NAV CHETNA
  SOCIETY
Message from the
                                           President
Since the outset of my leadership, I have resolved to undertake the herculean task of making an endeavour to
bring about social changes for which with the help of all the members, we have painstakingly worked out the
NGO's goals in minute detail .

Under my Presidency the NGO has initially taken small steps by adopting a village 'Rooina' in Pithoragarh
(Uttarakhand) and has created self help 'Navchetna Mahila Mangal Dal' group for its women .

In addition to a host of numerous activities of educating women by conducting training programmes as well as
providing help to the deprived children, the NGO also undertakes organising forums, seminars, camps etc to
inculcate good living habits amongst the villagers and tribal women.

The primary aim of the NGO is upliftment of women and child welfare.

The NGO aims to expand its work areas to provide help/shelter/facilities for old people, and disabled persons for
their welfare, publish journals and reproduce works of arts, literature, science, crafts etc for instructions and
imparting useful knowledge, provide help to people suffering from natural calamities such as
flood, earthquakes, motor accidents etc as well as fight against exploitation, injustice, corruption if found against
any individual, class, community in the society.
I seek support from all who associate with the NGO who help in achieving its vision.

JAI HIND !

HISTORY

 A few 'Like Minded' friends got together in 2010 with a desire to
contribute to society. The functioning started off in small measure by
donating 'warm clothing' to villagers in cold winters. The state of women
and children was found to be pitiable and at that time more than mere
words, there was nothing much one could do.

 The group resolved to form an NGO, spearheaded by their President
,with the most appropriate name „'NavChetna', the word meaning 'New
Consciousness„, with the primary Endeavour of raising consciousness of
people towards 'Women Empowerment and Child Welfare'.

 NavChetna Society was thereafter, legally constituted, as a non-
governmental organization vide Uttarakhand letter no. KPI 208 &
    Registration no.463 on 31st March 2012.

 The office of the NGO is presently under construction in Pithoragarh and
    its activities are in concurrence.

Smt.Kabutari Devi (also known as) Smt. Tijanbai

1st Female Folk singer of Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand Sanskriti – NavChetna Society Ka Yogdaan

 Smt. Kabutari Devi a famous folk singer of Uttarakhand also known as
Smt. Tijanbai, who was a performer in All India Radio and winner of
numerous Life Time achievement awards, was not keeping well for the
    last few years.

 June 2012 her condition deterioted and fell seriously ill and nearly lost her
voice (which was the only source of her income as well as a symbol of
the rich cultural heritage of Uttarakhand), due to her chronic illness. The
case was brought to the notice of social organisations but there was no
    major help forthcoming.

 At last by the combined efforts of some like minded people Smt.
Kabootri Devi was taken to Sushila Devi Hospital in Haldwani by her
daughter Hemanti Devi with some local help from Honorable members
    of our NGO
 As the case was critical, the hospital authorities advised that there was no
option but to shift her to Delhi for treatment. The issue of who was to fund
her treatment was raised at the highest levels , claiming her to be an
important part of Uttarakhand heritage and that saving her voice was
everyone's responsibility and even that of the Government. This info was put
on the net. It was post rising public pressure, the Government of
Uttarakhand took the decision of bearing the complete expenses for her
    Treatment at AIIMS.

 Though the expenses were catered for, there was the problem of
coordinating her shifting and her being looked after at Delhi. Various
profit/non profit organisations had knowledge of this fact but no agency
came forward to coordinate/take care of Ms Kabootri Devi‟s treatment in
Delhi. Then it was the newly registered Nav Chetna Society – a Pithoragarh
registered NGO that offered her support.

 Following instructions of Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, renowned folk singer
of Uttarakhand Kabutari Devi was admitted in the private ward of AIIMS.
CM Bahuguna had a talk with Prof Ramesh Deka, Director, AIIMS and Dr DK
Sharma regarding proper arrangement for her treatment. The entire
expense of her treatment was borne by the State Government.

 The Resident Commissioner Office and Doctors of Uttarakhand posted at
Delhi extended all necessary help for the admission of Kabutari Devi and
    her treatment.
 Throughout Smt. Kabootri Devi's stay in AIMS the NavChetna Society
remained in constant touch with the Resident Commisioner and the AIIMS Dr
    coordinator Dr Joshi.

 The Nav Chetna Society is further thankful to CM, Uttarakhand as they
provided vehicle for pick and drop of personnel and including manpower for
bringing medicine/essentials from the market. Smt. Kabootri Devi in addition
to getting her treatment for her actual illness - Tuberculosis, was also given a
thorough medical check up wherein she was thoroughly checked by other
    medical departments (Ortho, ENT etc).

 Her stay lasted in AIMS for around two weeks post which she was shifted back
    to Haldwani.

 Ms Kabootri Devi is currently in good health and is known to be singing her folk
songs again. The Nav Chetna Siociety is still under constant touch with Smt.
Kabutari Devi‟s daughter Ms Hemanti Devi as well as the Resident
Commisioner of Uttarakhand Govt. for follow up.

       Prevention of Pollution/ Garbage disposal

Sustained efforts were made by the NGO, the DM Pithoragarh
and Army Authorities, were approached to prevent further
pollution of the stream running near the village „Rooina‟ in 2011.

The area was being contaminated by becoming a dumping
ground of household and medical waste and spreading disease
both to humans and cattle.

Due to our sincere efforts, our protests were duly heard. The
upper reaches of the river is no longer used as a dumping ground.
Consequently, the river is again comparatively much cleaner. The
water available through the local reservoir – “Naula” is again
sweet and healthy to drink.

Nav Chetna Society

  • 1. NAV CHETNA SOCIETY
  • 2. Message from the President Since the outset of my leadership, I have resolved to undertake the herculean task of making an endeavour to bring about social changes for which with the help of all the members, we have painstakingly worked out the NGO's goals in minute detail . Under my Presidency the NGO has initially taken small steps by adopting a village 'Rooina' in Pithoragarh (Uttarakhand) and has created self help 'Navchetna Mahila Mangal Dal' group for its women . In addition to a host of numerous activities of educating women by conducting training programmes as well as providing help to the deprived children, the NGO also undertakes organising forums, seminars, camps etc to inculcate good living habits amongst the villagers and tribal women. The primary aim of the NGO is upliftment of women and child welfare. The NGO aims to expand its work areas to provide help/shelter/facilities for old people, and disabled persons for their welfare, publish journals and reproduce works of arts, literature, science, crafts etc for instructions and imparting useful knowledge, provide help to people suffering from natural calamities such as flood, earthquakes, motor accidents etc as well as fight against exploitation, injustice, corruption if found against any individual, class, community in the society. I seek support from all who associate with the NGO who help in achieving its vision. JAI HIND ! Lt.(Ex Army) Sushma Bisht Mathur sushma@navchetnasociety.org

KPI 208 & Registration no.463 on 31st March 2012.  The office of the NGO is presently under construction in Pithoragarh and its activities are in concurrence.

  • 8. Successfully Accomplished Project (1) Smt.Kabutari Devi (also known as) Smt. Tijanbai 1st Female Folk singer of Uttarakhand Uttarakhand Sanskriti – NavChetna Society Ka Yogdaan  Smt. Kabutari Devi a famous folk singer of Uttarakhand also known as Smt. Tijanbai, who was a performer in All India Radio and winner of numerous Life Time achievement awards, was not keeping well for the last few years.  June 2012 her condition deterioted and fell seriously ill and nearly lost her voice (which was the only source of her income as well as a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of Uttarakhand), due to her chronic illness. The case was brought to the notice of social organisations but there was no major help forthcoming.  At last by the combined efforts of some like minded people Smt. Kabootri Devi was taken to Sushila Devi Hospital in Haldwani by her daughter Hemanti Devi with some local help from Honorable members of our NGO
  • 9. As the case was critical, the hospital authorities advised that there was no option but to shift her to Delhi for treatment. The issue of who was to fund her treatment was raised at the highest levels , claiming her to be an important part of Uttarakhand heritage and that saving her voice was everyone's responsibility and even that of the Government. This info was put on the net. It was post rising public pressure, the Government of Uttarakhand took the decision of bearing the complete expenses for her Treatment at AIIMS.  Though the expenses were catered for, there was the problem of coordinating her shifting and her being looked after at Delhi. Various profit/non profit organisations had knowledge of this fact but no agency came forward to coordinate/take care of Ms Kabootri Devi‟s treatment in Delhi. Then it was the newly registered Nav Chetna Society – a Pithoragarh registered NGO that offered her support.  Following instructions of Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, renowned folk singer of Uttarakhand Kabutari Devi was admitted in the private ward of AIIMS. CM Bahuguna had a talk with Prof Ramesh Deka, Director, AIIMS and Dr DK Sharma regarding proper arrangement for her treatment. The entire expense of her treatment was borne by the State Government.  The Resident Commissioner Office and Doctors of Uttarakhand posted at Delhi extended all necessary help for the admission of Kabutari Devi and her treatment.
  • 10. Throughout Smt. Kabootri Devi's stay in AIMS the NavChetna Society remained in constant touch with the Resident Commisioner and the AIIMS Dr coordinator Dr Joshi.  The Nav Chetna Society is further thankful to CM, Uttarakhand as they provided vehicle for pick and drop of personnel and including manpower for bringing medicine/essentials from the market. Smt. Kabootri Devi in addition to getting her treatment for her actual illness - Tuberculosis, was also given a thorough medical check up wherein she was thoroughly checked by other medical departments (Ortho, ENT etc).  Her stay lasted in AIMS for around two weeks post which she was shifted back to Haldwani.  Ms Kabootri Devi is currently in good health and is known to be singing her folk songs again. The Nav Chetna Siociety is still under constant touch with Smt. Kabutari Devi‟s daughter Ms Hemanti Devi as well as the Resident Commisioner of Uttarakhand Govt. for follow up.

The upper reaches of the river is no longer used as a dumping ground. Consequently, the river is again comparatively much cleaner.
