Many experts believed driving was too complex to be automated, yet here we are with self driving taxis, cars, and trucks. The robots are coming for drivers - and they are coming for you too. No matter what your job, a robot WILL do it. They will be stronger, faster, and smarter than you. They will be better writers, better doctors, and run companies more effectively. We can delay the inevitable by shutting down borders and subsidizing losing industries, but we will not stop robots from replacing human labor (nor should we). The challenge is in the transition from a human labor to the robot run economy. Many people will struggle to find new places for their skills, and the result could be increased income inequality, increased violence, and an uprooted sense of self. In this talk, we’ll explore our responsibility as technologists to be aware of and address this inevitable transition to a robot labor force.

Presented on April 18, 2013 for Technology On Your Own Terms faculty/staff advancement series, The University of Scranton, Scranton, PA Description: Like. Share. +1. Subscribe. Unsubscribe. These are just some of the actions we perform on the Web as we interact with information. Generally speaking, we do these things to make sense of the vast amount of information available to us. What is less widely known is that the information we see on the Web is shaped by more than just these deliberate actions we take. For instance, your search engine may know in what country you are located, and it may use this information to deliver search results it deems relevant to your interests based on this information. This process is called Web personalization. In this presentation, attendees will receive a basic overview of Web personalization, how it is different from customization, and the role it plays in determining what information we encounter on the Web. Common examples of how we participate in Web personalization (knowingly and unknowingly) will be demonstrated, and critiques of this technology will be presented.

A Gamification Framework Applied to Kiva.org. This thesis treats the exploitation of gamification to engage and coordinate users on philanthropic crowdfunding platforms. Crowdfunding platforms strive to gain new users and to maximise their impact through the design of engagement mechanisms. Social networks integration and mobile user experience are only few of the several techniques to engage users and foster their activity. “All-or-nothing” constraint, which enables the capital delivery only in case of campaign-goal achievement, aims at increasing crowd efficiency, encouraging coordination among platform users. Although the last six years were marked by the boom of crowdfunding industry, many users are still “peripheral”: they rarely or never take action. Kiva.org, the philanthropic platform I focused my thesis on, counts about one third of users that have never made a loan and 16% of lenders that have made one loan only. I approached the problem of users engagement and coordination suggesting the application of gamification to philanthropic crowdfunding platforms. In particular, I designing the Gamification Wheel, a gamification framework addressed to crowdfunding organizations. Through the framework, I aimed at facilitate organizations in designing an effective gamification system, via both a user-centric method and a business oriented approach. Through my research I found out that gamification can be exploited to foster several user actions, not only donation or lending but also contents sharing and team building. Moreover, I experienced gamification design as a process instead of a set of game elements. In this regard, after interviewed three field experts to validate the framework, I designed Impact to show that game elements are just a mean to the design of an effective gamification system.

While there is quite a bit of data about the people and companies who commit Linux kernel code, there isn’t much data about how people work together on the kernel mailing lists where they decide what patches will be accepted. Using a few of the top subsystem mailing lists as examples, Dawn Foster will share her PhD research into how people collaborate on the kernel mailing lists, including network visualizations of mailing list interactions between contributors. You can expect to learn more about the people, their employers, and other data that impacts how people participate on the mailing lists. For example, do timezones influence collaboration? How about source code contributions? Dawn will also give a brief overview of her 20+ year career both before and after going back to school to get her PhD along with some information about her involvement in OpenUK.
