2. BioRegional's vision is of
thriving regional economies
where we meet more of our
needs from local, renewable
and waste resources, enabling
people to enjoy a high quality
of life within their fair share
of the earth's resources, and
leaving space for wildlife and
wilderness. We call this one
planet living.

3. Our strategy
Sue Riddlestone, Director
BioRegional’s unique role is to work
with partners to create real-life
demonstrations that show what a
sustainable or “one planet living” future
looks like. We communicate the stories
and results of these projects to help
change policy and practice.
BioRegional’s real-life projects show how we can produce what we
need and live high-quality lives while consuming a fair share of the
world’s resources. We aim to show that sustainability can be easy,
attractive and cost-effective.
This Strategic Plan covers the two year period from 2010 to 2012.
It sets out our strategic objectives, which are focussed on creating
a set of working examples and the stories around them. We will
communicate these during 2012 when the Rio2012 Earth Summit takes
place in Brazil, and the ‘One Planet Olympics’ takes place in London.

4. If everyone in the world consumed as many
natural resources as the average person in the
UK we'd need three planets to support us. If we
all lived the average American lifestyle, we'd
need five planets to support us.
The One Planet Living framework helps
people and organisations to examine the
sustainability challenges that they face, and to
develop solutions to help them live and work
within a fair share of our planet's resources.

2 Zero waste 7 Land use and wildlife
3 Sustainable transport 8 Culture and heritage

5. Our strategic objectives are organised into five themes:
One Planet Communities
working in partnership with developers to build new sustainable communities in North America,
China, UK, South Africa.
One Planet Regions
working in partnership with local authorities to help local people, businesses and council
services across a local authority region to achieve one planet living
One Planet Companies
working in partnership with organisations that are aiming to achieve one planet living in their
own operations, and that are helping their customers to achieve one planet living
Bioregional production systems
demonstrating bioregional production systems and whole supply chains in three priority
footprint areas: food, energy and construction
Policy and communication
communicating BioRegional’s work to help achieve BioRegional’s vision and objectives by
influencing policy and practice, and increasing our profile with key audiences

9. One Planet Regions
We will work in partnership with the London Borough of Sutton
to retrofit the one planet living approach into the local authority’s
operations and to the existing local authority region, with a pilot area
in Hackbridge to have achieved average 20% reductions in carbon
and eco-footprint by March 2012.
In the Hackbridge area BioRegional will prioritise measures relating to energy-saving retrofit
and energy generation, the physical environment, the local economy and community
engagement. The target is that leading residents are enabled to reduce their carbon and eco-
footprint by 50%, with average reductions of 20%.
We will work with Sutton Council to develop a monitoring plan and offer support on three
focus areas: delivering zero carbon council buildings, sustainable procurement and embedding
behaviour. These are key to delivering the one planet action plan for Sutton Council’s operations.
Beyond our flagship project in Sutton, we aim to work in partnership with five local authorities
by 2012 to retrofit one planet living into a region. Our objectives include :
• setting up an annual conference and best practice sharing network for current and
prospective One Planet Regions
• developing a toolkit for use by local authorities and their partners to mainstream one
planet living on a regional level
• bringing about one national level policy change in this area
• continuing to influence and work on the design and delivery of the UK government eco-
towns and eco-quarter initiatives, informing industry best practice, government policy
and local authority delivery.

13. Bioregional production systems
We aim to develop demonstrations of one planet living approaches
and bioregionalism across supply chains for the provision of goods
and services in the priority footprint areas of food, energy, and
construction by March 2012.
Where possible we will focus this work in Sutton or the wider bioregion to support our One
Planet Regions objective. Specific projects will include:
• the One Planet Food project, creating a sustainable food supply chain in the region
• defining the delivery model and creating a demonstration area of energy efficiency and
energy generation as part of a zero carbon retrofit in the Hackbridge area by March 2012
• promoting a sustainable wood-fuel supply-chain in and around South London
• sustainable lifecycle approaches to construction in the region, including the Re:BUILD
building materials re-use centre project.
Activity will focus on at least one practical demonstration project in each of the three
footprint areas with measurement of results against business as usual. We will also
publish recommendations for industry and policy change based on successful examples or
insurmountable barriers.
In addition we will continue to develop our energy technology and materials knowledge so we
can continue to provide guidance to our key partners and develop new demonstration projects.
