Topic objective differentiation opportunities links
1 WALT – Correct technique
when running.
WILF - Arms and legs moving
together, trying to run as fast as
they can.
Warm up - Domes and Dishes.
Discuss how children can improve
performance and then need for warm up
activity. Discuss how 2 different warm
ups have affected the body
Developing fast running. Use the ideas on
the back of the card to develop the
children’s style when sprinting.
Sprint start relay – discuss with children
how to make an effective start from as low
as possible and gradually coming more
upright.
Tick-tag Relay – discuss how to use arms
and legs effectively.
Using 60m straight get children to
practise fast starts using what they have
learnt from TOP card Sprint Start Relay.
Task - Put them into groups of 5 or 6
(ability grouped) and have each team run
50m using the straight. Have the children
time each other to see if they can beat
their score next time.

2-3 WALT – Running over hurdles
safely and without breaking
stride.
WILF -Trying to coordinate
arms and legs as they jump over
the hurdles.
Warm up -Collecting the beanbag.
Discuss how children can improve
performance and then need for warm up
activity. Discuss how 2 different warm ups
have affected the body.
Running over hurdles. The hurdles will
need setting up with beanbags inside for
weights, (if using the corroflute hurdles).
Discuss with children the best position and
show on ground. (NB leading leg stretched
out in front trailing leg tucked up behind,
same arm as leading leg in front, other out
behind). Have several lines running at
once. Discuss safety of using hurdles. (If
windy this activity is best done inside).
(This activity will probably be the main
focus of the second lesson).
Task -Put them into groups of 5 or 6
(ability grouped) and have each team run
50m hurdles using the straight. Have the
children time each other to see if they can
beat their score next time.

Jumping for height. Discuss how to take
off and land and also the various ways of
doing so (see back of card). Explain that
although the obstacles are low, the aim is
to jump as high as possible. Which way of
takeoff and landing do they prefer?
Discuss how to improve height and length
of jumps. Use back of card for help with
developing the children’s A/D skills.
Jump the stream. Begin with seeing how
far they can jump with a two feet landing,
Then a step into a jump with a two feet
landing and finally introduce the hop step
jump sequence
Task - Set up a jumping competition.
Using the standing long jump mat, the
speed bouncer and the vertical jumper.
Have the children rotate round the
activities and measure and time each other
and see if they can improve their
performance by remembering and using
the skills taught in the first part of the
lesson.

children into 4 teams. (If no net available
have line marked with cones). 2 teams will
play against each other in each of the
throwing areas. Play the activity as shown
on the card. Begin by using just beanbags
and an under arm throw. Remind the
children that their beanbags have to stay
inside their throwing area, and to throw
into a space. Use the back of the card for
help on developing their understanding of
KUFH.
Explain to the children the differences
between the types of throws that can be
done – push, pull, heave or sling.
Clean the Playground. Put the children
into pairs and get them to practise each of
the throws. (Look at back of card for
teaching points for each throw). Make
sure that the children have enough room
to throw into space without trajectories
crossing. If room restricted have children
number themselves 1 and 2. Have all
number 1’s line up and throw at the same
time and then swap over. All balls should
be collected at the same time when
everyone has thrown.

put into practise the skills they have
learnt. Also have a wider variety of objects
for them to throw, to help them decide
which throw is best suited to which object.
Set up a mini Sports event.
Have ‘track’ and ‘field’ events that the
children work round in teams – the
cumulative score is important.
Event 1
Hurdles – 4 lanes children hurdle down
and sprint back (relay) descending points
for 1st
, 2nd
etc.
Event 2
Sprints – 4 lanes 50 m – children race
down and points awarded for placing.
Team score added at the end.
Event 3
Throwing the beanbag – 1 child from each
team throws together – furthest gets 4
points etc, team total added at end.
Event 4
Jumping – each team member given 1
minute to see how many two-foot bounces
they can do over the speed bouncer or a
line of markers. Total score added at end.
Final team score is added up after last
event.
