Sebuah Hikayat Jataka dengan Akhlak

2. Once upon a time there lived a ferocious wolf in a dense
forest.
He was very dangerous and killed everybody he met.
There was a small village close to the forest. The villagers
were scared of the wolf as he troubled everyone.
A wise pundit (a learned person) lived in the village. He was a
proud man as he thought that there was none to match his
intelligence.
Pada suatu masa dahulu hiduplah seekor serigala yang
ganas di dalam hutan yang lebat. Dia sangat berbahaya dan
membunuh semua orang yang dia temui. Terdapat sebuah
kampung kecil berhampiran dengan hutan. Penduduk
kampung takut dengan serigala itu kerana dia menyusahkan
semua orang. Seorang pundit (orang terpelajar) tinggal di
kampung. Dia seorang yang bangga kerana dia menyangka
bahawa tidak ada yang menandingi kecerdasannya.

3. The villagers thought of seeking the help of the pundit to drive the wolf and
So, they approached the pundit. They discussed matters among themselves.
“Our pundit is a highly learned man. He knows everything. Do you think he can
do something to help us drive the wolf away?” one villager asked.
“Why not? A learned man has the brains to do anything!” another said.
“Can we take a hunter to the forest to kill the wolf?” a third villager asked.
“You fool!” one villager said. “The hunter cannot do anything. he will run to the
side of the woods.”
The villagers thought of seeking the help of the pundit to drive the wolf
away and so, they approached the pundit. They discussed matters among
themselves.
“Our pundit is a highly learned man. He knows everything. Do you think he
can do something to help us drive the wolf away?” one villager asked.
“Why not? A learned man has the brains to do anything!” another said.
“Can we take a hunter to the forest to kill the wolf?” a third villager asked.
“You fool!” one villager said. “The hunter cannot do anything. He will run
to the side of the woods.”
Penduduk kampung berfikir untuk mendapatkan bantuan pundit untuk
menghalau serigala itu dan dengan itu, mereka mendekati pundit itu.
Mereka membincangkan perkara sesama mereka.“Pundit kami adalah
seorang yang berilmu tinggi. Dia tahu segala-galanya. Adakah anda fikir
dia boleh melakukan sesuatu untuk membantu kita menghalau serigala
itu?” tanya seorang penduduk kampung."Kenapa tidak? Lelaki terpelajar
mempunyai otak untuk melakukan apa sahaja!” seorang lagi
berkata."Bolehkah kita membawa seorang pemburu ke hutan untuk
membunuh serigala itu?" tanya orang kampung ketiga. "Awak bodoh!"
kata seorang penduduk kampung. “Pemburu tidak boleh berbuat apa-apa.
Dia akan lari ke tepi hutan.”

When the villagers approached the pundit, he was busy reading
some books.
“Sir, we have come here for some help.”
“What is the matter?”
“Sir, a wild wolf is troubling us every day. We are not able to
work peacefully. Our families are always in fear! Sir, please try to
help us out of this trouble. You are a great learned man. You
should know some ways to drive the wolf away! Please help us
Sir!”
Apabila orang kampung menghampiri pundit, dia sibuk
membaca beberapa buku.
"Tuan, kami datang ke sini untuk mendapatkan bantuan.”
“Apa masalahnya?"
“Tuan, serigala liar mengganggu kami setiap hari. Kami tidak
dapat bekerja dengan aman. Keluarga kami sentiasa dalam
ketakutan! Tuan, tolong cuba bantu kami keluar dari masalah ini.
Anda seorang lelaki terpelajar yang hebat. Anda harus tahu
beberapa cara untuk menghalau serigala pergi! Tolong bantu
kami Tuan!”

5. “Do you think I have no better work to do?” the pundit asked.
“Get away from here. I don't have time for all this nonsense.”
The villagers returned with disappointment. On the way back they met a
hunter from the nearby forest.
“Who are you?” A villager asked. “We have not seen you here before.”
“I come from the nearby forest,” the hunter said.
“All hunters in our village are scared of a huge wolf which lives in the
forest. You look very bold and hefty. Can you get rid of the wolf from this
forest?” one of the villagers pleaded.
"Adakah anda fikir saya tidak mempunyai kerja yang lebih baik untuk
dilakukan?" pundit itu bertanya. “Pergi dari sini. Saya tidak ada masa
untuk semua perkara karut ini.” Orang kampung pulang dengan rasa
kecewa. Dalam perjalanan pulang mereka bertemu dengan seorang
pemburu dari hutan berhampiran. “Siapa awak?” Seorang penduduk
kampung bertanya. "Kami tidak melihat anda di sini sebelum
ini.""Saya datang dari hutan berhampiran," kata pemburu itu.
“Semua pemburu di kampung kami takut dengan serigala besar yang
tinggal di dalam hutan. Anda kelihatan sangat berani dan gagah.
Bolehkah anda menyingkirkan serigala dari hutan ini?” merayu salah
seorang penduduk kampung.

6. “Alright,” the hunter replied. “I will take it up as a challenge and do it.”
In a few days the hunter caught the wolf. He locked it in a cage for
everyone to see. The villagers were extremely happy; the pundit also came
to see the wolf. When the pundit was close to the cage the wolf started to
talk.
“Sir, can you let me out free?”
“Ah, am I a fool to let you out free?”
“Sir, these villagers are fools. You are the wisest and kindest person here.
If you let me out free, I will run to another forest.
I swear that I will not harm you.”
"Baiklah," jawab pemburu itu. "Saya akan menerimanya sebagai cabaran
dan melakukannya."Dalam beberapa hari pemburu menangkap serigala.
Dia menguncinya dalam sangkar untuk dilihat oleh semua orang.
Penduduk kampung sangat gembira; pundit itu juga datang untuk
melihat serigala. Apabila pundit itu hampir dengan sangkar, serigala mula
bercakap,"Tuan, bolehkah anda membebaskan saya?”
“Ah, bodoh ke saya lepaskan awak?”
“Tuan, orang kampung ini bodoh. Anda adalah orang yang paling bijak
dan paling baik di sini. Kalau awak lepaskan saya, saya akan lari ke hutan
lain. Saya bersumpah bahawa saya tidak akan membahayakan awak.” 6

7. The pundit thought for a while and then he said, “Alright but
remember your promise.”
The pundit then opened the cage. The wolf sprang on the pundit to
kill him.
The pundit ran in all possible directions to save his life.
Suddenly he met a jackal. He went and hid behind the jackal.
“What happened great pundit? Why are you running like this?”
“The big wolf who was caught by the hunter asked me to set him
free promising that he would not harm me but now he is coming to
kill me!”
Pundit itu berfikir sejenak dan kemudian dia berkata, "Baiklah tetapi
ingat janji kamu.” Pundit itu kemudian membuka sangkar. Serigala itu
melompat ke arah pundit untuk membunuhnya. Pundit itu berlari ke
semua arah yang mungkin untuk menyelamatkan nyawanya. Tiba-tiba dia
bertemu dengan seekor jackal. Dia pergi dan bersembunyi di belakang
jackal itu.“Apa yang berlaku pandit hebat? Kenapa awak lari macam ni?”
"Serigala besar yang ditangkap oleh pemburu meminta saya
membebaskannya dengan berjanji bahawa dia tidak akan membahayakan
saya tetapi sekarang dia datang untuk membunuh saya!" 7

8. The jackal was calm.
The wolf shouted at the jackal. “Move aside. If I pounce on you, I
will tear you to pieces.”
The jackal told the wolf, “Brother you're too huge. This pundit was
telling me that he saved you from the cage. I couldn't believe my
ears. That's what I was questioning him. He claims that he can
prove it to me but I knew it is impossible. You are the emperor of
this forest and how could this pundit save you? I asked him to
prove this.”
Jackal itu tenang. Serigala itu menjerit kepada Jackal, "Ke tepi.
Jika saya menerkam awak, saya akan mengoyakkan awak.”
Jackal itu memberitahu serigala itu, “Abang kamu terlalu besar.
Pundit ini memberitahu saya bahawa dia menyelamatkan kamu
dari sangkar. Saya tidak percaya telinga saya. Itulah yang saya
menyoalnya. Dia mendakwa bahawa dia boleh membuktikannya
kepada saya tetapi saya tahu ia adalah mustahil. Anda adalah
maharaja hutan ini dan bagaimana pundit ini boleh
menyelamatkan anda? Saya minta dia buktikan perkara ini.”

9. The jackal asked the pundit and wolf to go with him to the cage
where the wolf could prove the pundit was lying. The arrogant,
foolish wolf went along.
When they reached the cage, the pundit declared,
“I saved the wolf from this cage.”
“He's lying. I was caught in the cage but using my sharp claws, I
opened the cage and came out. No one can imprison me,” the
proud wolf said.
“Pundit, now tell me how you opened the cage,” the jackal said.
Jackal meminta si pundit dan serigala untuk pergi bersamanya ke
sangkar di mana serigala itu boleh membuktikan si pundit itu berbohong.
Serigala yang sombong dan bodoh pergi bersama. Apabila mereka sampai
ke sangkar, pundit itu menyatakan, "Saya menyelamatkan serigala dari
sangkar ini."
"Dia menipu. Saya terperangkap dalam sangkar tetapi menggunakan
kuku tajam saya, saya membuka sangkar dan keluar. Tiada siapa yang
boleh memenjarakan saya,” kata serigala yang bangga itu.“
“Pundit, sekarang beritahu saya bagaimana anda membuka sangkar itu,"
kata Jackal itu.

10. The pundit showed how he opened the lock.
Then the jackal said to the wolf, “Brother can you tell me
how you came out from the cage. I want to punish this
pundit for lying.”
The wolf feeling very superior, foolishly went inside the
cage.
The next moment, the pundit closed the door of the cage
and the wolf was permanently locked inside the cage.
Pundit itu menunjukkan bagaimana dia membuka kunci.
Kemudian jackal itu berkata kepada serigala itu, “Abang
boleh beritahu saya bagaimana kamu keluar dari sangkar.
Saya mahu menghukum pundit ini kerana berbohong.”
Serigala berasa sangat hebat, dengan bodohnya masuk ke
dalam sangkar. Detik berikutnya, pundit itu menutup pintu
sangkar dan serigala itu dikunci secara kekal di dalam
sangkar.

11. “You cheat!” the pundit scolded the wolf.
The jackal said to the wolf, “Great emperor of the forest!
Please use your brains and come out.” Of course, the wolf
could not.
The pundit was very happy and thanked the jackal.
In the meantime, all the villagers arrived at the place.
They praised the jackal.
The jackal told the pundit, “Great sir, you are a highly
learned man but your book knowledge alone is not sufficient.
"Kau tipu!" pundit itu memarahi serigala. Jackal itu berkata
kepada serigala, “Maharaja besar hutan! Sila gunakan otak anda
dan keluar.” Sudah tentu, serigala tidak boleh.
Pundit itu sangat gembira dan berterima kasih kepada Jackal itu.
Dalam pada itu, semua penduduk kampung tiba di tempat itu.
Mereka memuji Jackal itu. Si Jackal memberitahu pundit, “Tuan
yang hebat, anda seorang yang berilmu tinggi tetapi pengetahuan
buku anda sahaja tidak mencukupi.

12. You should try to use it practically and help everyone. When the hunter
with so much difficulty had caught the wolf, how could you so foolishly
open the cage to let the wolf out?”
The pundit felt ashamed. In front of all the villagers he said, “My dear
friends, I am so sorry for what I have done.”
The villagers were very happy that the jackal had taught the pundit a
good lesson. They gave the jackal a basket of sweet grapes for his help.
The jackal ran into the forest happily.
Anda harus cuba menggunakannya secara praktikal dan
membantu semua orang. Apabila pemburu dengan susah payah
telah menangkap serigala itu, bagaimana kamu boleh membuka
sangkar dengan begitu bodoh untuk membiarkan serigala itu
keluar?” Pakar itu berasa malu. Di hadapan semua penduduk
kampung dia berkata, "Sahabat yang dikasihi, saya sangat
menyesal atas apa yang telah saya lakukan."Penduduk kampung
sangat gembira kerana serigala itu telah memberi pengajaran
yang baik kepada pundit itu. Mereka memberi serigala sebakul
anggur manis kerana membantu penduduk kampung itu.
Si jackal berlari ke dalam hutan dengan gembira.

13. Pengajaran Moral untuk Dipelajari
Mere book
knowledge
without
practice
does not
bring about
Wisdom and
Compassion.
Ilmu buku
semata-mata
tanpa
amalan tidak
mendatang-
kan Hikmah
dan Belas
Kasihan.
Pride and heedlessness can easily lead one to act foolishly.
This in turn will bring pain and suffering.
Kesombongan dan kelalaian boleh menyebabkan seseorang
bertindak bodoh dengan mudah. Ini seterusnya akan membawa
kesakitan dan penderitaan.
Lying, dishonesty and cheating are unwholesome actions.
Such actions lead to painful consequences.
Berbohong, tidak jujur dan menipu adalah tindakan yang tidak
baik. Tindakan sedemikian membawa kepada
akibat yang menyakitkan.
Intelligence, Wisdom, Fast & Clear
Thinking will help one to solve problems.
Kecerdasan, Kebijaksanaan, Pemikiran
Cepat & Jelas akan membantu seseorang
menyelesaikan masalah.
