Stand Up Straight: Tips for Improving Your Posture
If you are looking for a sure way to
improve your core strength, lessen back
pain and improve your overall health,
consider adjusting your posture. Poor
posture causes stress on the spine,
shoulders, hips and knees, leading to a
variety of health complaints. If you find
yourself regularly slouching or hunching
while seated or standing, these tips will
help you stand a little straighter.
Look in the Mirror
Before you try to change your posture, take a look in the mirror. Identify
areas where your posture suffers. When you look in the mirror, you should
see your shoulders, ears, and hips in alignment. This promotes the proper
"S" curve to the spine.
Strengthen the Muscles
Once you identify your areas of weakness, use exercise to target the
muscles. If you are hunching your shoulders forward, for instance, you need
to strengthen the muscles in the back of your shoulders. To do this, stand up

choose other exercises to improve strength of other parts of your body.

uncomfortable at first as your body adjusts to the new posture, but over
time you will adjust.
Take Some Breaks
Even people with perfect posture will start to slump when sitting at their
desk all day long. Start with good posture, and take a break to stretch and
give your body a break whenever you fell yourself slouching. Then, reset
your posture to encourage proper alignment as you begin work again.
Good posture is essential to a healthy lifestyle. If you are looking for
additional help with strengthening your core so you can practice good
posture, contact Raritan Physical Therapy.
