DEFINITION drugs which increase the activity of various subunits or parts of central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) So it reduces narcosis brought about by excess of depressant drugs. “The drugs which increase the activity of various subunits or parts of central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) are called Analeptics or CNS stimulants. It is soluble in solution of alkali hydroxide. Storage: It should be stored in well closed container at a cool place away from direct sunlight.
  16. 16. THEOPHYLLINE ©Mr. Pankaj Kusum Ramdas Khuspe Uses: 1. It is used as analeptics or CNS stimulant. 2. It has also diuretic action (more than caffeine). 3. It is a potent bronchodilator hence, it is used a) to control acute and chronic asthma b) to treat chronic obstructive lung diseases c) to control acute broncho spasm. 4. It is used as a respiratory stimulant in neonatal apnoea (cessation breathing). 5. It is also cardiac stimulant and is used to treat left ventricular fade': Theophylline (or Aminophylline) suppositories are preferred to tablet for-because (i) orally it may cause gastric Irritation, nausea and vomitting. (ii) it is more readily absorbed rectally.
