1. Transforming Education using Open Web Learning – GEG Goa Status Report
I Background
Education Landscape Goa
Goa is the fourth smallest state in India with 87.4% literacy rate .Goa enjoys a place of pride in the
country as one of the most literate states of India. English is the main medium of Instruction. Most of
the schools are affiliated to State board. Quality of state government schools is very good.
Approximately 11k teachers for K12 cater to 2.5 Lakh students from Primary level to Sr. Secondary
level.
II The Beginning
In November 2014, Learning Links Foundation senior officials had some initial discussion with Dr
Vernal, Former, Dean (Education), Goa University to initiate a Google solution Pilot in a State .
Google and Learning Links Foundation senior officials’ team along with Dr Vernal, Former, Dean
(Education), Goa University had meetings with Mr. J. R. Rebello – Chairman - Goa Board of
Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Nagaraj G. Honnekeri – Director, SCERT where
Google and its programs were introduced. However, it was decided to deal first with MOOC.
Chairman, Goa board sent e- mails to as many Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools. Press
notes were also issued urging teachers to register for MOOC.
III Introductory Google workshops
In November 2nd week Google Apps and tools and MOOC workshop was conducted as part of Pre
– Planned Goa board workshops attended by 38 Physics Teachers at the Higher Secondary level and
another workshop for 34 Head Masters and ICT teachers.
In November 3rd week Learning Links Foundation Team along with Dr Vernal, Former, Dean
(Education), Goa University had meetings with
✓ Dr Satish R Shetye, Vice Chancellor, Goa University where Google and MOOC, Google
Student Clubs & Google Student Ambassadors in Goa. He was very positive regarding
MOOC and took the website details. He sent e-mails to all the Principals of the 50 odd
affiliating Colleges as well as to the Faculty in the University campus. Team suggested
Chrome devices could be one option when Vice Chancellor said that his main challenge is
making laptop compulsory for all professional colleges and asked whether Google could
provide support.

Chairman suggested that to conduct 2.5/ 3hr Google workshops as part of the RMSA subject
wise workshops for teachers at different locations where min 50 subject teachers will be
attending the workshop. This workshop should include you tube, Google search, Google
docs, Research. i.e Module 1 MOOC.
2. IV Google Goa Plan
● Google plans to partner with the Education ministry of Goa to strengthen online skill
development for teachers and students in schools and university.
● On Teacher skill development, co-development of a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course)
with the Goa Government in order to upgrade teacher pedagogical skills for increased usage
of web for teaching and learning in classrooms. Google is keen to strengthen various
segments for Goa Education pyramid and would invest in various community programs under
K -12, Higher Education, Professional Colleges.
V. First Level of Google Training
RMSA suggested to conduct Google workshops in 6 different locations for Maths, Social
Science, English, Hindi subject wise workshops which will be attended by min 30 – 50 teachers
per workshop. Google workshop schedule was discussed and finalised. Workshops were
conducted as per the schedule and identified leads.
Regular meetings were held with Govt. officials and shared Google workshops update.
VI. Highlights
Chairman, Goa Board and RMSA officials were very appreciative about Google workshops as
teachers gave an excellent feedback.
As requested by Chairman Google Web Literacy workshops were conducted as part of the
Science teachers’ workshops too.
VII GEG – Goa Q1 Update
18 Google workshops were conducted attended by 1153 teachers and identified 168 GEG potential
leads across 5 subjects. Details:
