First conditional lesson plan for secondary level students

  1. 1. Lesson Plan Main Objective: To identify structures of the first conditional in English. To recognize and use key vocabulary, clauses, structures and information in short, simple texts related to the Lesson Topic (Election Day). Subsidiary aims: Students will demonstrate knowledge of the “First conditional” Form of English and demonstrate knowledge of its structure and variations by writing a short proposal, making promises, offers, deals and warnings in the context of “Election day”. Key Activities: Fill in the gaps, Writing a Proposal Text Contents Skills/procedures: Writing Lexis Grammar First Conditional Form (Future with “Will”) Function Making deals, promises, warnings, and offers Expressing Future Intentions Assumptions: Stages Interaction Materials-Timing (Warm up) Presentation (T-S) The teacher greets the class, and asks the students the plans they have for today, tonight, this weekend, etc. The teacher can also talk about his own plans, as to set the mood for the lesson and the topic. (T-S) The teacher presents the topic of the lesson (First Conditional) through a “PowerPoint” presentation, and handing out a factsheet, as a complementary aid for the class. He describes the situations in which the grammatical structure can be used. He exemplifies and contextualizes a set of sentences, and states the rules to form said sentences. He also explains some variations (“If clause” written before the “main clause” and vice versa). Board, Marker. 5 minutes Image Projector, “PowerPoint” Presentation, Complementary Factsheet, Board, Marker. 20 minutes Practice (S-T) Through the same PowerPoint presentation, the teacher conducts a controlled practice activity. By asking for volunteers, or naming someone randomly, a student will have to complete the missing information on both clauses of a “First Conditional” sentence. The student read the sentence aloud, applying the grammatical rules covered in the lesson, the teacher shows the answer on the presentation, explains the answer, and then, he requests another student to read the next sentence. Image projector, “PowerPoint” presentation, Board, Marker 10 minutes Production (S-S) - The teacher presents the writing activity. In groups of three, students will have to create a short text, using the content covered during the lesson. In the context of “Election Day”, each group will have to write a proposal text, in which they make deals and/or threats, offers, and promises to people, as if they were running against another political party in the classroom. Using the First conditional sentence, students will have to state sentences such as “If you vote for us, we will...”, to convince people to vote for them. 4 groups will randomly be selected to present their texts in front of the class, and every group must hand in their respective proposals by the end of the lesson. Image projector, “PowerPoint” presentation Activity Worksheet. 5 min (instruction giving) 25 minutes (production)
  2. 2. (Wrap-up) (S-S) - The groups present their proposals to the rest of their classmates. As a whole class, students decide on what is the best “political party”. The teacher reinforces the content covered in the lesson by asking students what the aim of the class was; He elicits information from the students about the topic seen in the lesson. Students answer the teacher’s questions. 20 minutes 5 minutes
