English in a fun way. All the
teachers are very nice and knowl-
edgeable. We feel it’s very easy
to understand when they teach
us. The teachers give us many
fun games that are good for both
entertainment and learning. I
love Phoenix school.”

really love studying here, it’s so
fun. My teacher is Mr. Neal, he
as well as all teachers here are
very friendly. I love them, I love
Phoenix School!”

5. Tet is my favorite holiday of the year. During Tet
holiday, everyone returns to their family and they
go out. During Tet, we do many traditional things.
We get a break from school and most children stay
at home and play cards, computer games or some of
them go visit their cousins. The traditional foods for
Tet are banh chung and banh tet. A lot of families
usually prepare candies, sunflower seeds, food and
drinks to welcome their friends and family. A few
families turn on the traditional Tet music. Markets
are full of customers and a lot of people spend their
time preparing their houses or going shopping.
My parents buy a big pot of yellow flowers called
hoa mai and put it in front of the house. When Tet
comes, it becomes very beautiful. The best thing
that I like about Tet is getting lucky money from
many people. When my family go visit our cousins,
my cousins, my uncle and my aunt give me a lot of
lucky money. Normally, my parents invite their
friends to our house and throw a Tet holiday party.
But this year, they are going to celebrate a party at
their restaurant. Tet is a wonderful holiday.

The best thing about Tet is everyone returns home.
We can meet our family who work in other cities.
Do you know why I love Tet? I love Tet because it
is one of the biggest holidays of my life. I get lots of
lucky money and eat lots traditional foods of Tet in
Hue. In Tet at my school we have a break so we can
play lots game in the break. On the first day of Tet
we go to visit the neighbors and visit grandparents.
During Tet we can get more or lose lucky money
when we play cards and other games. During Tet I
usually sleep at home and watch lots of great mov-
ies. Before Tet my mom goes to the supermarket
and buys candy and other things to prepare before
Tet. Two days later is Tet and mom checks the
candy and we have already eaten all of it, so she
needs to buy it again. Before Tet in Hue we have
lots of flower markets and it is really beautiful. My
mom always buys the best sunflower in the market.
The bad thing about Tet is just having it on three
days a year. This year I will go to Sai Gon and I will
countdown with my mom. I will do lots of things,
and stay at home and play with my brother. My
teacher Mr. Chris says he loves Vietnamese Tet
songs. Tet has lots of names like “Tet Nguyen
Dan”, “The Vietnamese New Year” and “Lunar
New Year”. The best thing about Tet is fireworks
and each year they are more beautiful than the pre-
vious year.
At my house we usually have the end of the year
party. We invite neighbors and friends to celebrate
the party. Tet is really important and the first people
who come to your house are important too because
the tradition says the first person who comes to our
house makes us more lucky. Thank you for reading.

Tết Holiday

6. Tết is a celebration of the New Year according
to the lunar calendar. Tết is a great time for
families and friends to come together. This is
one big important part about Tết. I love Tết be-
cause I get to visit my grandparents. It is al-
ways sunny on Tết and I hope it will be sunny
this year. I like to visit my family, eat Tết food
and have a break from school. Tết food is dif-
ferent from other food because it is a special
holiday. I really like watermelon seeds, sun-
flower seeds and banh chung.
When I visit my family, I always have to wear
fancy clothes but I don’t mind. I get to play
cards and games. One thing I really like about
Tết is decorating, because we get to decorate
the house and trees, and buy flowers and
plants. My favorite part about Tết is the music
and getting lucky money. I like listening to Tết
music.

7. A TERRIFIC TET!
I am looking forward to Tet because I might go to Lebanon to meet my
dad at work. Lebanon is a country in the Middle East near Syria and
Israel. I can go to the park on Le Loi Street. It has a rollercoaster that
goes round and round called Crazy Wave. Another is called UFO it
goes up and down. My favorite ride is theUFO because it goes up
about 30 metres high! I can eat treats and many Tet cakes when I visit
houses of my neighbors and family. My favorite thing about Tet is re-
ceiving lucky money. With my money I am going to buy an iWatch and
buy Magnetic Thinking Putty.

I am looking forward to Tet because it’s my first year in Vietnam so
Tet is very new to me. I am interested to find out about it and I will be
able to go to my brother’s house and play with him. I’m looking for-
ward to getting candy from the red Tet bowl and eating egg rolls when
I visit people’s houses. I’m excited about getting lucky money from
the people I know and buying a very expensive watch with a 24 hour
display and an alarm to help me wake up at 6:30 a.m.

I am looking forward to Tet because my Vietnamese age will turn
into double digits, because I will be 10 years old. Everyone in
Vietnam turns 1 year older at Tet. We get to see the fireworks
from the citadel at my house. They explode into different colors
and one even makes a smiley face. I want to visit the amusement
park on Le Loi Street to ride the Crazy Wave rollercoaster. It
spins up and down and round and round, I will feel happy after
the ride. I am going to save the lucky money I get so that when l
grow up I can buy all the things that will help me in my dream of
becoming an architect.

10. Tet Nguyen Dan, or Tet for short, is the biggest and most popular festival of the year in
Vietnam. Therefore, Vietnamese people need to make good preparations to welcome the
New Year festival.
Phoenix School celebrated Tet Nguyen Dan for all Phoenix students on February 4,
2016. There were so many popular Tet activities such as, decorating the apricot blossom
tree, making the traditional cakes (banh chung, banh tet), playing the traditional
games, writing letters with calligrapher and joining in the village fair. The students were
so excited and enjoyed them. That was really a good chance for them to learn more
about Tet and its distinguished culture.
Tết Nguyên Đán là lễ hội lớn nhất và phổ biến nhất trong năm ở Việt Nam. Người Việt
cần chuẩn bị tốt mọi thứ để chào đón năm mới.
Trường Phượng Hoàng đã tổ chức ngày Tết Nguyên Đán cho tất cả học sinh trong
trường vào ngày 4 tháng 2 năm 2016 rất nhiều hoạt động phổ biến trong ngày tết đã
diễn ra như: trang trí cây mai vàng, gói bánh chưng, bánh tét, chơi các trò chơi dân
gian, viết thư pháp cùng ông đồ và tham gia chợ quê ngày tết. Tất cả học sinh đều cảm
thấy hứng thú khi tham gia các hoạt động. Đó thật sự là một cơ hội tốt cho các em học
tập về ngày tết cổ truyền và phân biệt bản sắc văn hóa của dân tộc

12. Sunny Class
The Lunar New Year is coming and in spite of the cold weather, our students joined in
outdoor activities and really had a lot of fun playing and learning. Some students were
interested in making Banh Chung, Banh Tet and playing some traditional games.
