Data Scientist

  1. 1. Data Scientist The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century
  2. 2. What is Data Science? Data science, also known as data-driven science, is an interdisciplinary field of scientific methods, processes, and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, either structured or unstructured, similar to data mining.
  3. 3. Why Data Science? Data science is a multidisciplinary blend of data inference, algorithm development, and technology in order to solve analytically complex problems. All the core is Data. Data science is a blend of skills in three major areas: ➔ Mathematics Expertise ➔ Technology; Hacking Skills ➔ Business/Strategy Acumen
  4. 4. Now Comes the Question Who are Data Scientists?
  5. 5. Data scientists are a new breed of analytical data expert who have the technical skills to solve complex problems – and the curiosity to explore what problems need to be solved. They’re part mathematician, part computer scientist and part trend- spotter. And, because they straddle both the business and IT worlds, they’re highly sought-after and well-paid. Who wouldn’t want to be one?
  6. 6. If “Sexy” means havng rare qualities that are much in demand, Data Scientist are already there. As they are Difficult and Expensive to Hire.
  7. 7. Meet Krik. Dr. Kirk Borne is the Principal Data Scientist and Executive Advisor at Booz Allen Hamilton (since 2015). He previously spent 12 years as Professor of Astrophysics and Computational Science at George Mason University where he taught and advised students in the Data Science degree programs. Before that, he worked 18 years supporting NASA projects in various roles, including Data Archive Project Scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope. He has a PhD in Astronomy from Caltech and a BS in Physics from LSU.Dr. Kirk Borne is the Principal Data Scientist and Executive Advisor at Booz Allen Hamilton (since 2015). 8. 8. Famous Quotes: ➔ Torture the data, and it will confess to anything. ➔ You can have data without information, but you cannot have information without data.. ➔ Data is the sword of the 21st century, those who wield it the samurai. ➔ Data is the new oil? No: Data is the new soil. ➔ Data matures like wine, applications like fish.
  9. 9. Insights From The Article: Communicating and collaborating with both IT and business. Data Scientists are Big Data Wranglers. Data Scientists help decision makers shift from ad hoc analysis to an ongoing conversation with data.
  10. 10. Where did they come from? Many data scientists began their careers as statisticians or data analysts. But as big data (and big data storage and processing technologies such as Hadoop) began to grow and evolve, those roles evolved as well. Data is no longer just an afterthought for IT to handle. It’s key information that requires analysis, creative curiosity and a knack for translating high-tech ideas into new ways to turn a profit.
  11. 11. Why and How are these insights relevant to a Managers in India ?
  12. 12. Here are instances when a company can benefit from having a Data Scientist: ➔ When there is a need to crunch large volumes of numbers ➔ When they can benefit from social media streams, credit data, consumer research or third-party data sets ➔ When possessing lots of operational and customer data
  13. 13. The Challenge for Managers is to learn and how to IDENTIFY the TALENT of Data Scientists, attract it to an ENTERPRISE or ORGANIZATION to make it more PRODUCTIVE. Source: challenge.reference
  14. 14. Conclusion Data science can definitely add value to business by the addition of statistics and insights across workflow, be it hiring new candidates to helping senior staff make better and informed decisions. Data science can add value across all industries.
  15. 15. Presented By Prince Barai Data Analytics Intern at IIM, Lucknow
