The document provides an evaluation of the production process for a short horror film. It discusses conducting research and surveys to understand the target audience which was mostly male. Jump scares were identified as something that would appeal to the audience. During planning and filming, inspiration was drawn from the styles of Insidious and Candyman in terms of mood, music and use of mirrors. Peer feedback praised the cohesive storytelling and soundtrack but noted some unnecessary scenes and lack of resolution. Room for improvement includes lighting, focus, sound effects and tightening the storyline. Overall the producer is proud of their first film but feels it could be improved with more time and experience.
3. Over all I believe that the research helped me quite a bit as it sparked
different ideas in my head for what I wanted to do as I wasn’t sure exactly
what genre I wanted to go into. Also helped me understand my audience and
what they thought about it. I thought that some of the answers. When I did
my survey I made sure my questions helped me build up an idea of what my
audience were looking for because I found that most of my audience was
male I had to think of a way to make it appealing to men as well as women.
Because of this I looked at short horror films with the men in my class to see
what they found scary or not this was hard as they tried to deny what scared
them but overall they told me that jump scares were what made them scared
so it helped me determine what to do with my film and to add a jump scare. I
also asked age as if my audience was young I couldn’t have it too scary as
the rating for my film wouldn’t have been appropriate for who would want to
see it but lucky for me the majority who answered were older than 1 so i
knew if I wanted to I could make it extra scary, although I didn’t do it as an 18
rating t was nice to know I could have most of the questions I asked about
horrors were not particularly popular as they didn’t like them so this gave me
a challenged to make something that even people that don’t like horrors
would watch.
4. When I was doing my planning I found it really easy to come up
with a few different ideas for my mind map but then I struggled to
decide which one I wanted to do the most. After I did decide it
really helped me looking at images on google at different
positioning of cameras and colours and tones used in the images
from films. From looking at them I knew exactly the style I was
wanting. It helped me come up with the idea of the mirror and
taking the shot so you can see the person looking into the mirror
and there reflection. Been able to describe exactly why I picked
the images helped me find different reasons I liked the images
and also explore deeper into the picture more than I did when I
first got the image.
5. I believe that my time management was okay but I did struggle to
keep up with my written work as weather and personal
appointments made it hard to keep to schedule as it snowed a lot
over the period of the rotation so transport wasn’t always efficient
and reliable to get me into college lucky for me it only took me a
day to film so I knew I only had to make sure I was in college for
one day to get that done. The actual filming and editing of the film
I did quickly and well as I knew what I wanted so it was a quicker
prosses but with the writing which I struggle with I had to catch up
on as I didn’t get it done as quick as I wanted other than that I
believe I held up the work load well especially with the amount of
time I took out of college.
6. I had a lot of similarities to insidious and
candy man with the style of mood with the
coloring of the clips and that use of the
mirror like in candy man I think that my film
was quite individual and I actually
struggled to find a horror film similar to
mine as it’s a short film so there isn't really
a lot I could base of a film apart from the
mirror scene and the shadowing through
the window of the door. I don’t believe
there is actually quite many similarities to
work with apart from the mood of the
lighting and settings and colouring in the
background
7. I think that my short film had a lot of similarities to
two films, insidious and candy man some of the
similarities they have is definitely the dark
eerie mood to the film with dark music behind them
both they both use deep minor chords to enhance
the mood and because mine doesn’t have talking in
I had to make sure the music really told the story
and flowed with the story line because it’s a horror
you cant have fun upbeat music because it wouldn’t
work at all with the theme so I had to make sure the
music made you feel as uncomfortable as the short
film itself just like insidious did. The music also has
to fit with the build up just like in insidious when
something bad is about to happen like the women
connecting to the dead the music got really intense
8. One thing that I think I did well was the snaps between shots. When it
was moving from one scene to another I made it smooth but while
something intense was happening I wanted the camera to cut and
move quick so it keeps people focused when you know something bad
is going to happen you will realize in big films the snap the shots
quickly so when the shot moves quickly onto something else you
expect a shock building tension even if nothing happens it still makes
you jump as you expect something to happen on them shots. The
similarities to this and insidious is that insidious would move quickly
between shots and build the music up so you would think something
scary is about to come forward but sometimes it doesn’t and it is purely
to keep you hooked. I did this well with the light turning off and editing it
so that there is a different reflection in the mirror to what the actor was
doing this does build tension as when the light turns off and the music
builds you know something is going to happen.
9. I believe my work could look better but with the areas and lighting I had I believe I di
make a good enough looking film with the effects I used afterwards like the green tint
over the clips. I think the story line I chose was well thought out I knew what the
outcome would be and home to move the story along with the use of the editing and
camera work even without the sound or no talking you still understand what's
happening and the emotion they are expressing.
If I could improve anything it would be where I did it and the lighting I wanted to use I
would have made sure that the lighting was light enough that I could decide what the
darkness would be on the editing not have to just work with the shots I got even with
bad lighting, and I would have done the filming in a house or somewhere else other
than college as well so it could be better quality and not have to change things to
make it work with college. The only reason I did it I college was last time I tried
shooting a film people didn’t turn up or couldn’t make it to the area I wanted to film so
I thought it would be easier to do it at college where I knew they wouldn’t be there
and able to film with me.
10. I believe my film will appeal to my audience as its not too scary but
still has you on the edge of your seat to see what will happen as there
is no hint to what might happen it sort of takes you down this path on
thinking the shadow in the window is going to get her but switches to
the reflection in the mirror is maybe the one to kill her? This means
that people are not expecting the ending to be as it is and because it
just ends with her on the floor its leaves a cliff hanger to is she dead,
hurt or has the evil reflection taken over her body. This appeals to my
audience as 66.67% of the people who answered my questionnaire
said they like cliffhangers and this is there favorite part of the film. One
of the people who answered said that they don’t like bloody horror
films and prefer super natural which is another thing I have done that
my audience would like.
12. What did you like about the product?
My favourite part of the project was that it told a cohesive story that
matched the atmosphere it was generating. The chosen soundtrack
was very appropriate for the material presented, and the actors used
kept character throughout the project.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
I found that some scenes were unnecessary, and added little to the
overall product, such as the beginning. Similarly, at the end of the
project I thought that there was something missing in the final scenes,
leading the audience without an understandable resolution.
13. What did you like about the product?
I thought the split effect worked very well and the the film had a good
plot.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
Some of the shot were quite blurry so find the correct lighting and
balance would have worked better
14. What did you like about the product?
I liked the music as I felt it fitted the genre of film. I also liked the
editing of the mirror, I felt it was very effective and made the piece
come together. I also enjoyed the wide range of camera angles
throughout the film.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
Potentially more Foley sound effects to the piece.
15. What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I definitely agree with all the cons of the piece of work as its all
things I noticed myself so it was good that other people could give
me feed back on it because next time I will know what to do
differently. Also I agree with the pros of the piece as well as they
pointed out things I was proud of and hoped people would
noticed.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
Honestly I don’t really disagree with any of the negative feedback
as it was everything I thought and actually less than I noticed so
that’s maybe me being a perfectionist with it been my own work
and I definitely didn't’t disagree with any of the positive feedback.
16. Personally I wasn’t too happy with my work as it was rushed and I could have added
more or corrected a lot of the simple errors I made but for my first ever short film
with not sound I am quite proud as video isn't one of my strongest points. I do think
that my focus on the camera could have been adjusted better and the contrast on
the camera could have been put higher as I put it darker, I should have really done it
at a normal effect then added the darker effect over. This would have made it easier
for me to add a slight colour tint over the top of it. I also think that I could have
probably cut some of the scenes and concentrated more on the story line to make it
a little bit more spooky. I believe the way I did the scenes would have worked better
for a longer film so I could build it up a bit better as it seemed to tell a story that
wasn’t necessary but would have been if I had a longer period of time to film instead
of 1 minute. Over all though I am happy with my work especially the mirror work and
splitting the screen as I have never had the confidence to do something like that but
I really think it brought out another level of skill for me and now I will have more
confidence to try out other things in future work.
