A SIGNATURE TREE FOR TREES
Today evening after a short summer rain brought the heat down a bit, the TREE WALK-Tvm organized its campaign "Trivandrum, do we need Trees?" with the special event A Signature Tree for Trees in front of the Secretariat gate. The 5 Ficus trees standing there which have been planted by the Taxi stand drivers, providing shade and coolness for many years is under threat for road widening.Anyone who has passed this way once would know how absurd the road widening in this area could be!
The signature campaign started with 13 year old Madhav signing on the white cloth which was tied around one of the huge Ficus trees there. The rest of the group also joined soon. The Tree walk volunteers spoke to the public, distributed notices and urged them to sign for the trees. There was a range of people from students, officers, teachers, women vendors and elderly people who showed willingness to sign and expressed their concern about trees being removed so indiscriminately. There were also people from other parts of the country like Bombay and TamilNadu who joined the campaign.
The highlight of the program were the songs that the M.B.S.Youth Choir functioning in the city for 25 years sang in support of the movement. This attracted the attention of the passersby. The process of signing was accompanied by active discussions on how more trees could be planted, how to plan city development without removing green cover and so on.
The campaign could collect 300 signatures both on the cloth and on paper. The Oppumaram or Signature Tree would move to other parts of the city where trees are under threat and mobilize public opinion. Without VIPs, without speeches and loud slogans, the campaign was able to touch the heart and thoughts of many.
