2. Classic Tudor Residence Bala-Cynwyd, Pennsylvania Small Low voltage in-ground lighting markers along the driveway, and custom fabricated posts lights were used to provide this understated effect.

Classic Tudor Residence Bala-Cynwyd, Pennsylvania Subsequent to making modifications which re-configured the vehicular approach into a crescent shape driveway, an opportunity was then created to define the entrance to the exterior façade of the early 20 th century Tudor home and to define the entrance of the property. Low voltage MR11 fixtures were strategically placed or hidden behind the eves of the roof line to cast an even but soft illumination across the wood and stucco detail of the bays.

Custom shaker Japanese-style residence Medford Lakes, NJ Uniquely situated on a lakefront property, this custom built home was constructed using cedar as its primary building material for exterior walls and roof. The Japanese influence is visible throughout the interior with such architectural elements as rough hewn support beams, river rock pediments, custom cherry floor planking, lap pool, high peak paneled ceilings and 360 degree window view of it’s natural setting. My lighting choices were simple and carry forward the Japanese atmosphere of this beautiful home.

7. Private Entertainment Space Center City, Philadelphia A very challenging project: to illuminate the 2400 square foot interior of this private men’s club built sub-level under a 4 unit condominium. The absence of natural light throughout this space and the client’s choice for wine red walls and navy ceiling impacted the fixture selection to overcome the light absorption factor. This club was built with a large swimming pool, sauna, and a massage room surrounded by luxuriously designed appointments of imported granite, limestone and slate, leather banquettes, a rustic fireplace and six wide screen televisions. All activity areas flowed well on two half levels.

Architectural Adaptation and Enhancement How do you find harmony between the industrial façade of a three-story Center city townhouse and a client’s commission for six window boxes which will achieve balance of design as well as a visual upgrade to the exterior of the residence? A stylized design element taken from the wrought iron and glass door canopy became the signature for these boxes. This pattern was repeated on the three visible sides of the box and a design of tangent small circles of two diameters was integrated for the bottom panel.

Aesthetic Solutions to Architectural Challenges To provide a security light source above the beveled glass front-entrance canopy, a low voltage interior fixture housing was modified to mount onto the black iron frame. A 20MR16 was filtered with an adjustable louver trim accessory. The end result was a subtle but effective illumination of the from door and sandstone threshold.

Rittenhouse Square townhouse Philadelphia, Pa A previous lighting challenge for Illumina, Ltd. this particular client’s home recently underwent an entire facelift, adding three elements: a new kitchen, master bedroom, and 1 st floor powder room in the round to the existing floor layout. The modern kitchen accented by earth toned paint, cabinetry, and granite was lit in the following ways: a circular monorail over the breakfast counter, picture light fixtures on monorail over the sink, and square configured recessed trims in the ceiling. This low profile monorail, cable, troth, and recessed lighting brought the entire project to an elegant conclusion.

16. Rittenhouse Square townhouse Philadelphia, Pa The extraordinary Master Bathroom, complete with neutral marble walls, a frameless glass shower enclosure, a frosted glass paneled ceiling were lit by a dual stainless cable system which runs the full length of this room.

18. Large Chateau style suburban home Delaware County, PA Kitchen/breakfast room renovations to a circa 1980’s style living area. These clients were totally flexible to permit the creation of a single/work dining area previously two separate rooms. Using custom mahogany/laurel burl veneer cabinets, warm rosy earth toned granite counters, industrial quality stainless steel appliances displayed on a 20x20 porcelain tile floor with mosaic bands of tile which created an exciting new work addition to this home. Bands of matte silver monorail placed along the wall cabinet soffitry provides a picture light view into the contents behind each door.

20. Spacious single floor condominium unit Philadelphia, PA A 1,300 sq-living/dining den configured on a 90 degree axis with both ceiling heights restricted by low soffits. My clients have a second winter home, and decorated this residence with a mixture of modern art in a medium of ceramic, glass and watercolor. The only sources of illumination were from table lamps and floor fixtures. There they chose a free form lighting monorail to accent each of the living areas.

The interior living space has an abundance of natural light, but this particular room which the client designated as their “cocktail lounge” also doubled as a quiet room for reading which was illuminated only by a ceiling fan with an incandescent light. Therefore, its use after dark was impractical and required a solution that would be creative yet simple. I recommended a low profile monorail system with a nearly rectangular configuration, suspended by stainless cable to create an open linear network of rails. All four corners of this lighting element have 40 degree eased radii to correspond with the design of the curved barrel chairs. Contemporary Ranch Style Home in WALLINGFORD, PA

Contemporary Ranch Style Home in WALLINGFORD, PA The small contemporary low voltage track head fixtures are carefully focused behind each chair, across the small glass topped coffee table to allow for both entertainment and reading. The art work in this space is both uncovered acrylics and watercolor pieces that are lighted by delicate and telescopic fixtures which highlight them and their importance to the overall furnishings of this room.

29. Luxury condominium unit at Academy House Philadelphia, PA A 1,000 square-foot living room with an 8-foot ceiling height restriction had virtually no ceiling or wall illumination. The clients are collectors of distinctive, antique Oriental art and furnishings. Their collection and their two large grand pianos required a unique lighting solution.

High end condominium structure Pine Street; Philadelphia, PA As a design consultant and procurer of finished materials, I collaborated with the owners to select natural stone, porcelain tiles, bath fixtures, accessories, kitchen and bath cabinetry and other architectural details for three of seven units. Prepared a comprehensive lighting plan for the units and supervised the installation of all fixtures and switching devices.

35. Residence on Mulberry Lane Haverford, PA Designed and supervised the installation of an exterior low-voltage lighting plan for approximately 20 landscaped acres. Employed various techniques of accent, moonlight, recessed and silhouette lighting. The control network was integrated with a central multilevel dimming panel interfaced with an astronomic clock. Prepared and supervised the installation of an extensive plan for a low-voltage lighting system for four interior living spaces averaging 900 square feet. All pre-existing fixtures had to be removed and new placement recalculated to accommodate structural members. Custom lighting solutions were fabricated for windows, glass bookshelves, under-counter illumination and art work.

36. Jewelry designer Florence, Italy Created and designed a collection of unisex 18kt. gold and nautical stainless steel cable jewelry; bracelets, rigid necklaces, and rings. It was a limited edition of unique pieces marketed in Europe.

38. Union League of Philadelphia Designed an exterior lighting scheme to accent the architectural detail and elevations of this historic building on Broad Street. Plan implementation commenced and will be completed in 2007.

40. Residence on Boothe Lane Haverford, PA Designed and supervised the installation of a low-voltage lighting scheme for a sunken garden surrounded by eight-foot decorative brick walls.

41. Residence on Boothe Lane Haverford, PA Recessed underwater fixtures were installed in concrete caissons of varying height to illuminate the bronze and copper hydraulic fountain sculpture in a reflecting pool on the lower terrace.

Fire restoration of Frank Furness home Philadelphia, PA Administered and coordinated the authentic historic restoration of an 1852 circa Frank Furness townhouse subsequent to extensive fire damage. The residence received the Philadelphia Historic Commission plaque #869 in August 1995 and was then registered by the National Historic Commission in the same year.

46. Optimizing Interior Space and Design The original access to this townhouse roof was through a 30-inch cube-shaped hatch in copper. A 10-foot wooden ladder was suspended on a rope pulley to reach the hatch door. The roof opening was enlarged to improve deck access from the interior. To increase the volume of light into the guest bedroom below, a 70-inch x 36-inch electric flat skylight was fabricated, which retracted under the cedar deck planking. Skylights of this size are normally non-operative and mounted at a slight pitch on the roof.

48. Optimizing Interior Space and Design The client wanted to integrate his master bedroom/bath into one open space. The placement of the vanity unit and toilet were predetermined by existing plumbing constraints, but the design and execution of a deck-mounted tub was opened to creativity. A 7-foot whirlpool tub was built into a contemporary shaped marble slab decking surrounded on the outside walls by 12-inchx 12 inch marble tiles. An accessible storage soffit was built above the tub with a 6 foot x 3 foot illuminated leaded glass panel. A smoked silver Mylar laminate was applied to the underneath surface of the soffit to increase reflective light. A single tube fluorescent channel was recessed flush with this ceiling, which was defused by modifying a satin aluminum air vent channel. Now the unattractive light source is hidden, but the decorative trim provides defused light into the tub area.

Given the pitfalls of hidden structural issues in older homes, re-evaluation, modification, and creative ingenuity was often required to solve problems.
