3. Why trim the shaft at all?
• Manufacturers produce longer-than-normal raw length
shafts to accommodate a wide range of golfer’s
heights
• Trimming the shaft also controls the flex
• Each manufacturer has logical reason why they
suggest the recommended trimming

4. Anatomy of the Shaft
Unitized – To decrease inventory, one
shaft can be used to build an entire set of
irons and one shaft can be used to build an
entire set of woods through successive
trimming of the tip section.
Parallel tip - The tip is one constant
diameter up to a certain point on the shaft.
Typical diameters are typically .335"
and .350" for woods, and .370" and for
irons.
Taper tip - The tip is made to gradually
increase larger in diameter from the tip up
to a specified point on the shaft. Taper tip
steel shafts are made with a .0075"/ inch
tapering rate on irons up to the beginning
of the tip parallel section. A common tip
taper diameter for OEM irons is .355".

5. Do You Trim the Butt, Tip or Both Ends?
It often depends upon the length of the
parallel tip section, for instance:
Unitized steel shafts have long parallel
tip sections and generally are trimmed
in ½” increments per club.
Graphite shafts generally have shorter
parallel tip sections than steel.
Therefore the shafts might be trimmed
in smaller increments per club, but can
be as much as ½” too.
Tapered shafts cannot be tip trimmed –
everything comes from the butt end
otherwise the shaft will not fit inside
the corresponding hosel diameter.

6. Where do you find the trimming information?
• Shaft manufacturer’s website
• Component companies will either place this information in their catalog, website or
send out on a piece of paper with each order
• Charts and nomenclature may be different from each manufacturer, results the same

3. Pay attention to any trimming notes that may apply
TRIMMING NOTES
1. For M1 metal woods add 1 1/2" tip trimming, for M2 metal woods add 1" tip
trimming, for blind bore add 1/2" tip trimming, for through bore do not add to
tip trimming. (Applies only to those shafts which have a Trim Note 1 next
to the letter code)
2. For non-bore through iron heads, trim 1" additionally from the tip. (Applies
to True Temper's TT Lite R&S iron shafts only!)
3. For fairway woods, tip trim 1" (Applies to Aldila NV, NVS, DVS, VS Proto and
Voodoo woods only!)
4. Do not tip trim more than 3” off the tip (applies to Select New Image woods
and junior composite woods only!)

11. Bottom of Bore to Ground Line:
Hybrids, Irons and Wedges
• Pay close attention when
mixing and matching club
head models with
different shafts
• Use the same principles
used in woods to
standardize trimming in
order to maintain flex
• Insert shaft into the hosel and measure overall length, subtract the
raw length of the shaft yielding the bottom of bore to ground line

12. Combination Flex Shafts
There are five primary flexes. These are referred to as “discrete flexes”.
Ladies (L), Senior (A), Regular (R), Stiff (S) and Extra Stiff (X)
Shafts can be made to possess two (or more) separate flexes within a
single shaft. These are commonly called “combination flex” and used to
cut down on inventory.
