Y he de decir

9. A unique and special Company
Strength in diversity and cohesion
Although the Amgen management team is relatively new, it is
getting remarkable results. Its strength is in its diversity and its
cohesion: there are new members and those who have been part
of Amgen for many years; those who have experience of several
sectors and specialists in pharmacy/ biotechnology; those who
have worked in different areas of the company and those who
have stayed in the same department; local and international, with
very different perspectives, training and experience. However,
they are all highly committed to the Amgen project, with long
term vision, orientation towards results, people and innovation,
and all with a very high level of professionalism, transparency,
approachability and capacity to adapt to any circumstances. “In
our work meetings”, Jordi Martí, the Director General comments,
“you can see great orientation to action and multiple points of
view, different perspectives and discrepancies. All of this enriches
the debate and innovative solutions emerge to which we can all
commit. Outside of the management committee, there is only

Biotechnology is a relatively new sector, with few companies the size of Amgen. This highly regulated market, with restricted
prices and ever increasing research costs, is a challenge for the future of the company. The company’s strategy at local level
has been to find partners in the communities where it is active. Together, they carry out projects which contribute to the
maintenance and improvement of the health system. The company started work in Spain together with a company with a
longer history who helped them to launch their product. Later, they broke up that partnership and began to operate in new
therapeutic areas. That was the start of the period of growth for the biotech company.

The Director General of Amgen believes that the sector has
suffered, to a certain extent, from being too inward looking
and, although it dedicates a lot of resources to product
innovation, it has not yet been able to translate this high level
of dedication to other areas of the business. “We all have an
innovative part, but it is not easy to make it come out”, Martí
says. Innovation, - “which, let us not forget, always brings
with it risk” – can be extended to many other areas, such
as the management of people and processes, commercial
programmes, building strategic alliances, etc. The Director
General believes that companies should reward their
employees for their “excellent mistakes”, those which come
out of an innovative idea: “it is the best way to demonstrate
our firm resolution to innovate and take the controlled risk”,
he adds.
