The discussion sparkled with enthusiasm and a dazzling idea soon followed.
Inspired by the best selling book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by
Sheryl Sandberg, today’s event seeks to localize a national discussion.
Today, you will hear from an accomplished group of women serving as
extraordinary local community leaders. They have come together to share their
stories, and encourage you to actively engage in leadership. This afternoon,
you will become part of a conversation designed to facilitate an authentic
understanding of the successes, challenges, and defining moment’s women face
when they lean in to leadership.
Our goal is to inspire and empower you, as you work to become the next
generation of Jacksonville’s extraordinary women who lead.

4. Dr. Frances Bartlett Kinne
Dr. Frances Bartlett Kinne’s more than half-century of service and
leadership at Jacksonville University has changed lives and the course of
higher education in Northeast Florida and beyond.
Dr. Kinne began her Jacksonville University career in 1958 as a
humanities professor, was selected as founding dean of JU’s College of
Fine Arts in 1961 and served in that capacity until being named JU’s
president in 1979, becoming the first female president of a college or university in Florida. With
Kinne as president, JU established what is now the Davis College of Business, the School of
Nursing and the Aviation program.
Dr. Kinne was JU’s president for 10 years and chancellor from 1989 to 1994, and has served as
chancellor emeritus since 1994.
In addition to her leadership, Dr. Kinne’s hand of generosity is legendary: JU’s student center
(Frances Bartlett Kinne University Center) bears the Kinne name due to her charitable endeavors,
as do the Frances Bartlett Kinne Auditorium at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, the North Wing of
the Bertha Bartlett Public Library, Kinne Garden at Wilma’s Little People School at Jacksonville
University and Frances Bartlett Kinne Alumni & Development Center at Drake University.
On Nov. 1, 2012, Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown, a 1985 and 1989 JU alumnus, honored Dr.
Kinne with a “Dr. Frances Bartlett Kinne Day” proclamation, which reads in part: “Dr. Fran
Kinne is one of our city’s most distinguished citizens and has contributed to Jacksonville in
countless ways.” In addition, she was the first subject for the Emmy Award-winning “Jacksonville
Legacy Series” on public television, documenting the region’s most prominent leaders.
Dr. Kinne is an Iowa native and graduate of Drake University with degrees in music education
and a doctorate from the University of Frankfurt in Germany.
Stephanie Cost
Stephanie Cost serves as the Presidential Spouse to Tim Cost, Jacksonville University’s 12th President. Prior to moving to Jacksonville
last year, Mrs. Cost was a business owner, volunteer and philanthropic leader in Philadelphia. She served as a Board member and
active contributor to Wings for Success, which provides professional
clothing and life-skills workshops to assist disadvantaged women
re-entering the workforce. Additionally, she founded and chaired
her own philanthropic women’s group, Caritas, in West Chester, PA. Caritas donated and
sponsored fundraising events for local grassroots organizations, primarily those needing
formal development support.
Mrs. Cost also created her own interior design business, which she led for nearly a decade.
Her previous professional experience includes St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, Carrier
Corporation and Eastman Kodak Company, primarily in purchasing and market research
positions. She graduated summa cum laude from Immaculata University (PA) with a BA
in Economics. The Costs have two children: Melanie, Manager of Media and Financial
Communications at CSX Corporation headquarters here in Jacksonville, and Drew, a former
professional soccer player now employed with the Gatorade division of PepsiCo, living in
Rochester, NY.

5. PANELISTS BIOS
Kim Anspach Ward
Chairman, One Love Foundation National Advisory Counsel
Kim Anspach Ward was named Chairman of the One Love Foundation
National Advisory Counsel in July 2012. As Chairman, she guides
the counsel members and the development of foundation programs.
Anspach Ward also plays a pivotal role in One Love Foundation
fundraising initiatives, forming strategic alliances, and growing the
advisory counsel with community leaders across the United States.
Anspach Ward spent 15 years in Sales and Marketing for two Fortune 500 companies based
in Philadelphia and Baltimore. She currently serves as a Trustee and the Managing Director
of the Michael and Kim Ward Foundation, which provided a grant to the One Love
Foundation to help launch a national education campaign to combat Relationship Violence.
In addition to her work with the Michael and Kim Ward Foundation, she is also the Board Chair
of City Year Jacksonville (Fla.), is on the Board of the Jacksonville (Fla.) Humane Society, is
the co-chair of the United Way of Northeast Florida’s Education Committee and remains very
supportive of her national sorority, Delta Zeta. Anspach Ward received her BA in Economics
from Temple University and an MBA in International Business from Temple University.
Mrs. Fatema (Laya) Bayat
Executive Director - Bayat Foundation / Senior Vice President,
Ariana Television & Radio
In her role with the Bayat Foundation and Ariana Television, Afghanistan’s
largest private broadcast network, Mrs. Bayat has spent more than a decade
championing the empowerment of Afghan women and promoting the
importance of cultural diversity through entrepreneurship, girls’ education,
balanced media content, maternal health care, and rule of law initiatives.
Under her leadership, the Foundation has completed more than 200 projects throughout
Afghanistan since 2007 focused on nourishing people and communities, restoring livelihoods,
building resilience, and supporting the delivery of basic services for the most vulnerable. Notable
accomplishments include the construction of twelve maternal & early childhood hospitals that
have served more than 800,000 at-risk Afghans to date; the provision of significant support to
American University of Afghanistan and distribution of thousands of tons of emergency food
relief to needy Afghan families.
She is a member of the U.S. Afghan Women’s Council (USAWC) and frequent speaker on issues
of women’s leadership and diversity in Afghanistan emphasizing the crucial leadership role that
Afghan woman must play in the future of Afghanistan. Mrs. Bayat holds a bachelor’s degree
in English Literature & Education as well as a master’s degree in Special Education. She visits
Afghanistan often in order to leverage her formal education and teaching experience to help
establish, support, and activate educational and health care opportunities for widows, women,
and youth of Afghanistan.

6. Angela Corey
State Attorney, Fourth Judicial Circuit of Florida
Angela Corey is a native of Jacksonville and a second-generation
Floridian. Corey received a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing
from Florida State University in 1976, and her Juris Doctor from the
University of Florida, College of Law in 1979.
In August of 2008, she was elected to serve as the State Attorney of
the 4th Judicial Circuit of Florida. Corey has tried numerous homicides since her election. In
addition to her distinguished career trial work, Corey has devoted an equal amount of time to
training police and prosecutors on local, state and national levels. Since 1982, Corey has taught
classes for the Police Academy at Florida State College at Jacksonville.
Corey is an active member of the Republican Party of Duval County and the Republican
Women’s Club of Duval Federated. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees at
Episcopal High School of Jacksonville; the Northeast Florida Builders Care Association of
Jacksonville; as well as the Military, Public Safety & Security Advisory Board for Florida
State College at Jacksonville.
Corey is very active in her church, St. Johns Episcopal Cathedral. From 1990 to 2012, she
participated almost every Sunday in Children’s Chapel, where she loved to help teach children
from ages five to ten.
Crystal Freed
Attorney
Crystal Freed uses her skill as an attorney to advocate on behalf of
victims of human trafficking and to organize grass-roots efforts to
raise awareness.
Since 2007, Freed has devoted all of her professional time to this
issue. While serving as the co-Chair of the Northeast Florida Human
Trafficking Task Force, she organized Jacksonville’s first city-wide human trafficking awareness
speaking tour featuring Dr. Laura Lederer, a former Sr. Advisor on Trafficking in Persons in the
U.S. Department of State.
She frequently speaks on the issue of human trafficking and has also planned and organized
legal education seminars for attorneys focused on not only representing child victims of human
trafficking, but also adult victims as well. In 2012, Freed was appointed to the Jacksonville
Human Rights Commission where she serves on its Community Relations Committee. She
also serves as the co-Chair of the Jacksonville Bar Association’s Human Rights Section. In 2013,
Freed decided to use the arts as a platform to educate the public on modern-day slavery. That led
her, in October of that year, to Artworks for Freedom. She is the organizing partner of Artworks
for Freedom’s North America launch in Florida.

7. Nancy Hogshead-Makar
Attorney/Senior Director of Advocacy, Women’s Sports Foundation
A life-long advocate for access and equality in athletics, internationally
recognized legal expert on sports issues, scholar and author Nancy
Hogshead-Makar is one of the foremost exponents for gender equity.
Hogshead-Makar capped eight years as a world class swimmer at the
1984 Olympics, where she won three Gold medals and one Silver
medal. Nancy has been inducted into eleven halls of fame, including
the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame.
Hogshead-Makar has testified in Congress numerous times on the topic of gender equity in
athletics, written numerous scholarly and lay articles, and has been a frequent guest on national
news programs on the topic, including 60 Minutes, Fox News, CNN, ESPN, NPR, MSNBC and
network morning news programming. Since 2003 she has been the Co-Chair of American Bar
Association Committee on the Rights of Women. Sports Illustrated Magazine listed her as one
of the most influential people in the history of Title IX.
Hogshead-Makar earned her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and practiced
law at the law firm of Holland & Knight, in both their litigation and public law departments.
She and her husband Scott Makar, a judge on Florida’s First District Court of Appeal, have a
son and twin daughters.
The Honorable Mia L. Jones
State Representative, District 14
A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Representative Mia L. Jones was reelected to represent District 14 on November 4, 2012, for her third term
in the Florida House of Representatives.
Representative Jones has worked diligently to ensure that all Floridans
have access to quality Affordable Health Care. Since being elected,
Representative Jones has remained true to her platform of Promoting Economic Development
in underserved communities, Partnering in Education to ensure that all students receive a quality
education, Promoting long-term solutions to Infrastructure and Health Care Disparities, and
ultimately working to improve the quality of life for the citizens she represents.
Married to George C. Davis, she is the youngest of three children born to Lawrence and Hannah
Jones. Representative Jones holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and an MBA
in Human Resource Management from Florida A & M University (FAMU). She is an active
member of Bethel Baptist Institutional Church, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a National
Life Member of FAMU Alumni Association and ultimately a Community Trustee.

8. Ambassador Marilyn McAfee
Ambassador Marilyn McAfee (Ret) served as a career foreign service
officer for 31 years, receiving the Presidential Meritorious Award, the
Superior Honor Award and the Distinguished Honor Award. Since
retiring, she has participated in World Affairs Councils of America
special delegation visits to Morocco, Egypt and Jordan. In January 2009
she went to Baghdad at the invitation of Ambassador Ryan Crocker to
meet with Iraqi officials and help launch the new U.S. – Iraq relationship.
Ambassador McAfee received her B.A. in history cum laude at the University of Pennsylvania
and her Masters degree at The Johns Hopkins University.
Since retiring from diplomatic service, Ambassador McAfee served as President of the World
Affairs Council of Jacksonville six years and currently serves as Chair of the Council’s Advisory
Board. She has also served on the National Board of the World Affairs Councils of America.
McAfee is a member of the University of North Florida Foundation Board, the Community
Hospice Board and for 12 years Board Member, Baptist Medical Center Beaches. In 2005
Ambassador McAfee was awarded the Florida Times-Union’s Eve Award for Outstanding
Volunteer Service. Her home is in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Lisa Rinaman
Lisa Rinaman, our St. Johns Riverkeeper, is the chief advocate and
public’s voice for the St. Johns River. Her responsibilities include:
holding regulatory agencies and those polluting the river accountable;
identifying and advocating for solutions that will protect and restore
the river; working with government entities, businesses, community
leaders and citizens to resolve problems that impact the river’s health;
and communicating with the media and the public to educate and raise
awareness about important river-related issues.
As a former senior staff member for Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton, Lisa Rinaman has extensive
experience building consensus around issues and helped implement numerous environmental initiatives and policies. Lisa was instrumental in leading the effort to develop and implement irrigation, fertilizer and Florida Friendly landscaping ordinances to better protect the St. Johns and local
waterways. She also played a key role in securing state funding for water quality improvements,
organizing the city’s successful Manatee Protection Plan, and pushing for programs necessary to
fulfill the River Accord restoration plan for the Lower St. Johns River.
Before being named the St. Johns Riverkeeper, Lisa served as a valuable member of the St. Johns
Riverkeeper Water Policy Group (WPG), a group that advocates for water conservation and
reuse and policies that are more protective of our water resources.

9. PLANNING COMMITTEE
Carole C. Barnett, Ph.D.
Carole Barnett has been a Professor of Interdisciplinary Humanities
at Jacksonville University since 1998, leaving a successful corporate
career to pursue her love of teaching and working with students. She
received her Masters and Doctorate in Interdisciplinary Humanities
at Florida State University. She is active in campus and community
initiatives and has been recognized for her University and Community Service. Barnett is a previous recipient of the JU Community
Service Award and JU Service Award and a member and former officer of Phi Kappa Phi
Honor Society.
Her lifelong passion for travel took her to the Middle East for her sabbatical in United Arab
Emirates, and she has since worked to build cultural bridges promoting understanding and
cultural appreciation through study abroad with students and serving as faculty advisor for
the Cultural Diversity Club on campus.
She remains active with community service and outreach programs and served on the
Boards of the World Affairs Council, First Coast Scholars Board and the Schultz Center
for Teaching and Learning. She served as a mentor and seminar leader for Duval County
teachers in the First Coast Scholars Program and is active in the Jacksonville Panhellenic
Association, a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority Alumna Association and Ronald
McDonald House Charities, to mention a few.
Kristie S. Gover
Kristie S. Gover is the Chief Student Affairs Officer at Jacksonville
University. She has served in her current role for one year and
previously served as the Assistant Dean of Students for nine years and
Director of Residential Life at Jacksonville University for two years.
Prior to her career at Jacksonville University, Dr. Gover worked in
Housing and Residence Life at the University of South Carolina as a
Residence Life Coordinator. She completed her bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s
degree in higher education administration at the University of Louisville and doctorate in
educational leadership at the University of North Florida. Gover has been married to her
college sweetheart, Rob, for almost thirteen years and has two children, Addie (5) and
Smyth (8).

10. Dr. Annmarie Kent-Willette
Dr. Annmarie Kent-Willette, a Jacksonville University award-winning
educator and communications expert is currently on loan to the City of
Jacksonville, serving as the Education Commissioner reporting directly
to Mayor Brown as his senior policy advisor for all matters pertaining
to education.
Widely honored for her work in education and community service,
Kent-Willette is the 2008 Jacksonville University Woman of the Year, a three-time First Coast
Scholar seminar leader, and the recipient of numerous honors for her community and university
service including the JU Community Service Award.
She joined Jacksonville University in 2001 as a professor of Communications. A former
television journalist, Kent-Willette teaches a variety of communications and service-learning
classes both domestically and internationally. In addition to her work in the classroom, she is a
senior level, media and communications expert providing extensive executive and on-air public
speaking training and managing strategic communications and community partnerships for
corporate and nonprofit organizations.
Kent-Willette completed her B.A. and M.A. in Communications at the University of South
Florida in Tampa and her doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of North
Florida in Jacksonville.
Actively engaged in her community, Kent-Willette serves on a variety of boards, including the
Florida Associated Press Broadcasters, the Jacksonville Children’s Commission, the Community
Arts Team, the School Wellness Planning Committee, the Center for Urban Education and
Policy, the JAX Chamber of Commerce Education and Workforce Development Committee,
and the National League of Cities Mayors’ Education Policy Advisors Network.
Sherri L. Jackson
Dr. Sherri L. Jackson, professor of psychology, has served JU with
distinction since September 1988 in our Social Sciences Division.
Jackson’s academic career reflects a l ifetime o f o utstanding a ccomplishments. In 2004, Jackson was named JU Professor of the Year,
and in 2005, was honored as University Woman of the Year. Additionally, she won the University Award for Excellence in Scholarship
and Professional Activity in 2003, the University Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2009, and was an EVE finalist in the Education category in 2013.
She received her M.S. and Ph.D. in cognitive/experimental psychology from the University
of Florida. She is the author of four textbooks on Research Methods and Statistics with
Cengage Learning.
