  • With the massive innovation and maturation of cloud technologies and services in the IT community over the past couple of years now is the time to evaluate new approaches to build flexibility and resiliency into your business strategy. When you incorporate the latest in cloud technology you can optimize your infrastructure and applications to enable rapid deployments, elegantly handle demand and go to market faster.
  • Niki – In addition to your message, please make mention of you open cloud model and with Openstack, it is designed to be open to allow an iterative model that one can layer in a multitude of various solutions, such as RightScale, depending on your specific needs and use cases.
  • Speaker instruction:This is a good jumping off point to have customer discussions regarding the roadmap and overall portfolio.
  • Hybrid or multicloud modelToo product focused rather than conceptual
  • Now the journey to the cloud is one of maturity. How far to you want to go and what is the right need and outcome desired for your business, well that is up to you. The main thing is that if you understand the maturity curve up front, it will help you determine what you want to be when you grow up. Lets talk a few moments to explain each step and value generated. Provisioning time – If all you do is launch a server to the OS or bootstrapped an image, you have improved the speed of getting a server to work on by x weeks, but other than that you have only really moved from a cap ex to op ex model.Server Automation – Launching servers via scripts allow you to now launch a server through the entire application stack. It is still a static server, without knowledge of other servers in its deployment it must work with.Multi-Cloud or Hybrid Cloud – This is where the use of templates come in. The ability to build and maintain in one place and use anywhere is a major milestone vs managing image sprawl. Additionally the ability to provide governance across all your resource clouds with financial visibility, user permissions and reporting is a widely growing need.Application Automation - is the ultimate goal. To achieve this level, it requires the combination of functions incorporating deep meaningful API integration allowing synchronization across launching/destroying servers, incorporating configuration management, such as using chef or any other language you are comfortable scripting in, and the use of templates, monitoring, alerting. Only this combination of functions provides the automated application awareness to be highly available, self-healing and scalable all on its own.Continuous Optimization - Now that you have mastered your way to the top, the effort and focus has now shifted from maintaining infrastructure to the continuous optimization of your applications and business. RightScale uniquely positioned as the only Cloud Management framework that can solely manage all the elements required to deliver application automation in the cloud. We bridge the gap from quick provisioning of servers to the optimization of your applications.
  • Making your applications cloud-aware is the first step to optimizing the Cloud. When you create cloud-aware applications you build in features so your applications can dynamically scale, enable failover, run on any infrastructure and change quickly as needed based on business demands. This is a flip from the traditional model of leading with infrastructure, which can limit the agility of your application. In the traditional role, such as with vmware exampled here, one builds functionality based on the hypervisor, additional management tools are there to help better manage vms but in the end the infrastructure is built to a certain number of 9s and then the application is layered on and told to live in the world already created. This is a closed model, with each layer dependent on the underlying layer. Take one layer out and the stack collapses. In the cloud approach design is a top–down model. The application is king and it dictates to the underlying infrastructure on when, how and to what level it is will be consumed. This is an open model, meaning that it is designed to be iterative by allowing flexibility of choice in the stack. Hypervisor features that many folks have grown accustomed to such as vMotion, HA and fault tolerance are now handled at the higher levels of the stack: at the application, cloud manager and orchestration levels offering control not only at the OS but the entire application stack. Now to take advantage of this model, one must unbundle their applications from the traditional model and unbundle them in scripts that can run specific functions at boot, during operations or termination. There is no silver bullet for this transition, but we have the expertise and prebuilt assets to help you along the way. So when you begin with the application, it provides increases in automation, consistency and choice the cloud can provide while lowering your costs while being more responsive and better aligned to meet the needs of the business. RightScale and Rackspace joint solutions serve many enterprise cloud-aware application workloads including dynamic/auto scaling workloads, high availability/fault tolerant production workloads, and overall lifecycle management from Test/Dev to Production.
  • Define Your Cloud and Make it your own. There is no denying the influence public clouds have had on the delivery of IT to the enterprise. IT seeks to create internal systems based on existing hardware and provide on-demand access to resources. There are many reasons for building your own private cloud but some reasons include: performance(you know your applications best and optimizing the semantics of your infrastructure for those specific needs will return the best results), Cap Ex vs Op Ex, compliance, etc. A proven, private cloud configuration architecture developed by Rackspace and powered by OpenStack can dramatically speed up your efforts. There are many reasons for building your own private cloud but some reasons include: performance(you know your applications best and optimizing the semantics of your infrastructure for those specific needs will return the best results), Cap Ex vs Op Ex, compliance, etc. Couple that with full-feature management from RightScale and the result will be your own internal Cloud. Utilize our joint solution to create your private cloud stack  with customizations specific to your business  and you can quickly be up and running. This will enable your teams to speed up their processes and create happier customers.
  • Unified Management - As an enterprise begins the journey of building a private cloud they should always consider a hybrid model. Hybrid clouds provide the best of both worlds. With a hybrid cloud model you maximize your existing investment and gain the power of public cloud resources when needed. The hybrid framework enables your teams to take full advantage of the benefits that on-demand public and private clouds provide. Build to the base and expand to the peak. The RightScale and Rackspace integrated offering allows you to easily construct and manage a low latency hybrid model  launching and managing all your applications and infrastructure choices from a unified dashboard. Build once and use everywhere is the main advantage achieved here. The unification of our configuration management and our monitoring and alerting functions will provide you with all the automation for flexibility and resiliency. Coupled with our governance controls of user privileges, real time financials and reporting it will provide all the visibility required.
  • Behance is a platform that allows creative professionals to build and update portfolios of their work. Their ‘publish here, appear everywhere’ model allows creatives to keep their portfolios updated in one place and distribute them across the web. Over 10 million users a month with intensive utilizationChallenge – high imagery storage content and need for high DB performance along with automation and consistency across their middleware applications. Started with Rackspace to provide the the Hybrid model of Cloud servers and dedicated servers. Called Rack ConnectStreamline Provisioning and Configuration – ability to create and deploy new applications by using Rightscripts to easily share configurations and deploy them into production.Automation and Scale – Meet demand when needed in real time. Only a couple folks to manage an environment that runs in the hundreds. The application is self adjusting without human interaction.
  • In the end the achievement is Workload Freedom:The flexibility you gain from an iterative, application-led lifecycle management approach versus a rip and replace infrastructure approach keeps your choices open. Mix and match public, private and hybrid clouds to precisely match your business and customer needs. As Niki mentioned previously, Rackspace can provide you with choice to run your clouds in various ways and physical locations unmatched in the marketplace. Your own private cloud, a hosted private cloud, or use of any of their globally placed public clouds. The combination of RightScale automates and optimizes the applications to work in any of these environments from a single template and single pane of glass. Our teams have deep experience on how best to migrate applications and design application-centric cloud architecture.
  • I will take a break there and pass the baton to our Cloud Engineer, Ryan Geyer who will demonstrate some of the RightScale automated framework running on Rackspace Private and Public Clouds
  • I am ready to commit to the cloud…where do I start? RightScale and Rackspace offer an onboarding process to get you started quickly. We’ll bring our joint expertise to your organization – defining and scoping your enterprise cloud needs. Take advantage of our many years working with leading organizations to maximize their IT delivery with public, private and hybrid models all backed by our industry leading support. Lets review what each of these sections will actually deliver to you:
  • Touch to users don’t have to manage the cloud
