  1. Thanks to Dr. Eysenbach and the planning committee for giving me the chance to address you. Today, Asklepios is officially just over two weeks old so this is an exciting time Apologize to those of you who are familiar with my organization but feel it is important to provide a context for those not familiar with the Canadian Medical Association
  2. Represents about 68% of all Canadian physicians and about 80% of practicing physicians
  3. Based on how we work as an organization and what we wanted to do, we came up with a number of important principles for developing a social networking site. Authentication important – already in place for our cma.ca portal so able to make use of this Decided that we wanted people to identify themselves. Concerns about the Patriot Act in the U.S. and potential access to personal data meant it should be hosted in Canada Most importantly – CMA would take a hands off approach. Not control the discussions or groups online but just provide the platform
  4. Decided that of all the Web 2.0 tools available – wikkis, blogs etc. that social networking is where we could bring most benefit to members. Worked throughout the winter and spring to develop a proposal and plan Established pilot site on ning. Tested with senior staff and then closed to staff and worked with volunteer physicians to improve functionality. Worked with web company in Montreal (Plank) to build the site. Unveiled at our annual meeting last month
  5. This is Asklepios. Named after the Greek god of medicine and evidently this is the most acceptable spelling. Doctors login through their cma.ca log-in, then create a profile, and can then communicate in whatever means they choose.
