Cleaning Homes with Organic Cleaning Products
Eco-friendly cleaning products used for cleaning homes are called so because they are meant to be safer for
the environment. Furthermore, eco-friendly products used for cleaning a home or business are advertised as
natural cleaning products since they are made using plant-based materials instead of synthetic chemicals.
Other terms used for eco-friendly products used for cleaning homes are non-toxic cleaning products, green
cleaning products and environment-friendly cleaning products.
Eco-friendly cleaning products used for cleaning a home or business are different from traditional cleaning
products in their basic formulation. For example, many cleaning products make use of synthetic ingredients,
bleaching agents, anti-bacterial agents, protein dissolvers and other chemicals in order to enhance
performance. However, there is concern over the potential dangers associated with these chemicals and
their impact on the health of people as well as the environment. In point of fact, many of the ingredients are
suspected carcinogens, neurotoxins, and/or are categorized as hazardous waste. Some products used for
cleaning homes such as laundry detergents also contain pesticides.
In terms of people's health, many of these chemicals have shown to be readily absorbed through the skin or
are harmful when inhaled. Other chemicals continue to build up on surfaces in the home. In reality, the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the indoor air of an average home contains 70 times more air
pollutants than outdoor air. This is largely because of the usage of traditional cleaning products for cleaning
homes. In addition to this, these products have been associated with health consequences such as cancer.
The chemicals and toxins found in traditional cleaning products used for cleaning homes also pose a threat
to the environment as they contaminate the soil as well as water systems. In actual fact, they may be bio-
concentrate in the environment and become systemic. Some of these chemicals are stored in the fat tissue
of fish and wildlife. They are also assumed to be endocrine disruptors, which means that they can disturb the
reproduction cycle of aquatic life.
Even though non-organic cleaning products are very common in many households, they contain many
potentially harmful and dangerous substances that can be unsafe to your health. The non-organic products
often used to clean homes can prove to be harmful if inhaled or if they come into contact with skin, possibly
causing redness, irritation, itching as well as swelling. Making use of organic products for cleaning homes can
eliminate the need for protective rubber gloves and masks when cleaning your home. For households with pets
and small children, organic housekeeping and cleaning makes it unlikely that these smaller house members
will fall sick due to accidental exposure to harmful toxins.
