Wifey video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CV4PJS9FPQ
Wifey Costumes : tracksuit, earrings and chains. Props : nice car Locations : a big house with luxury cars/garden/long drive ways, down a river, inside of nice car and various locations telling the story. Camera angles : close up when he is rapping, longer shots in the narrative Editing : cuts between narrative and performance with quick cut shots with tempo of rapping, slower longer shots with narrative to gather narrative. Performance/narrative : It is based a lot on his performance to establish him as a performer and also some narrative to that links with lyrics
Written in the stars video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgFyi74DVjc&ob=av2e
Written in the stars Costumes : leather jacket and jeans, Eric turner in a vest. Props : piano, sunglasses Locations : roof top and a room which is blank and white. Camera angles : long shots on good location performance but some close up on rapping, Rotation shot around him, close shot on Eric turner while on piano. Editing : shots are quite medium tempo due to it being based more on lyrics and narrative rather then performance Performance/ narrative : key performance from Eric turner (co act), narrative links directly with lyrics and is really effective.
comparison Costumes : since tinie tempah has become more recognized and is targeting a wider audience he has lost the rude boy look with tracksuits (wifey) and gone with the casual look of leather jacket and jeans (written in the stars) Locations : in his first video (wifey) it is very amateur with locations including an inside of a car and walking down a river rather now being an established artist in written in the stars he is in effective locations like roof top and co act in a blank white room. Camera angles/editing : in wifey tinie tempah is trying to get himself recognized and established so all the camera angles are close ups with his performance, but now being established he has a more professional look on his video and has a couple of rotation shots longer shots on his performance to include more effective with locations.
Links typically with rap videos Close up shots when the act is rapping. The editing is very important with the tempo of the song, the shots have to link. The story that they tell is more key in established artists rather than artists that are trying to build themselves up. Co acts are effective to break up a rapper constantly rapping There clothing and look pays a big part with the genre of the music video and if they don’t link it look weird and just does not have the right look. Locations are what make the video look good or bad
Goodwin’s theory Does the video stick to generic conventions or does it play with them in any way? Both videos stick to the conventional rap video of a lot of performance of the artist rapping and the lyrics telling a story. Also the costumes in ‘Wifey’ really fit in with the conventions of a rap video. In ‘written in the stars’ it challenges most conventions with co act. Eric Turner always being in the same location. What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting)? Does it vary at different points in the video? The relationship between lyrics and visuals differ between both videos due to there being a stronger meaning/storyline in ‘written in the stars’ so the is more of a lyric visual link. What is the relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting)? Does it vary at different points in the video? The relationship between music and visuals are key in rap videos and in both videos here is very obvious in the fact the rap tempo is fast so are the shots and in ‘written in the stars’ the chorus the tempo slows down and the shots do as well.
The demands of the record label will often include the needs for lots of close ups of the artists and/or the artist may develop mofits which recur across their work (a visual style)In both videos it is very obvious that the record label has a say in what is in the video, it is mainly in ‘Wifey’ as then Tinie Tempah was not an established artist and that was what they were trying to develop. In ‘written in the stars’ the development of the artist was not needed due to him being a star before the video. There is frequently reference to the notion of looking ( eyes, gazes to camera, to the viewer, to other characters, to self-images such as reflections, screens within screens, telescopes, etc.) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. This theory is seen many of times in the first video ‘Wifey’ due to there being many close up shots of Tinie Tempah, and he looks into the camera which helps him develop his self-image for the audience to see. When there is shots of the story it is like there is no camera and it is very direct on the story not artist. There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc.)In these videos there is not obvious intertextual reference to film or TV programmes but there is a clear reference between most other rap videos as it hits most typical codes and conventions, the other reference is to themselves as it is clear that they have a link in both idea and performance.
