Picking the right style and character is usually the biggest hurdle most people
face when buying their first cosplay. It’s possible to spend days — even weeks —
on the issue without coming to a decision, which can be an incredibly frustrating
and de-motivating experience. I know, because I’ve struggled with the process
myself. I wrote this Guide to help take the confusion and stress out of the
selection and research process, and to help increase the chances of picking a
comfortable, and reliable cosplay piece that you can use for multiple times.
As with most costume type clothing, cosplay is not something just for your own.
From the moment of researching to finally wearing one, this can be a long
patient process. Therefore, most people would ask their family and friends for
their opinion and tell them about this experience. It is also something that you
will wear to share to friends and take beautiful photos of yourself in this

Otaku clothing! Every Sunday in Tokyo’s
Yoyogi Park, one can find Japanese teens and adults
in all sorts of outrageous outfits. From glam rock
wannabes to video game and anime characters, the
park is packed with those who choose to leave
behind their normal lives for an afternoon. These
costumed park goers are practicing what the
Japanese call cosplay, a word that combines the first
syllable of “costume” and the last of “role-play.”

History of Cosplay!
Starting from Japan
Cosplaying is a great interest to most
people, as such we want them to maintain
and keep them in good condition. Here
are a few simple things you can do to keep
them in great passion.
1. Pick the character you want to cosplay.
The more obscure the anime, the more
wow’s you will get. For example, you’ll get
more street cred if you dress as
Lunamaria Hawke from Gundam SEED
Destiny than as the giant mecha himself.
Most importantly, though, choose a
character that speaks to you. If that
happens to be Ken from Street Fighter,
then so be it.
2. Draw a illustration of the outfit.
What is the character’s best outfit? How
does she wear her hair? What accessories
does she wear? Make a list of things you
can buy ready-made at the store, of things
you would have to custom-order, and
things you can make yourself. Most likely,
the entire outfit will be a combination of
3. Buy the parts you need.
Wigs, ribbons, etc. And don’t forget the
makeup and color contacts & dash a must,
even if you’re a dude.
4. Make the rest.
Find a fabric and accessories store near
you. If you don’t know how to sew, now’s
the time to learn.
5. Try it on.
Make sure everything fits perfectly, and
check back with the original animated
drawings to double check that you look
like a replica of the character. It’s okay to
add your own unique touches, but the
idea is to step out of your own skin and
enter the 2D world &mdash so keep that

have faith in yourself, do not go out
and look for a successful personality
and duplicate it.”

“A good head and a good heart are always
a formidable combination.”
Do Cosplay Characters you are related to or
enjoy and study the Character’s mannerism, paying
close attention to how the character carries
Do have at least 3 different poses. This is where
the studying comes in. Find poses that you feel
expresses the character best
Do try to bring the character to life. You never
know-you might make someone’s day. Try to have a
reference image of every angle. If this isn’t
possible, use your better judgement of the other
Don’t cosplay for the sake of entering contests
and winning. Cosplay is suppose to be a fun hobby
for everyone, not a competition. Also, don’t make
a sign to carry around, it can be quite tacky.
Don’t treat others inferior to you just because
the quality of their costume is not at it’s peak.
Cosplayers are all equal.
Don’t think you are the only one that cosplays
that characters or the “best” at the character.
There are others that cosplay the same character,
believe it or not, no one is better than anyone else.

Modern cosplay in Japan still revolves
around conventions. While one can find
cosplayers on any given day, the masked
masses come out in droves for conventions.
Small groups of cosplayers, called “circles,”
will usually attend these events together with
similarly themed outfits. At the same time,
camera-kozo, hobbyist photographers who
specialize in cosplay, flock to conventions to
capture their obsession on film.
