Once a king called upon all of his wise men and asked them,
“Is there any mantra or any suggestion which works in every
situation, in every circumstance, in every place and in every time,
in every joy, every sorrow, every defeat and every victory?”
有一次，一位国王召集了他所有的智者并问他们, “是否有任何咒语或
建议适用于任何情况？在每一个环境、每一个地方、每一个时间、每
一个快乐中， 每一次悲伤每一次失败和每一次胜利？”

The king continued, “I need one answer , something
which can help me when none of you is available to
advise me.
Tell me, is there any mantra for me?”
All the wise men were puzzled by the king's question.
They thought and thought.
国王继续说：“我需要一个答案，当你们没有人可以给我建议
时，它可以帮助我。告诉我，我有什么咒语吗？”所有的智者
都对国王的问题感到困惑。他们想了又想。

After a lengthy discussion, an old wise man suggested
something which impressed all of the other wise men.
They went to the king and gave him a small piece of paper
folded up .
There was something written on it.
There was a condition told to the king:

给了他一张折叠起来的小纸片。

The king must not open the paper to see the message out of curiosity.
The wise man explained, “It is only in extreme danger when you the
king find yourself alone and there seems to be no way out …only then
can you see the message.”
The king nodded in agreement and put the small paper into a
compartment under his diamond ring.
国王不得出于好奇而打开报纸看消息。智者解释道：“只有当你本王发现自
己孤身一人，似乎无路可逃时，才处于极度危险之中……只有这样，你才能
看到消息。”国王点头同意，将小纸片放入钻戒下方的隔间中。

Some time later, another nearby king attacked this king’s
kingdom.
The king and his army fought bravely but lost the battle.
The king had to flee on his horse. The enemies started to
follow him, and they were getting closer and closer to the king.
一段时间后，附近的另一位国王袭击了本王的王国。国王和他的军
队英勇作战，但输了。国王不得不骑马逃跑。 敌人开始跟随他，
他们离国王越来越近。

Suddenly the king found himself at the end of a road up on a
cliff.
The road was a dead end… it did not continue on. Underneath
the road on one side was a ravine … a rocky valley 1000 feet
deep. If he were to jump down with his horse into the ravine,
he and his horse would be finished.
突然，国王发现自己站在悬崖上一条路的尽头。这条路是死胡
同……它没有继续前行。 一侧的道路下面是一条沟壑……一个
1000 英尺深的岩石山谷。 如果他带着他的马跳下峡谷，他和他的
马就完了。

The king could not proceed on for the road had ended. He
could not turn back as the sound of the enemies’ horses
seemed to be getting louder … the enemies were
approaching fast.
The king was filled with great fear; there seemed to be no
way to escape. What should he do?
国王无法继续前进，因为道路已经结束。 他无法回头，敌人的马
蹄声似乎越来越大……敌人正在快速逼近。国王非常害怕； 似乎
没有办法逃脱。 他应该怎么做？

Then suddenly he saw the diamond in his ring shining in the sun and he
remembered the message hidden in the ring.
He opened the diamond ring and read the message on the small paper.
The message was :
“THIS TOO SHALL PASS”
The king read it again and again. Suddenly something struck his mind.
“Yes, this too shall pass,” he said to himself.
突然，他看到戒指中的钻石在阳光下闪闪发光，他想起了戒指中隐藏的
信息。他打开钻戒，看了看小纸上的信息。消息是：“这也将过去”国
王读了一遍又一遍。 突然，有什么东西打在了他的脑海里。“是的，这
也会过去的，”他对自己说。

“Only a few days ago, I was enjoying myself in my kingdom.
I was the mightiest of all the kings, yet today the kingdom and
all my pleasures have gone.
I am here now trying to escape from enemies.
Like those days of luxurious life have gone, this day of
danger too will pass.”
“就在几天前，我还在我的王国里玩得很开心。我是所有国王中最
强大的，但今天王国和我所有的快乐都消失了。我现在在这里试图
逃离敌人。就像那些奢侈的日子已经过去，危险的日子也会过去。”

11. 11
A calmness filled his mind. He got down from his horse and
looked around. The place was full of natural beauty; he had
never known that such a beautiful place was also a part of
his kingdom.
The revelation of the message had a great effect on him.
He relaxed and forgot about those enemies following him.
一股平静充满了他的心。 他从马上下来，环顾四周。 这个地方充满了
自然美景； 他从来不知道，如此美丽的地方，也是他王国的一部分。信
息的启示对他产生了很大的影响。他放松下来，忘记了那些追随他的敌
人。

12. 12
After a few minutes he realized that the noise of the horses and
the enemies coming was receding. The enemies had moved into
some other part of the mountain and were nowhere near him.
The king was very brave.
He reorganized his army and fought again with the enemy. He
defeated the enemy and regained his empire. When he returned to
his kingdom after the victory he was received with much fanfare.
几分钟后，他意识到马匹和敌人来袭的声音正在消退。 敌人已经进入了山的其
他地方，离他不远了。国王非常勇敢。他重组了他的军队，再次与敌人作战。
他打败了敌人，重新夺回了他的帝国。 当他在胜利后回到他的王国时，他受到

The whole capital was rejoicing in the victory.
Everyone was in a festive mood.
Flowers were being showered on the king from everywhere.
From every corner people were dancing and singing.
For a moment king said to himself , “I am one of the bravest and
greatest kings - it is not easy to defeat me.” With all the reception
and celebrations, the king saw an Ego emerging in him.
全京城都在为胜利而欢欣鼓舞大家都洋溢着节日的气氛。鲜花从四面八
方洒向国王。从每个角落，人们都在跳舞和唱歌。有那么一刻，国王自
言自语道：“我是最勇敢、最伟大的国王之一——要打败我并不容易。”
随着所有的招待会和庆祝活动，国王看到一个自我出现在他身上。

14. 14
Suddenly the diamond of his ring flashed in the sunlight and reminded him of the
message “THIS TOO SHALL PASS”. He became silent. His mind went through a total
change - from the egoist he moved to a state of utter humbleness.
He reflected:
“Everything passes by, we are just watchers and witnesses of all this; we are the
perceivers; life comes and goes; happiness and sorrow comes and goes.
All these moments will pass away. Therefore I should not get attached to all this.”
The king had realized important Dhamma teachings. He became a very kind,
compassionate and wise king. He ruled his kingdom happily and peacefully for the rest
of his life.
突然，他戒指上的钻石在阳光下闪烁，让他想起了“这也将过去”的信息。 他变得沉默
了。 他的思想经历了彻底的改变——从利己主义者转变为完全谦虚的状态。他反映：
“一切都过去了，我们只是这一切的旁观者和见证者； 我们是感知者； 生命来来去去；
快乐和悲伤来来去去。所有这些时刻都会过去。 所以我不应该执着于这一切。” 国王

2 I am subject to ill health
3 I am subject to death
4 I will be separated from
everything that is dear to me

Whatever I do, for good or for
evil, to that will I fall heir.

Blame; Honor and Dishonor.
They come & go. Be patient
