OpenStack is an open source cloud operating system. More and more Service Provider and Enterprise customers are looking for a top-to-bottom cloud stack that is rapidly deployable, open source based and does not break the bank and this is where OpenStack shines. For more information please visit our website here: http://www.cisco.com/web/CA/index.html

The best way to understand the cloud, is to have one of your own to kick around, poke, break, fix, and see what it looks like when it's running. In OpenStack we've got a whole project called Devstack which is designed to quickly bootstrap the latest git versions of all the OpenStack components and create an experimentation friendly OpenStack environment. This talk will introduce Devstack, how to get a running OpenStack with it, and how one might begin making changes and seeing them in action. We'll explore a few of the major OpenStack services, see what's going on, all with the intent to explain what OpenStack is by seeing not only the interface, but the internals at work. Presented at LinuxCon NA 2014

The last couple of years have seen an increasing interest in Docker and related technologies. One of these technologies is CoreOS, a new operating system built from the ground up for running Docker containers at scale. In this talk we will learn about CoreOS main concepts and tools. We will get our hands dirty as we work together toward a goal of running a CoreOS cluster on AWS (using Ansible) and running docker containers on it. The talk will conclude with a discussion on the place of Ansible (and configuration management tools in general) in the "next-generation" stack.

Many facets of using an IaaS cloud like OpenNebula can be greatly simplified by using a configuration management tool such as Puppet. This includes the management of hosts as well as the management of cloud resources such as virtual machines and networks. Of course, Puppet can also play an important role in the management of the actual workload of virtual machine instances. Besides using it in the traditional, purely agent-based way, it is also possible to use Puppet during the building of machine images. This serves two purposes: firstly, it speeds up the initial Puppet run when an instance is launched off that image, sometimes quite dramatically. Secondly, it supports operating immutable infrastructure without losing Puppet’s benefits to organize and simplify the description of the entire infrastructure. This talk will show how Puppet can be used by adminsitrators to manage OpenNebula hosts, and by users to manage their infrastructure as well as how to use Puppet during image builds.

Slides from Daniel Figucio, Field CTO at Github APAC from his talk at Wellington DevOps Group on 6 September, 2022 https://www.meetup.com/wellington-devops-group/events/287973178/ Adopting this modern approach to software development can be transformative—enabling collaboration and fostering the creation of high quality code. But understanding the principles, and potential challenges, is critical to success. Many companies use the word “innersource” to describe how their engineering teams work together on code. Innersource is a development methodology where engineers build proprietary software using best practices from large-scale open source projects, like Kubernetes or Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code. Large-scale open source projects require coordination and teamwork across thousands of contributors. The most successful ones are driven by a vision for their future, in addition to day-to-day user needs: speed, reliability, and functionality. The scale at which these operate can teach us a few lessons—and help your business build better software, faster using innersource.

Dubai, often portrayed as a shimmering oasis in the desert, faces its own set of challenges, including the occasional threat of flooding. Despite its reputation for opulence and modernity, the emirate is not immune to the forces of nature. In recent years, Dubai has experienced sporadic but significant floods, testing the resilience of its infrastructure and communities. Among the critical lifelines in this bustling metropolis is the Dubai International Airport, a bustling hub that connects the city to the world. This article explores the intersection of Dubai flood events and the resilience demonstrated by the Dubai International Airport in the face of such challenges.

Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.

When you’re building (micro)services, you have lots of framework options. Spring Boot is no doubt a popular choice. But there’s more! Take Quarkus, a framework that’s considered the rising star for Kubernetes-native Java. It always depends on what's best for your situation, but how to choose the best solution if you're comparing 2 frameworks? Both Spring Boot and Quarkus have their positives and negatives. Let us compare the two by live coding a couple of common use cases in Spring Boot and Quarkus. After this talk, you’ll be ready to get started with Quarkus yourself, and know when to select Quarkus or Spring Boot.

The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. About the author With two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing.
