1. 1. SECOND TERM READER
THE STORY OF THE INTERNET
Editorial: Penguin Readers
Level 5, Upper-intermediated
2300 headwords
SUMMARY AND OPINION
I found this book and it seemed very interesting to me and because of that I decided to read it, although nobody in the class had done it.
This book is about Internet development since its creation and also about the final repercussion it has had to our days. Also it tells the fight between different technologic companies to achieve the best results to build the net to connect the most people in the world. But nowadays there are a lot of people that can't get connected to the rest of the world and can't take part in all the possibilities the net offers.
Is always useful to read about a subject that has a real impact for our lives and society. Internet has become very important nowadays inadvertently for us. It has improved a lot our quality of life but also it has disadvantages.
In my opinion it's a communication tool very useful and, for example, it has made that the incomes of the companies had increased.
I think people use the net to search information over other possibilities we had before like TV, radios, newspapers or simply books.
If we think about children it can be a dangerous environment because they are very vulnerable and don't have developed their critic sense to determine if the information is true or not. Also they can keep in touch with people who do not know. I think parents are responsible of take care of their children but it is very difficult due to the easy access everywhere to the net.
I have read that some governments in Arabia Saudi or Cuba, for example, have restricted political and religious contents by Internet to their citizens and so can manipulate their minds. The clear case we have it with Wiki leaks.
I think that at the same time that Internet is used as a media it can become a censored media. Cristina Moraga
