1. Features need to be wound dressing
No single dressing is suitable for all types of wounds.
Often a number of different types of dressings will
be used during the healing process of a single
wound. Dressings should perform one or more of
the following functions:
2. Provide moist environment
Absorb exudate without leaking to surface of the dressing
Provide mechanical protection
Keep ideal temperature
Provide bacterial protection
Allow gaseous and fluid exchange
Absorb wound odour
Be non-adherent to the wound and easily removed without trauma
Provide some debridement action (remove dead tissue and/or foreign
particles)
Be non-toxic, non-allergenic and non-sensitising (to both patient and medical
staff)
Sterile
4. Gauze Dressings can stick to the wound surface
and disrupt the wound bed when
removed
Only use on minor wounds or as secondary
dressings
5. Paraffin dressing
Dressing does not stick to wound surface low adherence
Suitable for flat, shallow wound
Allow free passage of viscous exudate to 2ry dress
Useful in patient with sensitive skin E.g. Jelonet®,
6. Semipermeable film
• Sterile sheet of polyurethane coated with acrylic adhesive
• Transparent film dressing allowing wound checks
• Water proof but exchange oxygen
and water for cellular breathing
• Barrier protection against bacteria
• Reduce risk of moisture build up
and change dressing
• E.g. OpSite®
7. • AsGUARD® Clear Film Dressing and Roll is a transparent
• adhesive polyurethane film with high moisture vapour permeability
which
• • adheres to the skin
• forms a flexible, comfortable layer
• is a water resistant barrier
• allows skin to breath
• assists in the healing processw
8. Hydrocolloids
• Composed of carboxymethylcellulose, gelatin, pectin, elastomers and
adhesives that turn into a gel when exudate is absorbed. This creates a
warm, moist environment that promotes debridement and healing
• Help to separate slough and autolysis of dead tissues
• Protect bacterial contamination
• Use in burn, moderately exudative wounds , downer sites , pressure
wounds
• E.g. DuoDERM®,
9. Hydrogels
• Composed mainly of water in a complex network or fibres that keep the
polymer gel intact. Water is released to keep the wound moist
• Used for necrotic or sloughy wound beds to rehydrate and remove dead
tissue. Do not use for moderate to heavily exudating wounds
• E.g. Tegagel®
10. Alginates Composed of calcium alginate (a seaweed component). When in contact
with wound, calcium in the dressing is exchanged with sodium from wound fluid and t
into a gel that maintains a moist wound environment
Good for exudating wounds and helps in debridement of sloughing wounds
Do not use on low exudating wounds as this will cause dryness and scabbing
Dressing should be changed daily
Good for heamastasis , diabetic ulcer, pressure ulcer , post surgical ,
lacerations
E.g. Kaltostat®
11. Foam
dress
Meplilex border
Mepilex®
Border Sacrum is an all-in-one foam dressing proven to minimise patient pain
and trauma to the wound and surrounding skin. It has three main design features: to fit the anatom
prevent pressure damage, and to create an optimal healing environment
for moderate to high exuding pressure injuries, or other wounds in the sacral area such as surgica
cyst
12. silver coated antimicrobial dressing
ACTICOATs is a range of flexible,
absorbent and conformable wound dressings that utilses the antimic
silver to provide an efficient and effective barrier to bacterial penetrat
Kaltostat ca sodium higinate wound dressing silver coated antimicrob
13. Low adherence
• Post-op dressing for management of sutured wounds
• Can be used as secondary dressing over gens, ointments, and other primary
dressings
• Highly absorbent and low-adherent pad
• Low allergy adhesive provides secure fixation
• Soft and conformable for patient comfort
14. • Cuticerin is particularly suitable at wound sites where frequent
dressing changes are needed and when changed regularly, is suitable
for long-term use, from a few days to several weeks, as appropriate. *
Cuticerin's defined mesh size reduces the risk of granulation tissue
growing through the dressing, allowing it to be easily removed,
minimising pain at dressing changes.
• Cuticerin is an impregnated dressing made of a smooth acetate fabric,
with a defined mesh size, coated with a water repellent ointment
containing petrolatum, paraffin and Eucerite.
15. Hydro
cellular
dressing
Low allergy adhesive
Tapered construction with micro-thin edges
Unique trilaminate structure
Perforated wound contact layer
Highly absorbent central hydrocellular layer
Waterproof/bacteria-proof outer film layer
Available in 10/Box
The unique wound contact layer of Allevyn Ag adhesive hydrocellular dressings is
adhere to intact skin, but not to wounds reducing the risk of skin irritation. Combin
absorbent foam and a breathable outer surface, this dressing more readily contro
and promotes a healthier healing environment.
17. latex-free, hypoallergenic plastic tape
3M Transpore Surgical Grade Medical Tape is a latex-free, hypoallergenic
plastic tape that is gentle to the skin yet adheres well and leaves
minimal adhesive residue upon removal. A transparent, general
purpose, porous and breathable surgical tape.
