In early July 2015, golfer Bubba Watson announced
his plans to paint over the Confederate flag on his
collectible 1969 Dodge Charger. Known colloquially
as “General Lee,” the car has a storied history that
includes use on the television show Dukes of Hazzard
in the 1980s. An estimated 250 to 320 General Lee
cars were uses throughout the life of the show, with
approximately 17 known cars remaining.
3. One of six cars used in the first Dukes of Hazzard
episodes, the car that Watson owns appears in a
sequence of the show’s opening credits.
It eventually ended up in a junk yard in a state of
disrepair. Recognized because it was labeled “LEE 1,”
the car was fully restored and sold at auction in 2012.
Watson acquired the General Lee for approximately
$120,000 and later enhanced it with an autograph
from John Schneider, one of the stars of the program.
The Volo Auto Museum has offered to purchase the
car from Watson before he repaints.
