3. CSP Case Study

Active Cumbria
Active Cumbria has focussed on open events, with attendees signed up from a range
of organisations. To do this, they:
• Choose a geographical area in which to hold an event. They do this by identifying
organisations that may be interested in Sport Makers, such as workplaces or
colleges. They aim to attract around 20 people to each event.
• Contact organisations and arrange to visit their staff, students etc.
• Visit organisations, selling the benefits of the programme and, using an iPad, sign
up interested people there and then.
Personally inviting Sport Makers to attend events has had the most impact on
attendance. Active Cumbria has had 398 attendees in total, 61% of their registered
Sport Makers.

• The CSP found that using posters and flyers to advertise events didn’t
work. Instead, they promote events through Twitter and local partners.
• By running open events with people from different organisations, the
CSP has built links within communities. This mix of people also
encourages local sport clubs, invited by the CSP, to attend events in
order to support the deployment of Sport Makers.
• Because of the rural nature of their patch, the CSP knew they might
struggle to get in excess of 20 people to their events. They decided
early on to run a higher number of events with fewer attendees, buying
extra events at the end of the programme, if necessary.

• With few clubs or events in the region, there are few formal deployment
opportunities available to Sport Makers. However, with a rural landscape
suitable for outdoor pursuits such as walking and running, Active Cumbria
has focussed on informal deployment of Sport Makers .

• The CSP found that only 25% of Sport Makers were recording their hours
in the usual way. To combat this, they have been phoning and emailing
Sport Makers, recording their hours for them.
• They also provide businesses with the Sport Makers Business Challenge
Wallchart (available through the Hub). The CSP phones businesses and
asks them what hours are on the chart, recording them online.
• The CSP have 186 Sport Makers who have recorded 10+ hours, 47% of
their attendees.
