3. Introduction Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (March 1714 -December 1788) was a German musician and composer. The second of five sons of Johann Bach and Maria Bach. He was a crucial composer in the transition between the Baroque and Classical periods.
4. Life (1) 1.- When he was ten years old he entered the St. Thomas School at Leipzig. 2.- In 1738, at the age of 24 he determined to devote himself to music. 3.- In 1740 Carl Philipp became a member of the royal orchestra. 4.- His reputation was established by the two sets of sonatas which he dedicated respectively to Frederick the Great.
5. Life (2) His main work was concentrated on the clavier, for which he composed, at this time (1756), nearly two hundred sonatas. He married JohannaDannemann in 1744. Only three of their children lived to adulthood: - Johann Adam - Anna Carolina - Johann Sebastian
6. Legacy Through the latter half of the 18th century, the reputation of C.P.E. Bach stood very high: - Mozart said of him, "He is the father, we are the children.“ - The best part of Haydn's training was derived from a study of his work. - Beethoven expressed for his genius the most cordial admiration and regard.
7. Musical Style His keyboard sonatas mark an important epoch in the history of musical form. Lucid in style, delicate and tender in expression. The content of his work is full of invention and, most importantly, extreme unpredictability.
