  3. 3. Since the time of Florence Nightingale, nurses have been trying to define what makes nursing a unique profession. She was the first to describe nursing as both art and science<br />Art<br />Science<br />

Nursing: Both Art and Science<br />Nursing as an ART<br />Based on a framework of caring and dignity<br />Acknowledges the dynamic processes of spirituality, healing, empathy and mutual respect<br />Embraces healing through compassion, helping, competence, being present, tolerance, acceptance and nurturing <br />Nursing as a SCIENCE<br />Based on critical thinking<br />Requires clinical decision-making <br />Relies on evidence to guide practice<br />Uses strategies to provide optimal outcomes<br />

Nursing Defined<br />It has not been until the last 40 years that professional nursing organizations began to define the professional responsibilities of registered nurses. <br />Although there are many specialty nursing organizations, the American Nurses Association represents an authority in professional nursing without regard to the nurse’s practice environment<br />

ANA’s Definition of Nursing<br /> “Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations. “<br />(Nursing's Social Policy Statement, Second Edition, 2003, p. 6 & Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2004, p. 7)<br />
  7. 7. The ANA Standards of Practice are consistent with the nursing process we are all familiar with.<br />

ANA Standards of Nursing Practice<br />Standard 1 – Assessment<br />The registered nurse collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient’s health or the situation.<br />Standard 2 – Diagnosis<br />The registered nurse analyzes the assessment data to determine the diagnoses or issues.<br />Standard 3 – Outcomes Identification<br />The registered nurse identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or the situation.<br />Standard 4 – Planning<br />The registered nurse develops a plan that prescribes strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes.<br />Standard 5 – Implementation<br />The registered nurse implements the identified plan.<br />The registered nurse coordinates care delivery.<br />The registered nurse employs strategies to promote health and safe environment.<br />Standard 6 – Evaluation<br />The registered nurse evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes.<br />

ANA Standards of Professional Performance<br />Quality of Practice<br />The registered nurse systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.<br />Education<br />The registered nurse attains knowledge and competency that reflects current nursing practice.<br />Professional Practice Evaluation<br />The registered nurse evaluates one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules, and regulations.<br />Collegiality<br />The registered nurse interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and colleagues.<br />Collaboration<br />The registered nurse collaborates with patient, family, and others in the conduct of nursing practice.<br />

ANA Standards of Professional Performance<br />Ethics<br />The registered nurse integrates ethical provisions in all areas of practice.<br />Research<br />The registered nurse integrates research findings into practice.<br />Resource Utilization<br />The registered nurse considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and the impact on practice in the planning and delivery of nursing services.<br />Leadership<br />The registered nurse provides leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession.<br />
