rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and

4 Primary Hindrances
to becoming a Christian who transforms their

And raised up your sons, O Zion, Against your sons, O Greece,
And made you like the sword of a mighty man."

36. 36
Influence Greek Philosophers vs Hebraic Roots.
• Greeks acquired wisdom by
reason and analysis.
• Hebrews acquired wisdom by
obedience.
Ps. 111:10 The fear of the Lord is
the beginning of wisdom.
• Early church understood that
knowledge was not what
changed the world, it was the
power of God working through
people.
My message and
my preaching were
not with wise and
persuasive words,
but with a
demonstration of
the Spirit's power,
so that your faith
might not rest on
men's wisdom, but
on God's power. 1

Hindrance #3: Religious Spirit
• Defines the religious spirit as “an agent of
Satan assigned to prevent change and
maintain the status quo by using religious
devices.”
- Dr. Peter Wagner
40. 40
Jesus primary opposition
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees,
you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices-
mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the
more important matters of the law-justice, mercy
and faithfulness…Matt 23:23-24
41. Spirit of Religion
• I must “do” something to be acceptable by God;
puts people under yoke of bondage; legalism
• Religion divides into sacred/secular
• Religion says only overt spiritual activity is
acceptable to God. i.e. Eric Liddell, running
• Bible study at work not necessary. “I go to
church on Sunday.”

Eph 3:17-19
And I pray that you, being rooted and
established in love, may have power,
together with all the saints, to grasp how
wide and long and high and deep is the
love of Christ, and to know this love that

filled to the measure of all the fullness of
God.

God created us with
seven needs
1. Dignity
2. Authority
3. Blessing & provision
4. Security
5. Purpose & meaning
6. Freedom & boundary
7. Intimate love & Companionship -
Genesis 1&2
51. Whenever we seek to meet one or more of
these basic needs outside God we have
set the stage for the development of a
generational stronghold.
Satan convinced Eve to believe God was
holding out on her, and He would not meet her
needs so she chose to meet her own need.
52. Examples of Generational
Strongholds
• Deceit &
Lying
Abraham,
Isaac, &
Jacob
• Control
Laban,
Rebekah,
Jacob,
King Saul
• Sexual – Ps 51

Rahab, David,

Absalom, Amnon,
Solomon
54. Spiritual Strongholds Work At The Subconscious
Level. Their Influence Is Often Unseen Until There Is
A Problem.
Strongholds are designed to keep us from
experiencing God’s love. Strongholds are often
generational.
All strongholds that are built in our lives are a
result of seeking to meet one or more of these
needs apart from God’s will for us.
55. Stronghold Development Process
1) Satan inspires THOUGHTS into my mind (subconsciously) which
appeal to my natural tendencies to meet needs.
2) Entertaining these thoughts brings on EMOTIONS.
3) Giving in to emotions eventually leads to taking some sort of
ACTION.
4) Continual participation in this behavior causes me to develop a
HABIT.
5) Once a habit is developed, a STRONGHOLD is built by that spirit
56. Strongholds oppress versus possess. They:
(1) Control, dictate, and influence our attitudes and
behavior;
(2) Oppress and discourage us; and
(3) Affect how we view or react to situations,
circumstances, or people.

60. But we have renounced the hidden things
of shame, not walking in craftiness nor
handling the word of God deceitfully, but
by manifestation of the truth commending
ourselves to every man's conscience in
the sight of God. 2 Cor 4:2-3
60
62. Arrested Development
Def: When a wound in childhood freezes
emotional maturity to within 2 years of the
wound. The adult lives as a child emotionally.
“ You’re acting like a child.”
62
63. “Arrested development that is caused by
the wounds of childhood amplifies or
magnifies our sin nature. The deeper the
wounds, the more we act selfishly and
childishly. When we have too much
childhood trauma, we are hindered in our
ability to develop genuine healthy
relationships with our Creator and others
close to us. We can’t readily reach out or
accept others—because our wounds have
made us unteachable, unable to trust and
afraid of truth.”
Dr. Paul Hegstrom, author of Broken children,
Grown Up Pain.
63
i.e., Michael Jackson
64. False-self - Poser
“I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid” (Gen. 3:10).
Whenever we are wounded we seek to hide from
our true self because our shame says we will
not be acceptable to others as we are. We are
driven to hide behind our “fig leaf” (false-self)
that protects us from our true self. This all
happens on a subconscious basis as a built-in
protection mechanism from wounds we received
as a child.
i.e. Groundhog day – Bill Murray
64
65. “90% of marital difficulties are rooted in a
trauma experienced by one or more
spouses between the age of 7 & 9.”
– Dr Paul Hegstrom
Arrested development sabotages the
heart’s good intentions and turns
us into a spiritual hypocrite. (Rom 6)
65
66. We all require others to live by the rules we
were required to live by in childhood.

become healed and free.

70. The Heart – John Eldredge
“His plan from the beginning was to assault the
heart, just as the Wicked Witch did to the Tin
Woodman. Make them so busy, they ignore the
heart. Wound them so deeply, they don't want a
heart. Twist their theology, so they despise the
heart. Take away their courage. Destroy their
creativity. Make intimacy with God impossible
for them.
70
71. The Heart – John Eldredge
Of course your heart would be the object
of a great and fierce battle. It is your most
precious possession. Without your heart you
cannot have God. Without your heart you cannot
have love. Without your heart you cannot have
faith. Without your heart you cannot find the
work you were meant to do. In other words,
without your heart you cannot have life. “
71
72. TGIF and 3 Lies Testimony
First of all, I want Os Hillman to know that for the past year and
a half, I have looked out for the daily devotion and I have read
it, and meditated on it. What is amazing, amazing is that every
day, every single day for the year and a half, I have received a
devotion that speaks to the situations of my day. It does not
come the next day, it comes that day to speak to that situation. I
just don't understand it. This year, I started specifically praying
and thanking God for your ministry.
I would like to hear more about learning to contend. Am eager
to learn more about how to come into agreement with God.

• Neurotransmitter -Nervous system, brain
stem
– Emits“Feel good” hormone
• Negative or painful emotion causes under-
secretion of serotonin – Satan
• Hypothalamus/ brainstem connection = drop in
serotonin
• = addictive behavior
78. Neurotransmitters
• The neurotransmitters dopamine and
serotonin act as chemical messengers that
relay nerve signals through the brain.
• Dopamine regulates muscle movement,
motivation and the sensation of pleasure.
• Serotonin primarily affects mood,
impulsiveness and social behaviors.
78
79. 4 Lies
79
1. Believe God is not faithful.
2. Addictive habit will satisfy.
3. Believe habit is stronger than power of
God
4. Addiction is just the way you are.
Craig Hill
80. Men Not Nurtured/Received Physical Affection as Children
• Sexualized as adult
• Look to wife to get what they did not get in
childhood
• “Sex is love”
• Wife can never satisfy “hunger”
• “ You’re a sex addict.”
Never had a basic need met as a child
80
81. And He gave them their request,
But sent leanness into their soul. Ps 106:15
When we live in compromise we lose
confidence in the faith dimension of our
lives. We struggle to hear the voice of
God which forces us to live our Christian
life through performance and the flesh.
81
83. Larry Crabb, Shattered Dreams
All of us are trapped by addiction to a desire for
something less than God. For many women, that
something less is relational control. “I will not
be hurt again and I will not let people I love be
hurt. I’ll see to it that what I fear never happens
again.” They therefore live in terror of vulnerably
presenting themselves to anyone and instead
become determined managers of people. Their
true femininity remains safely tucked away
behind the walls of relational control.
83
84. Larry Crabb, Shattered Dreams
More common in men is an addiction to non-relational
control. “I will experience deep and consuming
satisfaction without ever having to relate meaningfully
with anyone.” They keep things shallow and safe with
family and friends and feel driven to experience a joy
they never feel, a joy that only deep relating can provide.
Their commitment is twofold: to never risk revealing
inadequacy by drawing close to people and, without
breaking that commitment, to feel powerful and alive.
Power in business and illicit sex are favorite strategies
for reaching that goal.

91. We overcome the influence of strongholds
by renouncing and repenting of their
influence through the prayer of faith in
Jesus’ blood to cleanse us from these
influences.
92. Whenever the reaction to
a situation seems to
be an extreme
response compared to
the offense, you can
know there is
unresolved pain or the
enemy is at work in the
situation.
When people react out of
their pain their
behavior is never
logical. 93
94. Process of Discovery & Deliverance
• Symptom – “Lights on the dash”
• What is the root of this behavior?
• Revisit the wound – identify the event(s)
• Discover the lie - agreement you are making
• Apply truth – “The truth shall make you
free”

95. John 8:31-32
Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him,
"If you abide in My word, you are My disciples

Steps to Freedom From
Strongholds
1.Identify Strongholds and their Symptoms. Rank them
from 1(lowest influence)-10 (greatest) by the level of
influence they have. Work with someone close to
you to confirm the strongholds. i.e., spouse, close
friend.
2. Confess and renounce the influence of strongholds
in Jesus’ name. Each believer has the power of the
Holy Spirit to renounce the influence of strongholds
over their life. We “have divine power to demolish
strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4).
3. Meditate and walk according to the Word. Renew
your mind.
99. Any self-image contrary
to the truth of who God
says you are in the
spirit is a false self-
image. You must agree
with God, not with your
flesh or the devil.
100
101. “Let this mind be in
you that is also Jesus
Christ.” Phil 2:5
102
102. Whatever God sets you free from He
automatically gives you an anointing to set
other people free from the same thing you
were a victim of. That is your payback on
the enemy.
