Raju Lama completed a 15-day internship at Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal as part of his degree requirements for a Bachelor of Travel and Tourism Management. As an intern, he assisted the Terminal Duty Office with tasks like providing flight information to travelers, maintaining the terminal facilities, and handling passenger queries. Through this experience, he learned about airport operations including runway management, customs processes, and cargo handling. 2. MEANING : INTERNSHIP
DEFINITION ;- An internship is a work-related
learning experience for individuals who wish to
develop hands on work experience in a certain
occupational field.
An excellent way to determine if the industry and
the profession is the best career option.
Provide real world experience to those looking to
explore or gain the relevant knowledge and skills
required to enter into a particular career field.

Gives opportunity to apply knowledge in real

Develops skills helping to perform better at their

Greatly increase the chances that the internee

• We were given a chance to elect a organization that we
wish to work for.
• Choose TIA to gain more knowledge about travel operation
and management technique.
• Went to TIA, meet Mr. Chabilal Ojha (Head, Safety and
Security Dept). He then introduce us to Mr. Dinesh Joshi
(Head, Terminal Duty Office)
• Accepted us as internee Terminal Duty Officers.
• Duration : 21 May to 8 June ( 15 days)
• Schedule : 6am to 12pm
5. INTRODUCTION OF TIA
Airport began as Gauchar Airport, named after the area of
Kathmandu where it was situated.
It is the sole international airport in Nepal and has one
domestic terminal and one international.
In 1964, the airport was renamed Tribhuvan International
Airport.
Current runway is 10,000 feet (3,000 m) which was made
in 1975.
It covers an area of 10,240 meters square.
The formal beginning of aviation in Nepal occurred in 1949
with landing of four-seater, Beechcraft Bonanza aircraft,
carrying the Indian ambassador, Calcutta to Gaucher.
First jet aircraft to land in TIA is Lufthansa Boeing 707 in
1967.
Royal Nepal Airlines started jet operations at the airport in
1972 with Boeing 727 aircraft.
At present, about 30 international airlines connect Nepal to
other country.
It was officially inaugurated in February 1990 by his

7. TERMINAL DUTY OFFICER
DUTY
• Works as part of team that carries out day to day
operating activities of an airport.
• Look after passengers, assist other airport staffs and
maintaining terminal facilities.
• Provide answers to passenger queries, helps queuing
for check in desks and departures.
• Reports any breakage, damages to airport
maintenance staff for smooth operation of terminal.
8. What we did in internship (TIA)
Flight information provided to the travelers incoming,
outgoing schedules, ETA (Estimated Time Arrival).
Assisted to Terminal Duty Office heads, staffs and
participated to the overall management.
Information given by tower was provided to the
announcement department so as to update manually.
Information desk handling.
Terminal section overall maintenance was handled
and reported.
Visited Runway, taxi area, bay area, Royal Nepal
hangers, domestic & international terminal, custom,
transit area, visa section, cargo section. Gained
knowledge of overall airport operation.
Ensured for smooth operation around airport.
Assisted to the travelers providing them as much
information on their issues.
Handled phone calls at TDO department.
9. CONCLUSION
Working in an Tribhuwan International Airport was
a pleasure for me.
Has broadened my knowledge of airline
operations and controlling mechanism at the
airport.
