Background
One of the most valuable features of green roof infrastructure is that it
generates a wide range of social, economic and environmental benefits.
As we moved to the 21st century, green roofs can address many of the
challenges faced by urban residents.
The following describes some of the significant benefits of green roofs.
Mahler building, Amsterdam (a)
1. Energy Saving
Provide shade and remove heat from the air through evapotranspira-
tion, this in turns helps to reduce heat from the surrounding area, as
well as decreasing the amount of energy required to cool the building.
2. Stormwater Management
Reduces the amount of stormwater runoff and also delays the time at
which runoff occurs, resulting in decreased stress on sewer systems at
peak flow periods. With green roofs, water is stored by the substrate
and then taken up by the plants from where it is returned to the atmos- Mahler building, Amsterdam (b)
phere through transpiration and evaporation.

3. Roof Membrane Protection and Life Extension
Help to protect roofing membranes from extreme temperature
fluctuations and negative impact of ultraviolet radiation. Green roofs will
easily double the life span of a conventional roof, and thus
decrease the need for re-roofing. These are direct operational cost savings
to the building owner.

4. Sound Insulation
The combination of soil, plants and trapped layers of air within green
roof systems can act as a sound insulation barrier. Sound waves are ab-
sorbed, reflected or deflected. The growing medium tends to block
lower sound frequencies while the plants block higher frequencies.
5. Fire Resistance
Slow the spread of fire to and from the building through the roof,
particularly where the growing medium is saturated. Mahler building, Amsterdam (d)

6. Reduce "Urban Heat Island Effect" (*UHI)
Help to reduce building heating and cooling costs due to buffering effect
of the plant matter and soil. Green roofs are an important component in
an overall strategy to offset the negative impacts of "Urban Heat Island
Effect". Like urban forests and reflective roofing surfaces they absorb
and deflect solar radiation so that it does not produce heat.

7. Generate Aesthetic Benefits
Turn wasted roof space into various types of amenity space for building
occupants, improving quality of life.
*UHI - describes built up areas that are hotter than nearby rural areas. UHI can affect
communities by increasing peak energy demand, air-conditioning costs, air pollution, heat-
related illnesses and water quality.

Benefit from Jiffy's experience in their production
and supply of specialized substrate for roof gardens
Sustainable construction is becoming an increasingly important subject within the building
sector. Sustainability of buildings is getting more required from both consumers as the building
sector. Jiffy's Green Roof Substrates for roof gardens greatly buffer the flow of rainwater so
that drains have more time to transport the water. In addition, roof gardens provide a significant
reduction in particulate matter as they clean the air. Even more, because they help insulate
buildings providing cooling in hot weather and reducing the “Urban Heat Island Effect”.

and Quality Mark
RHP - the quality mark for substrates and raw materials
The RHP quality mark for substrates is issued by the RHP Foundation.
Located in the netherlands, RHP is the leading centre of expertise on
substrates and soil improving materials in Europe. The RHP quality
mark is granted to traders, producers and importers of peat products.
The quality mark covers raw materials, potting soil mixtures and
substrates, making sure all substrates abide by the stringent production
guidelines of the foundation.
The RHP quality mark guarantees the products' quality throughout the
entire production chain, from extraction from their source to processing
by the buyer.

RhP and RAG; Product Certification
and Quality Mark
RAG - the quality mark for soil supply and soil improvers
The substrate with the RAG-quality mark has amongst others been
tested on chemical, physical and phytosanitary requirements. The raw
materials that are used for the production of the substrates have been
tested on the quantity of germinative weed seeds. If the requirement
for this is exceeded, such materials are rejected for the application of
the RAG-quality mark.
This system of quality control supplies the best possible assurance on:
• best growth circumstances.
• Good air and water content in the culture medium.
• Regular supply of nutrients in the soil.
• Stable medium.

Certificate
jiffy Products International bv has a quality system in
place, conforming to the norms of the ISO 9001 quality
control system applicable to the following activities:
Production, Trade, Transportation and development of
substrates and related horticultural products. The cer-
tificate has been granted by an accredited certification
body.
RHP Certificate
Quality is the main ingredient of the products delivered by jiffy. All jiffy substrates carry the
RHP certificate as securing the customer a uniform quality product every single time. The
RHP quality mark for substrates is issued by the Stichting RHP (RHP Foundation), the leading
centre of expertise on substrates and soil-improving materials in Europe, and is granted to
traders, producers and importers of peat products, raw materials, potting soil mixtures and
substrates. the RHP quality mark has been developed by the RHP Foundation to guarantee
the products' quality throughout the entire production chain, from extraction from their
source to processing by the buyer.

Quality and Jiffy Group Certifications
Quality Guarantee
The RHP quality mark constitutes the basis for watertight agreements
with substrate suppliers concerning the quality requirements with which
a substrate must comply. An independent organization performs checks
for compliance with these agreements, so that growers can rest assured
that the supplied substrate will be of perfect quality.
Uniform Product
The stringent requirements with which substrates bearing the RHP
quality mark must comply translates into every grower using RHP-
approved substrates will know that the products will not deviate from
the specifications in an inadmissible manner. So no matter what season;
Summer, Fall, Winter or Spring, you can be reassured that the quality of
an RHP approved substrate will be the same.

Crop Insurance
Insurance companies often refer to the RHP-quality mark when dealing with crop insurance
as for them, RHP certification is a sound guarantee often rewarded with attractive premiums
for you.
Limited Risk Factors
As the RHP Foundation's quality assurance system covers the entire production chain, risk
factors are excluded at a very early stage to leave absolutely nothing to chance.
