SITE LOCATION
Sonargaon is now a township
about 27km to the south east of
Dhaka &53 km from Maynamoti.
The land is surrounded by two
important rivers meghna and
Brahmaputra.
A part of the city named Panam
Nagar came into prominence in
the later part of 19th an early
20th century. The place is
reputed to have been built over
the remains of an old city. It can
be said that Panam is the only
successor of the glorious
Sonargaon.

There are 56 buildings lined on ether
side of the central street running from
west to east with a north word curve.
Buildings were secular in nature,
predominantly residential houses as
opposed to religious structures that
characterized the architecture of the
early phase.
CHARACTERITICS
Buildings are of three types:
Central court yard type
Consolidate type
Central hall type
Plaster decoration
have been
extensively applied in
facade design.
Cast iron and broken
china locally known as
“chiniticri” were very
popular decoration
items.

Education about heritage
Need of conservation
Importnance in cultural & social context
Make the local people concerned as well as the authority.
Make them aware about the site & change the mentality
towards inviting tourists in their place, to see the place, to seel
the vocabulary of their region.
And make them work spontaneous towards the development.
DEVELOPMENT PHASE
PHASE 01:
Awareness of the authority
The government & the authority have to find out the
potentiality of the project & explore them.
- proper process of conservation
- development of the infrastructure
- development of the public facilities.
PHASE 02
Accessibility to the site.
The siteshould be smoothly accessible by
the people of inland and overseas.
PHASE -03
a) public toilet
b) Medical center
c) police box
d) complain box
e) information center
f) rest rooms
g) restaurants, food courts
h) parking
iv) Availability of transportation:
v) boating: Experience from the water
a) The experience of all the environment from outside.
b) The experience of the water transportation of Bengal-
(As water is the major mean of transportation.)
Phase- 04
i) Accommodation for the tourists.
ii) Attraction for the tourists-
a) the regional products of that region may get
emphasized.
Such as- Jamdani, clay items, other indigenous
materials.
b) Festivals
c) Traditional cultural activities-
jatra, kobi gan, shari gan,baich, folk dance
d) light and sound show
e) camping
iii) Facilities for the tourists-
i) Those who doesn’t have the capability to maintain the history
ii) of the buildings and cannot co-operation up with the environment
iii) of a tourist city should be transferred to another place.
iv) Those who are interested may stay in the site and can play a active role in the project.
Phase -05
Re-habilitations of the people who are living in the side-
Phase -06
i) The ground floor of all the houses are taken
over by the authority.
ii) The 1st floors of the houses in use may left
for the inhabitants.
Chapter -07
i) New use like shop house, museum, food court,
ii) restaurant cam be proposed in suitable houses.
iii) Different kind of activities can be added like- different type of museum like
- dance museum
- folk art museum
- pottery museum
- Art gallery
- Indigo museum
- cultural center
can be added.
People according to their own interest can choose the activity.
