another way things are written on our heart is when we have two things: information and emotions. These beliefs of the heart are often based in erroneous, or false information, and are seeded in our heart from words spoken by others or even ourselves. These words are like arrows greased with emotions and easily penetrated our hearts. It doesn’t matter if they were true or not, our hearts accepted them as truth. It is these false beliefs that limit us, bring pain into our lives and cause us to question the BIBLE, and GOD, just like Eve in the Garden. I think we usually FEEL these arrows as they strike.
This is very important to understand, because the heart is where the Spirit and the soul, meet. David says: Thy Word I have hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee. And tonight, We are going to learn a process by which we to, can rewrite these documents of faith written on our hearts. First: lets look at the woman whose spirit is still un-regenerated:
The Unregenerate woman lives from her soul. Her spirit is void of Christ, and is unable to influence her. This effects: Her mind- what she thinks Her Will- what she wants Her emotions- what she feels. So, the un-regenerated heart, is a Carnal, or natural heart, without God’s influence
When we became born again our hearts were infused with the life of Christ. Our faith was ignited like a pilot light when we believed in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. With that, everything changed.
The Christian now has a regenerated spirit. Christ has come in and made his home in our hearts. He brings with him all that God is and all that God has, and Christ shares his inheritance with us. His perfect life and innocent sacrifice won for him and for us total righteousness. Now, We are made complete and once again reflect His image. Our Spirit is sealed with the HS. All of who God is, is contained in our Spirit. It is the Spirit within us that we want to influence our heart, once we are saved. Although our spirit is alive and full of Christ, our SOUL still needs to be conformed to the image of God. When we live out of our carnal nature, not even noticing the negative thoughts that pour from us, we are also ignoring the influence of the HS. Yes, We are born again, but when we live from the soul, we are probably not living the life Christ died to give us, nor are we the witness we could be, for we seem no different than anyone else. Since the heart is where the Soul and the Spirit meet, then a believer who lives out of her soul, can lose touch with her heart, so-to-speak.
Pro 4:23 Keep (guard) thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. When we allow those errant thoughts to take root, or the arrows pierce out heart, or we don’t deal with the appetites of the heart our hearts can become hardened. In The Sacred Romance, by John Eldridge, it says: “ To lose heart is to lose everything It is tragic when we lose touch with our heart. Most of us watch over the oil level in our car more closely than the life in our heart. Christianity is a love affair of the heart. But we often fail to safe guard it and drift.” Living out of our soul, and losing touch with the heart allows The love affair to wane, and our heart becomes deaf to what the Spirit is saying. Obedience is a chore, a duty, a SHOULD. God doesn’t want us to should on ourselves. He wants our heart.
Author of several of the Chicken Soup books, Marci Shimoff’s, says in her book titled: Happy for No Reason: Says that according to scientists, we have about 60,000 thoughts a day: That’s 1 thought per second during every waking hr. 95% of those thoughts are the same ones you had yesterday, and the day before and the day before that…. These Recordings are on perpetual “repeat”…. We get in a rut. 80% of those habitual thoughts are … NEGATIVE! That gives us more than 45,000 negative thoughts a day! Best selling author Dr Daniel Amen, a psychologist and author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, gave this a name: ANTS: Automatic Negative Thoughts! Those ants are crawling all over us! EWWW!
So how do we guard our heart? Well, a guard’s job is to: Protect, safeguard, Keep things under control or restraint, uses prudence, and Impede or obstructs progress. Our heart does a great job of this, protecting our beliefs, right ones and wrong ones. We must re-write the truth on our hearts, first, and then guard it with all our might. Strong emotions about something are critically important to listen to and take note of. Dealing with the thoughts immediately, and refuting the poison of the arrows upon impact helps us stay in a place of peace and walking in truth.
We are told to renew our mind and to surrender our will, and not let our emotions produce vain imaginations. But unless we are able to control our thoughts, take them captive to the obedience of Christ, our soul will probably run our lives. First, We will have to stop asking our mind what it thinks, And the will what IT wants and our emotions what THEY FEEL!
Pauls says this: Rom 7:15 What I don't understand about myself is that I decide one way, but then I act another, doing things I absolutely despise. So if I can't be trusted to figure out what is best for myself and then do it, it becomes obvious that God's command is necessary. But I need something more! For if I know the law but still can't keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don't have what it takes. I can will it, but I can't do it. 19 I decide to do good, but I don't really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don't result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time. It happens so regularly that it's predictable. The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly delight in God's commands, but it's pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge. Rom 7:24 I've tried everything and nothing helps. I'm at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? Isn't that the real question? The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does. He acted to set things right in this life of contradictions where I want to serve God with all my heart and mind, but am pulled by the influence of sin to do something totally different.
READ SLIDE First, we must renew our mind and surrender our will THROUGH GOD. We cannot do it ourselves. Second, we must take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. It all begins with what we believe in our heart, and the thoughts that go through our head WEAPONS: the instrument by which something is done. (the death, burial and resurrection) WARFARE: The difficulties that oppose us in our apostolic duties MIGHTY: Strong in SOUL, Able STRONGHOLD: the argument and reasoning's one uses to defend their opinion CASTING DOWN: detach from, demolish the subtle reasoning of our opponents IMAGINATIONS: reasonings that are hostile to the Christian TRUTH. So this verse might as well just say: For our faith in the death, burial and resurrection in Christ combats these difficulties that oppose us. Through this faith, by the Grace of God, we can squash the arguments and reasonings that are hostile to the Christian truth as we demolish every thing that exalts itself against the truth of God and bring into captivity, every thought to the obedience of Christ.
PULL OUT YOUR PRE-TEST. Like all of us, I am still working through some sour lemons in my life, so here are some of the thoughts that I find running through my head: I can’t do this I give up. I am lonely I feel overwhelmed Did anyone else have anything like this written down? What are some of yours? What is behind all these arguments, reasoning's and opinions that have become strongholds, imaginations, hindrances, written on our hearts? Soulish, carnal self-talk, which comes from not taking every thought captive, and from unbelief.
We can be just as carnal as the non-believer if we live out of our soul. These strongholds are unrestrained, natural thoughts of unbelief. Not that we don’t have faith, but faith is on a continuum with unbelief. We definitely HAVE the measure of FAITH, but we may also have more unbelief in a certain area than we have exercised faith. We may have more of one or the other in every area we face. It is the original sin. It is the only sin! Everything falls under unbelief either through ignorance or choice. ROMANS 14 Whatever is not of faith is sin.
Self-talk Satan’s lies to us. Yes. But those lies only works when it is something we already want or struggle with. I don’t think Eve would have not fallen if she had not already been thinking about it. She must have been wondering about that fruit… she obviously added to what the Word of the Lord was concerning it… She put laws there, that God did not sanction. Satan’s Lies are his only weapon. Vain imaginations, false accusations, fear, worry, NEGATIVE EMOTIONS… unbelief! He knows that if he can bring dissatisfaction into our lives, we will question God, neglect our heart, and be miserable. These Negative thoughts bring negative emotions and they rob us of the blessings of God. Satan preys upon our carnal weaknesses Self talk also comes from ourselves. Our own carnality, with or without Satanic influence: Jas 1:14-15 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Dissatisfaction causes us to: Justify something Take on a victim mentality Wanting something badly enough to manipulate (we usually Create circumstantial theology to justify it) We May get what we want, but will also get us what we DON’T want!
Why is it so important to talk about negative thoughts, and words? Breeds Depression Gives us a Victim mentality Produces a sense of Lack Creates sickness Feelings of rejection or worthlessness Insecurity And myriad of things that are LIES to those of us who ARE, IN CHRIST! It is the outcome of unbelief. How can we be witnesses if we walk around this way? We are to be believers.
Someone read Phillipians 4:verses 6 and 8 The cure is found in: Prayer and Supplication Thanksgiving And thinking and speaking, the truth. What is the truth?
Prayer… appropriating the Grace of God (his influence upon our heart, helping us do what we cant do) and Supplication: the ongoing prayer of intervention for others Just as Paul said he couldn’t do what he wanted to do, and needed God to help, so do we! We must determine that we want to stop walking in negative self-talk and get God’s help. Even our verse from 2 cor 10 says our weapons are mighty THROUGH GOD.
Thanksgiving for all God has done! Builds faith and breeds hope. I have started a thankfulness journal that I write in daily. I write down anything and everything I can think of that I am thankful for. It helps me keep a positive attitude and sets the stage for transformation! If the heart is filled with thankfulness, it is hard to stuff the bad feelings in too!
Someone read the verses: But for tonight, I want to continue concentrating on taking our thoughts captive: SO whatever we allow to run through our head, whatever we allow ourselves to believe that is contrary to the Word of God, is… a lie. We don’t even realize how often we actually lie! To others, to ourselves, even to God when we live from a carnal mind influenced by an unregenerated heart! WE cannot walk in the blessings of God if we go around speaking the curse. WE cannot be witnesses of the goodness of God if we talk about the evil in our lives
We must take every thought captive into the obedience of Christ, the truth of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, and His Word. Remember, What is our weapon? The WEAPON is the Cross and the Word and all it means. The truth, the Word of God is what demolishes the reasonings, arguments and vain imaginations that slip by unnoticed or dismissed.
We need to take EVERY ANT, (automatic negative thought) captive!
God is in the exterminating business, we should be too! It wouldn’t be enough to just kill the ANTs we have. We also have to prevent the offspring of those ANTs, or other pests (Pessimistically entertained self-talk situations) before they get a chance to become established in these temples of God…. Again, through prayer, supplication and thanksgiving, and taking every thought captive.
I have a started a journal that incorporates several components: It inclues the thankfulness journal we mentioned earlier…
In my journal, I confess these truths when a thought tries to sneak in…. I take it captive through the truth! 1. Acknowledge the lie – and pray. Ask for wisdom and the truth 2. Write down the truth under the ANT- the lie. 3. Pray and ask God to show you scripture to replace the lie with Meditate on them, confess them, speak them daily When Ants try to attack, take them captive with the truth!
Before you go home, find an accountability partner you can be vulnerable with. For the next week, talk to one another every day. Encourage each other, confess to each other, rejoice together and pray for one another. Keep a log of every negative thought, feeling, or desire and study the Word to find out what the TRUTH is. If you get stuck, ask for help from your accountability partner. Write the truth beside the lie and each time the lie tries to speak, or exalt itself, bring it into captivity with the truth of the word. HAND OUT
From this day forward: Make a list of things you are thankful for and write in it every day. Take it with you during the day if you want. If doesn’t matter if you write the same thing down several times. It doesn’t matter if you can only think of a few things at first. The point is to be thankful. Spend time every day giving thanks to God for these things Be sure to tell others if you write something down about them! (Share it! Encourage others!) 2. Praise, honor, worship our Lord daily. 3. Prayer and supplication, pray in the spirit. Call on His grace to help you.
When God starts showing you how much negativity you have been walking in, and you start to notice the lies you speak, interrupt yourself, correct yourself and speak out things you are thankful for. Praise. Worship. Speak the truth instead.
When an ANT (automatic negative thought) lifts itself up, Flatten it! Flatten lies and think truth 4 every negative internal thought!
Those secret lies that we have written on our hearts have been exposed. We are going to be an army of the TRUTH. We will be witnesses of Gods Life in us, His Hope. His Church. WE will be proclaiming the goodness of God in our hearts, and by it, be transformed into His image. We are going to write the Word on our hearts and set ourselves free to receive God’s best.
